My mom and I used to do that kinda stuff all the time. We'd go to the mall to browse through the racks, and then go to the fabric or craft store to get what we needed to doctor up a garment to make it fab. It's so much less expensive that way, and you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself. Back when embroidered pants and jackets were all the rage, I hand embroidered many a garment for myself. Took so little time and so little $. Definitely worth it!

As far as places to buy black metal mesh online, check out these couple of spots for some samples and small quantity swatches:

http://www.mcmaster.com - Can buy a sample set but what the price as they sometimes jack up the price for first time users...

http://www.bwire.com/ - A wire mesh warehouse on the East and West Coast. Sell every color and size, also can send samples as needed.

http://www.amazon.com - just search wire mesh.

thanks for all the tips everyone! The description on the jacket says they used "black metal mesh" so that's what i'll be on the look out for. I"m going to ask my FIL too because he knows a lot more....than me. :D

tracina - super smart about looking for chain mesh evening bags! I'll keep an eye out!

Sarah - the new Pirate thing right?! I keep hearing about how awesome it is! I need to take my son for sure sometime soon! He is a HUGE pirate fan. We're even having a pirate bday party this year. :)

Zapotee - wow thanks so much for all the info! I prefer a box cutter too but i didn't even think about faded fringe! Super helpful and thanks for the heads up about the jacket! i *think* i've seen that one at my H&M before too

Oh yes, you can. I used to distress, poke holes and adorn my denim, back when I was a young pup. For the faded fringes, make a mixture of 2 parts bleach, one part water, take a toothbrush and brush the fibers, then launder the item in your heaviest cycle. I preferred a box cutter, rather than scissors to make the holes. I have never used mesh, but I have used lace and tulle similarly..
This truly bring back old memories :)

H&M has a denim jacket for $29.95 that would work wonderfully for this. They are carrying several at the moment. It is the one by LOGG, the tag has an ampersand and the word jacket.

nice idea! And you also could use a scissors to make a masterpiece. Like some tassels or stripes.

You can buy windowscreen at the hardware store (or Home Depot) - is that what it is? I've got a hole roll in my basement - next time you're at the Zoo, stop by (have you been to the new Como Pool? TDF).

Cool! You could totally do that! I'm hiding my dryer's lint screen from you, though! Also an auto parts or a pool store if you don't have any luck at a hardware store or lumberyard. Take a picture with you (on your phone?) to show them; it's worth a thousand words.

You can find chain mail fabric but it is spendy. You should scout chain mail evening bags at thrift stores.

I sure you know all about distressing denim but thought I would share anyway that when I have done it I found a dremel worked really well.

Totally, yes. Does it have chains? I can't tell. If yes, you could get those in the jewelry making section at Michaels or Joann.

That looks like a very easy DIY. Another place to look for mesh is sporting goods stores or the sporting good section of places like walmart, target etc.. I've seen big inexpensive mesh bags for carrying balls and other sporting equipment.

I agree that you might have better luck at a hardware store. I get a monthly publication from Lowe's that always has creative ideas for using items from their store. This sounds like something that's do-able.

Where my expert seamstresses at?

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/gr.....et/3164614

I stared longingly at this jacket when it was for sale but it was like $300 something so it only showed up in my fantasy closet.

Could i just distress a denim jacket and then sew in some mesh panels? Do craft stores sell mesh panels? I've done a bit of googling but i'm not really getting many answers so i thought i'd try here!
