I'm always eager to buy items for my dominant season, but do prefer to be able to wear stuff asap. I do not wait for sales, though. I purchase immediately once the decision has been made.

I live in a four season climate and the seasons change pretty fast, so I try to stick to only the current season. Whenever I've tried to purchase out of season, by the time the season comes along, I want something new. It doesn't matter that I haven't worn the item yet, I've been staring at it for months already anyway!

I think I do a combo of the two ideas. If I happen to run across a good sale on basics I will stock up. Or I will grab something at an end of season sale for a wardrobe hole in anticipation of the next year. But I am also working on the current season and either filling holes as they appear OR splurging on something outside my usual pattern.

I used to wait for things to go on sale..but that has left me without appropriate clothing for the season (still working on re-vamping/replacing a whole wardrobe). What's been happening the past couple of years is that the weather changes, and I'm scrambling for clothes - and I end up buying in a bit of a panic, making mistakes in the process.

New approach: If I see something foundational/basic on sale for winter (right now I mean), I'm going to buy it, but I am not going to buy end-of-season sale stuff in the hopes that I'll like it, that it'll fit etc. *next* winter. Further, I'm starting my spring/summer shopping as early as possible. In addition, I will likely buy more at the NAS next summer, so I am not left floundering when fall/winter rolls around.

I do the same thing as Mo. I buy whenever an item I've been looking for presents itself to me, particularly if it's on sale. I spend more on basics that will last for years, and much less on trendy items that will only be used a season or 2. No corners cut on shoes. I always look for sales no matter what I'm buying, but I don't scrimp on comfortable shoes. My feet are thanking me for it! If my feet hurt, I'm grumpy, so I need good shoes.

Not much, but the little I have done has been mixed. One dress bought for $10 at the end of a summer sale was a great wear the next summer. I snagged a duplicate pair of bootcut jeans for $10 so I could use it to wear with heels.

But a top I bought last winter, though Angie and YLF seem to like it, isn't really doing it for me, and I think I have some of the same reservations Joy expressed.

I'm changing my ways on this. I've almost always shopped sales in the past, which meant usually the item was out of season. After finding more and more that I'm no longer loving some of those items by the time it comes to wear them and have decided it is a waste of money even if on fabulous clearance ...unless it makes me look young, rich and skinny.

I buy whenever the right item presents itself. That has meant sundresses in the dead of winter in Tahoe and a full length wool coat in FL (for only $10 brand new!). To me it's the same as leaving no retail stone unturned.

I'm always on the lookout to fill wardrobe holes, but I tend not to do a lot of shopping August through November because we only have about four months of cold weather here and then it begins to get warm again. So I'm always hunting for summer clothes: pre-season, mid-season, and end-of-season-sales. Heck, I'm buying things that I hope I can wear this summer right now. If you live in a climate that has a dominant season, I really think it's best to primarily buy things that are suitable to wear during that season (I say this from experience). : )

If I see a good basic piece that I know I will need next season, I would definitely buy it. Items like shirts, basic tops, trousers, skirts - the styles don't change that much each season and buying a couple of pieces ahead, especially on sale, makes sense to me.

I try to stick to the current season - this is because 3/4 of my year is colder temperatures; and the only other season is summer - I have enough cute summer dresses (but always want more!) - so I'd rather buy one or two during the season and wear them rather than outdated ones!

I normally stick to the current season for a couple reasons.
#1... while I don't plan on it, one never knows when 10 extra pounds might decide to take up residence on my bod
#2... after seeing Angie's lists of the new trends of the season I'd look at my "old" new stuff and realize I'm hopelessly outdated before the season even begins.

In a very out of character move, I did however just buy this dress from Nordstrom because casual summer dresses are the hardest thing in the world for me to find...

Do you shop for the upcoming season as and when uou find stuff, or do you mainly stickto working on current wardrobe holes?

Just curious how others approach their shopping..
