I am definitely more experimental on the bottom and more interested in simple JFE on top. This is due to my body shape more than anything. I am just an easier fit on the bottom half.

To Firecracker's point, I definitively think it's harder to have both. Interesting/colourful top and basic bottoms is an outfit formula in its most basic form, one you can base a whole wardrobe on. But throw in a pair of crazy pants, and suddenly you need neutral tops to go with!
On the other hand, I did find that as I built a better wardrobe, once I added coloured and patterned bottoms my outfit options seemed to expand exponentially, and toppers that had been languishing came out to play. It was a leap forward.
I added these bottoms around the same time my body went from hourglass/pear to something more middle-aged. But I also realized that the right print can disguise some fit or self-conciousness issues around the hips and thighs, where previously I defaulted to black and dark denim for ease and flattery.

I don't have any patterned pants. I have a few patterned skirts. So mostly I wear pattern on top. But I like to have interesting bottoms--zippers, seaming, pockets, distressing, odd leg shapes--all kind of noise going on! I have a lot of plain bottoms, too, but probably half of my pants are kind of statement-y in this way. Maybe that's partly why I find outfit creation so difficult with my wardrobe at times. Lots of interesting pieces, but what to wear with them?

I mostly wear patterns on top, with plain bottoms; but lately I've been in the mood to shake it up a bit and go the other way. Boredom has set in, I guess.

So interesting to read! I so agree and think body type and facial features make a difference in how well one can carry embellishment on top or bottom. For example, I thought I was a pear so I definitely focused on my tops. Now that I know I am a rectangle, I am still focused on my tops! Why? Maybe it's because old habits die hard! I suspect however, it's because I have a long neck, a small chest, my facial and skeletal features are small and dictate that I cannot handle a lot of pattern or extra material. I purchased a printed skirt for fall. I am still getting used to it, and having a hard time figuring out ways to wear it. I don't have cargo pants, or much variety in my bottoms. It's the shoes and boots I change up!! Lots of variety there. Does that count as bottoms? What category are shoes? ;-)

Yes.

How is that for an answer? I was going to say tops but then realized that I have some bottoms I really love too. I usually wear more color for tops but not always. So I guess my answer is that I don't have an answer. Some outfits have more interest in the bottom half and some on the top half.

Interesting replies. Suz, you're probably right -- our body shapes probably inform our choices, whether it's conscious or not. Except not always, I guess -- AJ is an IT and doesn't have many statement bottoms! I'm more of a straight rectangle than an IT -- straight limbs, hips and waist -- but since, unlike many rectangles, I do have a bust, perhaps I am drawn to 'louder' bottoms to balance that out. I don't think it's just that, though. I think part of it is that I just like bottoms and shoes with personality! Which might go some way to explaining why I have so many neutral, simple tops. When I shop, shoes, pants and skirts generally come first, and then I look for tops that will 'go'.

I am happy with either, but as a result I have several bottoms that only go with one or two tops and vice versa. I do pattern mix occasionally but usually prefer pattern on one item and plain on the other.

I definitely prefer and mostly wear plains and subtle pattern in neutrals, and am happy to wear bright white jeans and occasional coloured pants, though being petite, I err from patterned pants. Now and then I'll wear patterned or stronger coloured tops and coloured pumps. The interest in most of my outfits comes from natural colours, detail, simplicity and accessories rather than bold colour. It is hard to say whether it is top or bottom for me, they are probably equal.

As an IT, I really should have more statement bottoms, but I don't. I bought two pairs of shorts this summer in bright pink and tomato red, but they did not get much wear. I only have one pair of colored pumps, otherwise I prefer my shoes to be neutral.

I don't do much in the way of pattern & colour (more of a neutrals person) but I love track pants bottoms & harem pants with some structure on my upper body. Anything REALLY classic in my wardrobe has to be in beautiful fabric & fit really well.

Great question! I wonder if it depends on body type to some extent. At least for some people.

For me, it used to be solid bottoms, patterned or "interesting" tops (or layers). And I do still wear that combination fairly often, especially in summer.

But if you ask me what I really prefer, I think it's "interest on the bottom" with sleek and classic (and somewhat subdued) on the top. I have developed a distinct fondness for patterned jeans (not that I have a lot of these) and white or light jeans (which naturally call attention to themselves). I don't seem to like brightly coloured pants (I bought a pair and promptly sent them to MaryK when I discovered I wasn't going to enjoy wearing them). But I enjoy patterned skirts (VC black and white tube skirt and Halogen striped skirt) and even brightly coloured skirts (which do not feel "wrong" on me the way that bright pants do.) I'm also happy to indulge in detailing on my bottoms.

I love patterned and coloured footwear, too. Again, I don't have a lot of it, but what I have, I truly enjoy.

Hmmm--- I think I'm equal. I do a lot of classic tops and a lot of classic bottoms, although I think I have a few more fun and wild jackets and tops than bottoms. But, I make up for it with loving colorful shoes, fun belts, etc. I also love red shoes and cargo pockets. For bottoms, the thing is is that I really like to get several wears before washing since I can get away with it, but not with tops. That said, the lighter the bottom the more stains or dirt I show without realizing!

Interesting. I am like you, AZ; I have lots more interesting bottoms than interesting tops. I think it is partially because I absolutely have to have petite sizes for tops, so there's not much selection. But I can often get away with misses' bottoms, so it's there that I find the variety I like!

I think that an interesting bottom is more unexpected too, which may also play a part.

Solid bottoms for me, with interest on the top. I tried the other way around and it didn't work too well to try to do both with a minimal wardrobe. I like shoes with interest, but not a pattern. Texture is okay, though. Oh, and remind me not to buy any more printed coats, jackets or sweaters!

Very interesting. I favor plain bottoms with interesting tops. Simple footwear, yet fancy scarves or necklaces. Every now and then I experiment with a printed jean or brightly colored shoe then I find they just languish unchosen in my closet.

I also notice I have many more tops than bottoms. A mix & match capsule of tops & bottoms does not make much sense to me, if the top stays the same the outfit reads as the same to me no matter what the bottom is.

I used to wear black pants with patterned tops. So I guess i go for interest on the top. Old habits are hard to break. I don't think I own even one pair of printed pants.

I like bottoms with ALGO because I feel it's balancing. I tend toward plain tops. But I will do both.

I was wearing my snake print pencil skirt today, which I love (it's got a giant snake print that wraps around many times, with the head down by my left knee), and it occurred to me that most of my pieces with 'personality' go on the bottom half of my body. I don't know why this is. Anyway, most of my tops are grey, black or white, and usually quite simple, whether sleek and fitted or drapey and loose. But I've got lots of interesting bottoms. If I wear colour at all, that's normally where it goes. Besides the snake print skirt, I've also got a black-and-white stripe mini, three different plaid skirts (one of them, a pencil, in bright red and black), orange pants, red pants, and a black pencil skirt with giant ampersands printed all over it. Any embellishments, like cargo pockets or brightly-coloured buttons, are also generally on my bottoms. Also, I have two pairs of red shoes, a pair of red booties, black-and-white spectator shoes, steampunk booties with lots of buckles, steampunk calf boots with burgundy buttons, and tall white go-go boots. All shoes that command attention. :-)

Anyone else notice a top-versus-bottom lopsidedness to their wardrobe pieces, in terms of distinctiveness?
