These are good for trails, but not the city

It looks like they came out with a lower profile version that may work better on sidewalks & pavement

I'm really glad to hear the votes for Yaktrax! I got some for my parents several years ago after we had a major ice storm (I got 5" of compacted sleet, it stayed for days, black ice everywhere). It was exceptionally dangerous; a woman I know got a concussion on her front porch and my cousin broke her arm. Of course we haven't had anything like that recently, but I really wanted them to be equipped. It could happen any winter. My dad is 6'8" and that is a very long way to fall. I'm glad the Yaktrax are good ones.

Yes, we use Yaktrax. Our house sits on a hill and our driveway is fairly steep and gets icy. They work great on ice, even black ice, and stop the sliding. If you wear them on non-icy surfaces they wear out quickly. I purchase the heavy duty version. When they are new they can be a nuisance to put on and take off your chosen footwear, but I am certain they have prevented broken bones among my family members.

Icebugs work super well. I just get sick of wearing the same ones every day.

I have a pair of sneaker/boots with Vibram soles and like them best, if one has black ice, it may be to late when one realizes that YakTrax are needed. .

I have a pair and also a pair of cheaper ones that roll over the front and back of the boot. The yak trac is far superior and you can hike rough terrain, icy walkways etc. I think Pajar offers a boot that has flip down spikes which eliminates the hassle of the on/off. The BaY carried them last year.

I think for the conditions you live in, they are a really good idea. I haven't owned a pair. My compromise -- because, remember, I lived in a small city when I lived in your climate, and our house was in the downtown core -- was a pair of those boots with vibram "Arctic Grip" -- I think mine were by Merrell but a bunch of companies now use this technology. However, that meant wearing the same boot on ice all the time, and also, while they helped on city streets, they would not have been enough for rougher conditions.

Friends of mine in Kingston tried Yaktrax and a bunch of other versions. They all do essentially the same thing. Most people like them a lot except they are better for country wear than city wear. If you are going in and out of stores, for example, you've got to take them off and put them back on -- kind of a pain.

I've used them and they work very well. LL Bean sells a version called Stabilicers that are supposed to be better if you'll be walking on non icy surfaces too but I haven't tried them myself.

We got a similar pair that was rubber as we put over on our shoes when we went to Iceland. Thanks God we got them because there was ice everywhere. They worked wonderfully but at some point, the rubber broke off on mine. Find a good pair. You won't be sorry.

I've never used them but we did find Yaktrax for my cousin, who does a lot of winter hiking (in northern England though, so is gets snow and ice, but not piles of it like here) ... anyways with that qualification, he loves them.

I have perpetual issues with ice on my driveway and on the roads when I'm walking in winter. I have a pair of studded boots, but they're only ankle high, so I would like to be able to wear, other warmer ones. I've been reading reviews of these things, and I can't decide what version is safest and easiest to put on the boot.
