Great thread, and my answer is definetely YES!
I like only dark(black/charcoal-and no color) pants on me (except white jeans in summer)! My winter jeans are all black (matte or waxed) except one-which is dark blue fadded(and worn only for very casuals). But I do like a grey denim skirt, a grey tweed/wool pencil, or shift dress better then all these in blacks:-).
I like my outerwear layers(trenches and coats) to be black or white, but never wanted/had a black leather jacket- I have one in white and another in tan instead:-). I nowadays cannot make work a coat of a color on my (bigger) frame or my lifestyle. Oh, I have a golden brown trench for fall outfits, too but that's all.
I like my booties to match with my tights, so they are mostly black. Have two in shades of brown, but wear seldom and only to my few pants.
I like my spring and summer shoes and bags to be colored (navy/coral or mustard/yellow/burgundy-for fall), but of course, I couldn't live without the basic blacks and creams:-).
My tops, pencils and summer dresses are all over the place ref. colors and prints. But reall picky about colors, prints and patterns in general, esp. on my top part.
I like my hosiery to be mostly black(sheers or opaques), wear tan sheers only on the rare occasion when really cannot do bare legs.
Wow, it has no end....really:-).

AND it changes over time . . . in CO I had all but eliminated greys that weren't a dark charcoal, but in southern AZ suddenly I'm wearing lot of lighter greys and loving them as a less heavy neutral. I think that the year-around gold from the sun is helping though. My really heavily black wardrobe seems too heavy for casual wear except at night. I'm wearing more plaid and more color, plus more light neutrals. I wish I had a couple of casual light neutral dresses or trousers for weekend wear.

What an interesting question and eye-opening answers. It made me wonder about why I have such hard relationship with white turtlenecks and especially black jeans, although both are my primary neutrals.

Oddly I don't care for black leather boots, or purses either, now that I think of it. I was recently looking for a pair of black booties, and each time I saw a style I liked, all I could think of was how much better they would look in cognac! I finally settled on black suede!

An interesting question and something I have thought about a few times. I would have to say for leather jackets or skirts and pants, I would prefer not black, although do like black leather in footwear and purses. Not sure why this is - perhaps just saw too much of it at one point?
The other thing I've realized is that in regard to non natural materials, like polyester, I'm much less likely to like bright colors, although fine with more muted colors and neutrals. The exception for me would be if the style itself is very artificial eg something mod for instance. Otherwise, I much prefer if wearing something bright to have it in a natural fiber.

Ladies, this thread turned into something fun! I truly enjoyed reading everyone's response. I think these 'color preferences' is what makes each of our styles so unique even when we may have the same or similar wardrobe items.

I see brown leather jacket fans and black leather jacket fans.

Blue denim fans and those who prefer other colours.

There are a few of us that wear black pants and coloured tops and some that avoid.

It is great we are all different....and I used to avoid pink gym wear but in desperation about three years ago I purchased a pink Under Armour Hoodie, and I liked wearing it so much it is now one of my most worn looks..and I have added pink sneakers and pink trimmed shorts

Wow, this is a fun thread. My preferences (or maybe be honest and call them prejudices?) are totally irrational and definitely shouldn't apply to anyone except me. :)

Duffle coats should be camel, peacoats should be navy, trenches should be black or tan (never navy), and puffers should never be white (fears of being mistaken for a marshmallow?). Evening wear looks best in black, with the odd touch of deep purple or ink blue, if you must have colour.

All white is tricky--can be frightening (Miss Havisham? Nurse Ratched?) or make one look like she is selling ice cream. Of course, if one is a gorgeous Italian girl in a white dress on a Vespa, or an ethereal blonde goddess, these normal rules do not apply.

Leather looks best in natural tones--with brown tones veering towards the more casual end and black on the edgier or dressy side.

Denim should be denim blue--ranging from faded to deepest indigo. White shirts and Ts are over-rated; black and indigo are much better. Khakis should be khaki-coloured--tans or dusty olive.

Pink in woman's athletic gear, especially ski equipment, makes me grit my teeth.

What an opinionated old broad, I am...

The item that I want most in neutrals is socks. I probably would not wear socks or tights in a color. The closest to something other than black or brown would be something like taupe to blend with footwear or when it would not show at all.

Fun question! For some reason, all of my outerwear purchases the past couple of years are gray! A gray dress coat, a gray parka, and now recently a gray fall jacket! I'm not opposed to color, truly, but I just love the versatility of gray. I used to gravitate toward brown (and tan) like Style Fan, but lately I've been in a gray mood. That's not to say I'm in a blah mood! I just really love gray lately! And I love that I can add a colorful scarf and gloves to jazz it up a bit.

Like you, I don't think I would choose a black leather jacket. I'd be much more likely to go for brown leather. I also love and have quite a few brown leather handbags and boots.

I guess in pondering this question, I've realized I tend toward neutrals for outerwear, boots, and handbags.

As far as jeans, I like all shades of denim, from very light and faded to very dark. I do have a pair of gray that I've worn quite a bit this fall, but I recently purged my black skinnies because they weren't very comfy.

I never wear pastels, but I really love dark, moody shades like burgundy, indigo, dark olive. However, I also love cream and will happily wear a lighter column of color in shades of cream, tan, and beige.

Will definitely have to ponder this some more. Great question, Manny!

For sure. The big one for me is that I don't like non-neutrals for pants. Every time I buy a pair of pants in a color like burgundy or evergreen I feel like I'm wearing pajamas in public. (Ridiculous bias, I know!) I did just buy a pair of eggplant cords...trying to consciously push my comfort zone a little bit, and the color works really nicely with a pair of grey boots I have that are very hard to match with other neutrals.

I also don't wear brown shirts because then I feel like a UPS driver. :)

Another one: I don't like to pair blue tops with similar shades of blue on the bottom, because it reminds me too much of scrubs.

Interesting question! Hmm, let me think. Well, I am not interested in leather jackets that are not black, although I like many colours of leather for handbags, shoes and belts. Having said that, I prefer natural-looking colours for leather (brown, tan, black), or sometimes red, but never pastels or white. And while I really don't care for white leather, a white wool coat is fab.

If I were going to splurge on a really good wool coat, though, it would be navy or black, or possibly heather grey -- not a bright colour.

I like olive green a lot, and it suits my colouring, but I mostly prefer it as pants. I have one olive green top that suits me but for some reason I don't wear it much.

I prefer black on top and colour on the bottom, not the other way around. I don't care for any colour top with black bottoms. This means that when I wear black bottoms, I also wear a black top. Or, occasionally, a navy or ink blue top, which reads as almost black.

What a great question! I like my jeans to be blue. I don't like really dark denim but prefer faded denim. I do have some dark denim but it is a bit faded. I prefer olive green puffers. I realized this after looking for a new puffer for 2 weeks. I have an olive green one and I do not want any other colour. I like my other coats to be some shade of brown. Dark brown, cognac, tan. Any brown with do.
Shoes are almost always brown. Belts are brown.
I love leather coats and suede coats in brown.
Actually most of my wardrobe is brown and olive green.

For me, it's not so much that I only like certain materials when they are specific colors, but that I only like certain colors when they are done in specific materials.

I only like "denim" blues (the more faded ones, especially) when they are actually denim. I've never liked chambray for this reason.

I also hate the color brown in
everything except leather. I think cognac leather goods are beautiful
but I'd never buy or wear any other material in cognac. I still like
black leather best though!

Great question. I like black or a very dark color in fitted garments that may let lumps and bumps cast shadows in a lighter color. I'll have to give this more thought.

Totally. I don't like to wear black leather jackets because they feel visually too heavy for me.
That doesn't prevent me for having one, though.

Yes!
I only wear jeans that are blue or black, even though neither is my favourite colour.
I like charcoal grey, but only wear it in sweater form, and wouldn't wear it as a tank top, blouse or dress.
Dress pants are only black or grey--preferably black--and never navy.
Leather jackets must be either black or dark grey.

I reserve black for dressy pants, leggings, footwear and bags, and maybe the odd layering top to create a column of black under another colour. A black dress would have to be in a soft fabric such as velvet or lace. Black leather near my face would look truly dreadful.
Brown is used only for shoes and bags, and then it has to be a cool-toned brown such as dark chocolate.
I love to wear colours, but only on my top half, unless in a dress or skirt. They also feature as accessories - bags, scarves, jewellery and gloves - but not usually in shoes.
Navy and silver grey are probably the only colours that feature across my whole wardrobe in any garment.

YES. Makes sense.

For my own style, I prefer jeans to be white and turtlenecks to be black.

Again, for my own style, I don't like grey at all - in any shade - accept in a very light silver tone in a textured knit when worn with light blue or white.

This may seem like a rather odd conversation. But this thought struck me while I read and commented on grandfashionista's jacket thread.

It seems like I prefer certain colors in specific garments. For example, I love black but don't like to wear black leather apparel, choosing tan, brown or burgundy instead. However, I love black leather handbags and shoes.

Similarly, while I absolutely love grey trousers, I don't like to wear grey jeans. I prefer dark jeans in either blue or black, or like white jeans. I suspect this may be because I wore grey jeans ALOT when I was younger. I don't like grey in denim at all when it comes to jackets or vests or shirts or shorts.

I really love light grey sweaters and grey wool coats, but don't like grey in polyster or quilted jackets. And I love red and pink in wool coats but don't like them in jackets at all either.

Do you have any such preferences?
