I WAS guilty of this. I would buy "nice" items and never wear them because I only got dressed to go to work, or the grocery store. But now I realized, that's my life, so I'd better wear what makes me happy! No point to buy the nice things if I don't wear them.

I used to do this with everything, not just clothes. The last time I did it was with a pair of trousers I bought last autumn. I called them "byzantium trousers" - they were burgundy with gold diamonds and a slight sheen. I bought them thinking, "these would be great to wear to the theatre!" Considering I only go to the theatre two or three times a year, I don't know why I bought them. anyway, after two months of not wearing them I took them back and got a credit note.

Oh my gosh, I sure do. Partly because I have a "save it for best" mentality (even though I never go anywhere that "best" is even remotely needed) and partly because I work at home so I always think I'd look silly swanning about in my best clothes. I try to look good--I wear real clothes during the day and change into sweats at night--because I work better and feel better when I'm dressed, but I don't pull out the best very often just to sit around in, and when I do it's a very conscious choice, since clothing sitting in the closet unworn represents money gone to waste.

Thank you SO much for bringing this up. I'm going to try to do better about actually wearing my favorite clothes more often, starting tomorrow! There's absolutely no reason not to!

Not so much. Now I try hard to buy items that can be dressed up or down, and aside from a long silk outfit that's solely for black tie, everything else is wearable in different settings, more or less dressy.

Did I ever! But not anymore, the wisdom of Angie is to wear our clothes. So I wore my silk dress bought for next years Christmas party to a dinner out this weekend with a leather moto to dress it down. It worked and dear BF looooved it!

I am okay with having a few things that are for very dressy that I do "hoard" and not likely to dress down and use at other times. So I have to be careful not to over-accumulate in this capsule.

What I'm doing better at, is not hoarding tops, jackets & pants for work only. I used to really avoid wearing most of these pieces any other time and had "second stringers" or less-loved tops or jackets for other times. I had the fear I'd mess up the work wear and then where would I be? And wore tennis shoes and sweats instead of boots or comfortable leather loafers or oxfords.

Now I realize I'm going to want to replace or update those items more often anyway. And, I don't want to take up space in my closet and dresser with so many separate items. So if I have a nice black sweater, I am feeling more like I will survive short-term if something happened to it. Of course, I can have back-ups to avoid roadblocks, as Angie wrote about, but now I'm only doing that only occasionally, because I'm finding that I may want a slightly different "black sweater" or whatever a year from now.

-So I am now wearing more of my blazers to go on errands, have targeted some nice but comfy work shoes and boots for shopping, and wear some work tops with jeans or work slacks with maybe something with sparkle or more fun style for smart casual, and overlap some with church. I don't have complete overlap, but more than before.

Then I find I need a much smaller very-casual capsule and am happy to wash & repeat- wear those often.

Not much since learning more here in YLF. I used to do it a lot. Two things changed. I started buying for my current life instead of my imaginary life and when I love something that is more of a signature thing for me, I will sometimes buy two of them (esp. if the price is reasonable) so I can wear one until it's worn, then wear the other. I have duplicates of a few favorite tees, a black sweater, jeans of course and a few other items. Now, if I find I'm not wearing sometlhing at least once in a while I try to purge it from the closet unless it is a specai suit or dress where it's a "going out only" capsule thing.

I am now trying to remind myself that I deserve to look every day and that I don't need to have a special occasion to look nice. After all, I plan to be cremated so there won't be an open casket.

Nope, I try to wear out and buy stuff to replace. Even some of my cocktail dresses I've re-purposed them as tops when I tuck them into my skirts.

I did way more before YLF, now the sooner I wear something for the first time the sooner I mentally incorpoate it into my wardrobe. Thistle a week sounds great.

Yes, but I am better than I was. I now only have 4 things in my closet not yet worn. A dress I bought for a wedding attendee capsule, a suit for job interviewing, and the other 2 are a long wool coat I just have not worn yet, and a party dress that I have not had occasion to break out.
I used to 'save' my clothes for no particular reason. Now I find ways to wear my stuff.

I find that you can dress most items down a bit for every day wear (except for perhaps a black tie gown). The fancy blouse or dress can be worn with a cardigan or blazer and jeans, a silk skirt with a fitted tee and flats. I think it's kind of fun to see what kind of combinations I can come up with.

Funny you should ask, I have a pretty bright blue silky top hanging in my closet waiting for an "occasion" to wear it. I've been thinking about it lately, and even though it's a little dressy for work, I need to bring it out and just wear it!

I used to do that, but no longer. I think part of fashion is wearing and enjoying clothes while you have them, and well, sometimes they will not fit or date or get worn out. Then you can find something new to replace it. I used to feel a bit like a hoarder, but now, I am realising there is always something else out there, and a new potential favourite, just have to give things a try and not mourn the loss of the old fave forever
