I think of flattering flares as being fitted (bodycon, if you will) until the knee, and then flaring out. Otherwise, all you have is a pair of wide-legged pants. Wide-legged pants are not flares, IMO.

It took 3 years for the boyfriend jean to catch on here now it is everywhere. I give flares 3 or 4 years and they will be everywhere here, also. Ha, Talbot's just got on the slim leg bandwagon. Talk about late.

Am I wrong thinking that flares can be pretty bodycon as well if they are really fitted to the knee? At least this is how I felt in mine before I lost weight. I think that the hips and thighs is the places where bodycon really matters and not so much below the knee. If anything flares can be more flattering than skinnies while being equally sexy looking.
Now if only they were as practical in wet weather...
And abc- I so hear you about skinnies in Mexico City! I was amazed by what is considered an appropriate business attire in the bank there - tights skinnies and tight shorter tops worn together all over the place. I felt that the evening out would be more appropriate for them than the bank but obviously I was the only one thinking that!

When I look around I see many skinny jeans, some flare/bootcut and almost no boyfriend styles on São Paulo's streets. Skinny's dominated the stores for some years now, but I've seen a lot of flare jeans/trousers on sale this days. I don't know if they are staying or not, but I'm stocking just in case :D

They seem to be airborne here in Melbourne, Australia but they are not flying too high yet. Who knows how popular they'll become....it may take a year or two....they may stay on the fringe. Right now, I'm liking wearing something not seen too often. In saying that, I wear all the cuts of jean....boyfriend, cigarette leg, skinny, straight, bootcut and more recently flares again.....they all appeal in their own way and I love the variety.

I just remembered that the last time I wore my Love Story jeans (on one of our blissfully slush- and snow-free winter days, with cowboy boots), I got a couple of compliments on them, and one woman actually asked where I got them. I think there could be a market, since I think a lot of women are tired of the long reign of skinnies. And I just bought those bootcut Lucky Brand jeans before I left for Texas. It looks like I may be a one-woman campaign for bringing flares back!

I honestly don't think so.Skinnies and straight leg jeans are so much more easy to deal with, you can wear any top, any shoe .
Also, I think that the 90's, 2000' s there were too many bootcuts/flares and we haven't had time to miss them yet.
Dress pants are a totally different thing.

I went shopping at the Nordstroms in Jacksonville, Florida a few times in the last month (I will really miss that place when I head home sigh) and there were lots of BF jeans, tapered cropped jeans, skinnies but no flares. In Florida people dress extremely casually. Flat shoes reign. Lots of people over 60.

Well, we'll see. I'd be happy to see them catch on, if only to provide some variety, but so far there's no evidence that it's happening. I wore flares a lot in the early to mid 2000s, and I like the balancing effect they have. (Mind you, I live in California back then, which was in a constant state of drought).

At least I have a few pairs of shoes that will go with flares now. When you're little, you really need a bit of a platform or a chunky heel to wear wide hems!

Haven't seen them much in Australia (though it has been too hot for jeans until recently anyway). I don't think BF are big here either.
One of the disadvantage of having short legs is that most of a flare (even more so in bootcuts) gets cut off when hemmed so I am rather indifferent to this trend.

Huh. Well, I will wear them. I'm not exactly Queen Trend, but I like how I look in them and they lend themselves well to rock styling, so I'm going with it. I'm kinda tired of skinnies and I've never fully embraced boyfriend jeans.

So I hope they do catch on at least a bit. Can't say I get any weird looks when I wear mine. Style around here is eclectic enough that I don't mind looking a bit different that the norm.

It has been summer here, and whilst denim is still popular, much less so than in winter. I still see a lot of skinny or straight jeans, but a few pairs of flares have sneaked through.

At the moment the main bottoms trend is soft patterned pants or soft patterned shorts, loose, holiday mode-ish. I bought a new pair this week and have worn them twice already. They won't work for the middle of winter but perfect for most autumn days, and then as loungewear, and then maybe in spring again.

I saw them in Austin a few years back and still see some there. Mostly on the older "hippie" music people and some of the younger crowd. But there's not exactly a fashion forward population in Austin for the most part so that's probably not a great indicator.

I've never really felt great in flares - they seem too impractical and I'm much more of a practical person. I don't wear ripped out knees either but will go for a small amount of distressing if that's required to get a modern jean fit without so much indigo dye that everyone's furniture turns blue.

I agree with rachy in that it's likely to be a fashion editor trend . That said, I am ABSOLULETLY going to buy some soon if I can find a pair that is not at a fashion editor price. For a trend - there is no way I'm spending any serious $ on them - but I think they are super cute and flattering. Here in Canada's version of the midwest, it's still skinnies everywhere, and even true fashion boyfriend jeans are not that common. We are quite staid here . Snooz.

Interesting question; I've found myself wondering the same thing. I've seen a few fashion forward 20somethings wearing them in my area - light wash with boho tops - but they're definitely not mainstream yet. I agree that the less dramatic flare, shading into bootcut, never really went out in a lot of places and can still be bought in its earlier form - just check the
Maurice's website if you doubt me.

Interesting! I am seeing a sprinkling of flares and boot cuts in our shops currently, but skinnies are still the dominant shape. I haven't seen boot cuts on many actual people. I think the weather point is a good one - we are still getting some heavy rains, and whilst it is now getting cool enough for trousers and jeans, the soggy hem issue has definitely dampened my enthusiasm for the trend.

I'm mostly seeing skinnys or a few straight legs. Even a boot cut would look strange. Flares? I doubt it for this time around. One thing that affects trends here is timing. It will soon be too hot for jeans. Any trends will be on hold for months and by then interest may be lost. What I am seeing on college girls in Boulder is tight short shorts, even on rather cold days.

I'm not sure about it either. I've seen more flares in stores again, but not as many on real people. When I wore my old flares last fall together with my peacoat and gear backpack (I need that one for work) I had two hipster teenies talking about me behind my back, standing at the bus stop. How I was sure to have just come to Berlin from the end of nowhere etc.... It was rather hilarious.

I don't think so, to be honest. Feels like a fashion editor fad to me. It's interesting - they used to say it took something like 7 years for something to filter from the runway to the boonies. But I don't think things work like that anymore. If we don't see them in Walmart by next year, but we see them in 7 years, I'd say that would be a whole new trend.

But back to the topic. Hipsterville is situated in Hippie County. Were you to wear flares here, you'd kind of look like someone's demented grandma - the one who took one tab too many and breaks out into the noodle listening to the music in her own head. Or grandpa, as the case may be.

I am in Mexico City, where bodycon and skinny jeans rule. I've seen skinnier jeans on guys than I feel comfortable wearing! LOL There is an urban edge to dressing here though it hasn't really influenced my personal style. I pretty much do my own thing. I like flares and had some in the past, but they aren't really pracitcal for the life I live now - I do a lot of walking and my feet have become much fussier as I've aged so heels are rare for me nowadays. If/when I see my first pair of flares on the street I will let you know!!

I feel like I see flares (or boot cuts) or more swooshy ankled trousers or jeans in general on three groups:

-a few people wearing them as fashion forward office wear (not in casual formulations)

-people wearing bootcut jeans the way they did in the 90's with sneakers, booties or heels

-people wearing them semi- ironically (usually 70's vintage)

But I'm rarely in the trendiest part of the city.

Every other denim trend Angie has talked about has blossomed here, I think. We've seen a loosening up of the skinnies in general, so I'm seeing a lot of boyfriend jeans and slim-fit boyfriend jeans (although there are of course still plenty of skinnies around, because they're so darn useful). The high-waisted thing is going great guns, and destroyed denim is everywhere. But no flares, yet.

abc, where do you live? I'm curious.

I know. Sometimes it is nice to know that I will never be "that girl" bc there are 100 others worse than me on the street (in terms of too tight, etc). My gauge of fit has definitely changed since moving here. But I also have YLF to keep me grounded so I don't skew too much into sausage casing territory
