I size up lounge wear, workout gear (like lisap I don't like super tight workout tops), and shorts. It's hot when I wear shorts so I like them a little roomy - it's cooler and more comfortable in the heat.

It's always funny to me to read reviews that say the reviewer LOVED an item but returned it because their usual size was too small. Not "exchanged it for the next size up" but returned it.

For me it really depends more on the fit of the item. As I've aged, I've learned that what the tag says doesn't matter. Try it on. If I need to go up a size, I go up; if I need to go down a size, I go down and don't assume it is because I am actually that size.

I guess I know what feels right and how I want something to fit, so I don't automatically size up in anything. I try it on and decide from there. If the size I normally wear doesn't fit, I assume it runs big/small and choose a different size. I don't assume I need a larger size in anything without trying.

Shoes, yes: boots, because of my high and sensitive instep, both to get my foot in and out, and for comfort; pointy toes IF the shoe is otherwise comfortable and fits well, because my toe box is also wide. Selecting my normal shoe size in a wide width generally doesn’t help, because then it’s too wide in the wrong places.

Also athletic shoes and hiking boots, because toe bruising is not a good thing, and feet swell with a lot of exercise/running/hiking.

Camisoles sometimes depending on the material and cut so I can get a good fit in the bust.

What is size? On any given day, I can be wearing on the same body, at the same time, any size from XS to XL. A tight cami? I size up to L or XL or else it will ride up and be annoying. My new raincoat is Petite L (based on careful reading of reviews) and it fits exactly right through the body, waist and shoulders. My new casual knit jacket is size XS. How does this make sense? I don't worry about it! It is what it is. My pants size is generally consistent, my shoe size, if the shoe works with my low volume, fussy feet, is usually consistent.

I don't like a snug fit in most things so I guess I size up, but definitely in boots because I like to have some wiggle room. Also pj's as has been mentioned -hate a tight waist more than anything!

What kkards said. In my 20s and 30’s I was size 8 shoe, after kids 8.5, another few years (and lbs!) and I’m an 8.5 or 9 and I go 9.5 for running shoes and sometimes booties? The years take a toll, and sizing could be different too. And as another poster said one brands size 8 is another brands size 12 as far as fit.

Some sizing up in tops and footwear and loungewear— but what Liesbeth said .
Not sue is “ sizing up” or “ right- sizing”!
I do like a more fluid fit in tops so a lot of my tops are M or sometimes L when you’d think that would not be my size. but I have to be careful or the armholes and shoulders will be too big. So I have to make myself walk away if the sizing and fits don’t work right.

I’m kinda sizing DOWN in pants- not really per size itself, but watching fits more. I used to buy them too roomy or accept cuts that were not quite right and that looks more frumpy on me.

Lounge/ Pj’s though— need roomy but again, I’ve passed by some that just didn’t look right in either the fitted or roomy size. Trying to be more picky.

Hmm, I search for better fit (eg cut wider in the body but still with correctly placed shoulder seams) rather than size up. A true size up on me generally looks just that: like my clothes are too large.

Love the idea of buying men's pjs! Women's winter flannels seem to be widely available in garish colors and "fun" prints, whereas I much prefer something more peaceful for sleep.

Also agree with everyone who's paying less and less attention to the labeled sizes, which appear to be all over the place at the moment.

Footwear for sure. I would rather have to add a heel grip pad than have blisters from too-tight shoes.
Tops, generally. I prefer a longer, looser top over a skinny/slim/cigarette pant. That has been my comfort zone since, what, the 80s?
And I, too, prefer to go up a size for leggings. I wear leggings to be comfortable, and they're not comfortable if they're giving me a muffin top LOL

Honestly I eyeball items for size and don't really go by the label. But I have oddly found that sneakers are less comfortable in my size and work better in random larger sizes.

Sometimes with body-con clothing I will size up so it fits in a way that is less clingy. If I can get a top to skim over me instead, that's a plus. It depends on the cut whether that strategy works or not.

I don't think of it so much as "sizing up/down" as adjusting to different brands inconsistent sizing. I can wear 3 different sizes depending on the maker. Generally, the higher the price point, the larger the size for me. It seems vanity sizing goes both ways. I don't really care about the size; If the fit is good I am happy.

I find myself sizing down recently. Tops, and shoes mostly. Due to changing fitness routine and age, I have lost some muscle mass in my upper body, and gone down a half size in shoes. The last 3 pairs of shoes I bought are 9’s (vs 9.5) and I put inserts in EVERYTHING.

I bring a range of sizes with me in the dressing room, because nothing beats a try on, and sizing is pretty inconsistent anyway.

I seem to be manipulating size more than ever ! I've gone up a 1/2 size in a lot of footwear this year - which is weird , but it seems to feel better . Always size up on workout tops as I cannot stand the look and feel of a tight workout top on me, or anyone else for that matter. And I'm with Janet - I always size up in sleepwear. Loose and roomy FTW.

I sometimes go up half a size in cold-weather footwear to accommodate extra pairs of socks. My feet get cold and don't like to be constricted. I could understand doing this with outerwear in order to accommodate layers, but I tend to search out coats that are cut roomy enough to begin with (although I still don't have a coat that I'm happy wearing over heavy blazers, so maybe this is something I need to think about).

I can't come up with anything else where I deliberately size up. When I go for an oversized fit in jeans and pants I usually regret it, because most of them relax sufficiently after a few hours of wear that the next size up ends up being too big in the wrong places.

I often have to size up in long sleeved tops and sweaters because I have long arms. Those are the most frustrating items, because the items are then usually bigger in the body than I would like. I also often size up in footwear because I have long toes.

Footwear for sure I have long feet and need the extra space. Sometimes jeans as I often am in between sizes, and sweaters. Sleepwear I don’t like feeling restricted.

Sweaters and shoes. I have to wear something under a wool or cashmere sweater otherwise the slight itching drives me crazy. I also like the roomier fit on a thick sweater.

With shoes, I like a roomier fit at the toes Plus I can wear thick socks and add insoles if necessary.

I often size up in some sweaters . I like to wear a tank or turtle neck underneath some sweaters and I like them on the longer side too!
