I am with Lisa on this one. I did for the first time this year, purchase a winter coat in the middle of summer from NAS but usually I shop for the current and upcoming season. Occasionally I will purchase an item at the end of season sale to take advantage of deep discounts even though the season is over, but deep down I hope to be able to wear it a few times before I put it away for the summer/winter.

Nope; no possible way for a shopper on a student budget. :p I try to shop for the "non-sweaty hot summer" season which is 80% of the climate here!

I was looking at the spring collections online and am not liking the colours I see. I don't know if it's because it's winter now or I am off pastels.

But anyways, I live in California. All my clothes are year round, except my puffer jackets, which I've finally learned to buy straight aways so I don't end up with the last jacket in the sale bin. I do also do the christmas sweater thing - i.e. buy a warmer sweater in December. I throw on thermals when it gets really cold.

---
I had to come back and mention that I once went to NYC at Thanksgiving thinking I surely could find a warm winter coat there... and I had no luck... lots of coats, but not warm...

Not only. It's easiest to shop for the upcoming season, because that is what is available in retail shops. But if I find a perfect item for a different season on the clearance rack or at the thrift store, I will pick it up.

ah, makes sense QM. Why waste your allotment on last year's style when you know you will want what is new and fresh? I guess my shopping hasn't been that trend sensitive for me to come up against a new item that already feels so 'last year' lol.

Mo- No, I don't replace my whole wardrobe each season, just the opposite. I'm only allowing myself a couple items of each type per season (with the exception of summer dresses...LOL) so if I buy 2 or 3 summer blouses now, then I won't feel that I am justified to buy any more come springtime when all the new fads..err styles.. hit the stores. Next spring I want the 2012 models.

I have a silly question for those who tire of the out of season item before its season comes: do you like to replace your wardrobe each season? I mean, I have long sleeved tops from 4 seasons ago and I liked them when I bought them and still like them now. I'm wondering why a few months of owning it makes it 'lose its luster' so to speak. I mean, my cognac boots I bought right when my ankle got hurt (Feb.) have still not been worn out of the house, but I absolutely love them and will get just as much joy wearing them this winter despite seeing them for 9 months. Am I missing something lol?

Not necessarily. I shop predominantly for fall because fall clothing can be worn just about year round in Seattle due to our cool/overcast mild climate. Usually I try to keep an eye out for sale items, which usually involves shopping older merchandise (NAS is the big exception!)

98% of the time yes. I had a bad habit of purchasing out of season items, then forgetting I have them or being tired of them by the time I could really wear them. Now I stick to the current season and only purchase an out of season item if I know it fills a replacement need.

Yes ... because I'm not organized enough to shop for a future season. Also because the winter and fall season is so long here in Chicago, it's hard to think about summer and spring when it's so darn cold!!

I shop just slightly ahead of the season and into it - usually going with the stores simply because of when they put out stuff. I do want to buy stuff that I will be able to wear in the near future. I am totally about instant gratification.

I started to shop for autumn/winter in late August for point of reference. I'm a bargain shopper too, so I tend to pick up pieces here and there. I am still shopping for autumn/winter as we speak.

I rarely shop for something that I need or want "right now" - but this may be more of a store thing. It just seems that I can never find what I want in the middle or end of a season. Most stores are so far ahead. But, like the other ladies, I always keep an eye out.

This Winter, I am much more concerned about "now" . My body is changing alot ( due to meds ) so I need stuff that fits now and I couldn't care less about Spring.

I'm with Modgrl. I shopped for a bunch of fall things in July (NAS for example). I ended up returning most of it because it hung in my closet for two full months, unworn. I was really sick of seeing it there, unworn. If something hangs in my closet for a month, tags still on, I usually end up returning it, it's just the way I am.

My spring comes late, and my fall comes late. I don't live in a place with four distinct seasons; I've got a hot, dry & brown season, and a cold, wet & green season.

yes and no... I pretty much shop only for the upcoming or current season yes...

I used to have the motto that I would only shop for things I could wear today (weather wise). But I realized that I would always end up at the mall on our first cold and rainy day of the year and end up buying the most gosh-awful sweaters because they were warm and cozy and those 2 factors were clouding my vision. So, I realized that I really need to shop ahead. This year I kicked off the fall/winter shopping season with the NAS in July, and when the random cold days hit in October, I was prepared. Now, I did end up buying a sleeveless shirt dress in October as well, but it was navy and the weather was still very warm, and it is also a good transition piece as I can easily add a cardigan. But no, I would not buy a sun dress in the middle of October. It's tempting, but by the time I would be able to wear it, I wouldn't think of it as new and I'd want the next season's latest and greatest anyway.

So I guess I don't mind shopping a little ahead, but I don't shop after August for summer and I won't shop after February for winter.

I gave that up long ago - this is my 4th trip from Tahoe to FL (and soon back) so I almost always have another whole climate, let alone season, in the back of my mind. Besides, off season is a great way to score super deals.

EDIT: Our summer is short. If I wait until that random 90F day and THEN shop, I usually end up with something that's not great. I try to have a few items ready for those days ahead of time. I hate thinking when it's hot!
