I got some for my parents several years ago after we had a major ice storm (I got 5" of compacted sleet, it stayed for days, black ice everywhere). It was exceptionally dangerous; a woman I know got a concussion on her front porch and my cousin broke her arm. Of course we haven't had anything like that recently, but I really wanted them to be equipped. It could happen any winter. My dad is 6'8" and that is a very long way to fall. The yak trac is far superior and you can hike rough terrain, icy walkways etc. I think Pajar offers a boot that has flip down spikes which eliminates the hassle of the on/off. I haven't owned a pair. My compromise -- because, remember, I lived in a small city when I lived in your climate, and our house was in the downtown core -- was a pair of those boots with vibram "Arctic Grip" -- I think mine were by Merrell but a bunch of companies now use this technology. However, that meant wearing the same boot on ice all the time, and also, while they helped on city streets, they would not have been enough for rougher conditions.&nbsp;</p> <p>Friends of mine in Kingston tried Yaktrax and a bunch of other versions. They all do essentially the same thing. Most people like them a lot except they are better for country wear than city wear. Thanks God we got them because there was ice everywhere. They worked wonderfully but at some point, the rubber broke off on mine.&nbsp; Find a good pair.
