I like our Sleep Number mattress. It was an emergency purchase as we did not move our old mattress and needed something to sleep on ASAP.
It does not rock the bed when one of us gets in or out. It is. It too heavy to move. My son got a mattress at IKEA because it came in a box that would fit into a small car. It is in their guest room and seems reasonably comfortable.

I had high hopes for the memory foam mattress, but didn't work well for me. The MyPillow Mattress Topper really held up well for a couple years, despite my disgust for the owner. Came time to get a new mattress, knew I wasn't going to send any $ to his company. Got a Purple Brand bedset, love it! Pricey, but worth it!

We just got a new mattress in the middle of March. It was a really long and arduous process of lying on every type of mattress out there. Early in the process, we decided that we liked the feel of hybrid mattresses best - the ones with individually wrapped coils and foam on the top. But I have some issues with some types of memory foam: the high density type where you can feel you handprint after pressing it gives me the creeps. I just can't stand it. I am okay with the lower density foam that doesn't leave impressions.

We ended up going with a Denver Mattress Telluride mattress. It felt almost identical to and slightly better than the Beautyrest Black, and it was less expensive. After a month of sleeping on it, I ADORE it. I am getting better sleep than I have in years on a traditional mattress. The hybrid makes for less motion transfer, so we don't wake one another up when turning over or getting out of bed; the foam is just right for a side-sleeper and my shoulders no longer hurt in the morning, but Dh likes it as a back sleeper, too. It feels slightly warm, but that is likely due to the mattress pad and the bedding, as the foam is supposed to be cooling. But that also means that I don't need a heating pad at my feet anymore.

At the beginning of the shopping process, we definitely had sticker shock. It seemed absolutely absurd to me that we paid more for the mattress than for a king sized wood frame with a sleigh headboard and storage drawers! But at least new mattresses don't need box springs (honestly, I'm not really sure the old ones did, either). But it is money well spent.

FWIW, Denver Mattress also had a Colorado King, whish is 1 foot longer than a traditional king. We considered it, as Dh is 6'8" and hasn't slept with his feet on a mattress in years. He ultimately decided it wasn't worth it, as it would have been difficult to find a frame. I tried to push for it, but he insisted he was used to regular mattresses and had no issue with them, so we ended up getting a regular king.

My husband says the type of springs we got were individual pocket springs. He didn’t like memory foam when he lay on it. He did more research than I did by visiting many stores and says that Chinese made one was the most comfortable and just “ticked all the boxes”. He also said he thought we paid $1700 for the whole thing, base and mattress.
Because he sleeps less well than me and is bigger (6 foot 4) I just lay down on the one he had chosen, found it fine, so we bought that. Some were way more expensive than what we got.

It really is mind-boggling how many mattress options there are now. The last one I bought (after weeks of research) was a Saatva, purchased online at saatva.com. Excellent mattress, made with mostly organic materials, and it feels as good as new ten years later. It seems strange to buy a mattress online, but it worked out fine for us. One of my friends bought a Casper mattress online, and she is also very pleased with hers. I believe both companies have trial periods, and you can return them if you don’t like them for any reason.

I’m as confused as you, so I’ve been gathering data in anticipation of the next time we need a new mattress. When I sleep on a particularly good mattress at a hotel, I strip off the linens to check the brand! So far, Beauty Rest comes out on top.

I want to ask questions about support throughout the mattress. There is a 50+lb difference between DH and me, and I feel like I end up rolling towards his side of the bed! Due to the type of mattress we have, we can turn it, but we can’t flip it.

Also, I think I’m going to consider a lower box spring! With a high bed, high box spring, and high mattress - I have to climb up to get into bed, and I can’t sit on it whiteout my feet dangling (and I’m not short!)

30 years old- yikes- definitely time to replace! A good mattress is Definitely worth the $.
There are the coil type and the memory foam, then hybrids of the 2. Ours is either memory foam or hybrid. If you have it available in your area, go to a closeout type place and Not Mattress Warehouse (I think they're on commission and our experience was Awful). The place we ended up buying from had unsold mattresses from department stores, so ours was like $800 for what would have been several thousand.
Lay on the different types/firmnesses of mattresses. When it's the right one, you'll know.
We did have a sleep number thing before, wouldn't recommend. It had this plastic frame in multiple parts that didn't stay together well. Hated it.

How much do you want to spend? I have a Duxiana which is ridiculously expensive, and has some limitations on the decorating front, and is heavy when it’s cleaning time, but it’s the best sleep ever.

Peri we have had 3 in our 36 year marriage. We bought the first secondhand in 1986 after marriage and used it for 14 years. We kept reading about how you shouldn’t use them too long so in 2000 we bought a new bed, a recognised NZ made brand on a good special, in store. Then in 2018 when we built this new house we went around lots of stores and lay on lots. We bought one with a “pillow top” and the type of springs that are supposed to prevent “roll together”- I’ve forgotten now but it may be called coil springs? I did a lot of research online about that sort of thing. It was Chinese made (cheaper) but by an NZ bed store “to NZ tastes”. Maybe $1500 although again I can’t fully remember. Happy to say we still love it 4.5 years later.

Way, way, way off topic??! I guess you can't feel fab if you can't sleep, so maybe it's allowed. :)

Ours is overdue for a replacement...it's at least 30 years old. Old days...go to a mattress store, lie down on a few, take your best guess and hope you like it.

Now there are so many kinds I don't even know where to start. Sleep Number? Memory foam? And OMG they are expensive. Any advice at all?
