My initial response was to say no, until I read Angie's response. That's why I love this website so much. I learn something new here every day, and I am constantly challenged to open my mind to new possibilities. Thanks for starting such a thought-provoking thread, mamaKate.

What a great thread with excellent points made by all. To me, there is a difference between being able to recognize a bag and a bag that screams its name at you. I can't stand the Coach bags that are heavily logoed, but the more classic designs are great. Whenever I see a bag that broadcasts its identity via billboard sized logos, I tend to think its a fake.

Suz, that's funny about the Coach bag tag! When I was young I bought a Coach bag at a regular retail store. I asked the S.A. what I should do with the bag tag and she said, "Well, *we* would never leave it on, but that's up to you." I took mine off.

I don't mind small brand identifiers. But here's my pet peeve: Slovenly dressed women carrying a heavily branded designer bag. I'm talking locker room sweats, plastic flip flops and a dirty white wife beater (men's tank style undershirt). When I hear the advice to spend your money on a really good bag and it will take your style up a notch, I'm sure no one imagined these women doing it quite like that. It makes be want to avoid bags in the same category as theirs just to set myself apart!

Kate, I giggled with recognition reading your post; the rebel in me hates to buy anything just because everyone else is, and that is part of the reason I dislike visible logos, even on handbags. However, if it is very tasteful and part of the design I can imagine buying such a bag (if I could afford it) and in fact did recently thrift a vintage Coach bag; it doesn't have a logo but has the little Coach tag on it. And I haven't torn it off. (Yet.)

Ditto Angie by a million %
I am not a fan of the Coach logo :(
Most designer and higher end items have a brand of some sort somewhere and I proudly wear some of my most treasured items that have brands...when I was younger and couldn't afford the quality I didn't quite get it...why would someone pay that kind of money for a bag, trench, designer jeans etc...
At my age,I also care less what other people think of my beautiful designer items,... logos and all.

Angie hit the nail on the head for me. For example: I really do not like Coach bags that have the monogram printed all over it. To me, that basically feels like the person who buys the bag is paying for the privilege of wearing a huge advertisement. However, I don't mind logos that are part of a design - for example, there was a discussion somewhat recently on the forum about some Tory Burch flats that had a metal buckle with the logo; to be honest, because I'm not that familiar with the brand's logo, I just thought it was a pretty buckle and didn't think anything of it.

I'm a bit more conservative as far as wearing labels myself than I am towards what I prefer on other people. At this point in my life, I don't feel comfortable with my visible labels being big enough to read unless someone is standing within a few inches of me. One of my pairs of glasses has the brand name printed on the sidearm, but you literally have to have it within a foot of your face to read the text. My Franco Sarto handbag and Armani Exchange jacket have very small visible logos, too.
I actually considered purchasing a goooorgeous mustard Kate Spade handbag that we were looking at during the Seattle meetup at an outlet store, and still am debating. What held me back was that even though the logo is tasteful and small, it's still very recognizably a Kate Spade bag, and I need to think hard about whether I'm ready to make the step of carrying a recognizable, though impeccable quality, designer bag. I *know* there are people around me who would view it as being silly and pretentious, regardless of how long the bag holds up over time, or whether I bought it on sale in the first place.

I'm not a fan of visible logos, but if there is a bag I love (and I do love handbags) and the logo is not too prominent, I'll get it anyway. However, there are a lot of things I reject because the logo is too prominent. I don't feel a need to publicly identify the makers of my possessions, especially when I'm wearing them. For me, it distracts from the look, unless the look and the designer are synonymous (like Chanel bags & jackets, not that I buy at that level anyway). I don't have bumper stickers on my car either...

I'm anti visible label/logo on anything, including handbags. My north face grace trench says north face on the outside, but otherwise I think my wardrobe is name brand free. I have had people know where my items were from (a scarf from gap and a banana republic dress come to mind), which I don't mind at all, but I don't go around telling people where I got my clothes or how much they cost (unless I'm asked). As much as I support designer brands, I would rather support independent designers. I've also bought designer things secondhand, but if someone knew my jacket was Ingwa Melero from Bergdorf Goodman or my belt was Coach, I would feel the need to explain that I paid $26 and $12.50, respectively and including shipping, for these items.

Has anyone seen how the Polo logo has grown to, like, half the size of the shirt? It's hilariously surreal. Somebody at Ralph Lauren has a black sense of humour.

Anyways, I don't like noticeable logos. I don't care about being made into an ad patsy nor would I deny people their tribal identity and insignias. I do find it just a little bit pathetic that people care more about the logo than what the logo is on.

Mostly, tho, I find it indiscreet. And also, I actually like clothes - I'm into the art of clothes, not logos.

What I'm hearing is a subtle but important distinction between appreciating clothes of a particular brand (which fit, flatter, are well-made, etc.) vs. wearing logos on the exterior. What I was referring to in the original post was the latter. Handbags are a key example, where logos are often visible from the outside. Handbags also seem to be the item most frequently sought out because of its brand. For my part, I shy away from handbags with labels on the outside. Angie's point about it being a privilege to carry a handbag from a certain design house is an example of the alternate perspective I was hoping to drum up.

If we limit the discussion to handbags with labels on the exterior, then, would you change your vote?

I think there's a spectrum from tasteful branding and garish, tacky branding. Really big logo's repeated all over as a pattern are too much for me, but a skeleton key hanging from my Fossil purse is just fine, and kinda fun.

We have had this discussion a few times on the forum, and it's a great dscussion :)

I don't mind subtle branding at all. My Prada, Valentino and Chanel bags are prized possessions and the branding on those darlings is tasteful and exquisite. I don't mind my subtle Kate Spade branding either.

I have the utmost respect for well recognized designer brands because of their legacy and impeccable quality. Having been in the fashion industry for 2 decades, I get what it took for those design houses to get there. While I don't like HUGE logos at all, I feel privileged to wear the brands that I do wear because it means so much more to me than being a walking billboard. I support the skill, craftsmanship and legacy behind the brand.

I am not a logo person at all. I like certain brands because they work for me or like their style, so I do have brand loyalty. However, I don't like being a walking billboard. I feel way too conspicuous and I feel as if the purpose it would be a conversation starter/announcement, but I really have nothing to say about it....if that makes sense.

I don't like it either. Most of the women wearing clearly visibly labels look like they're trying too hard to me. As if the item alone isn't enough to carry their look. There are exceptions to that, but I wouldn't wear something with a huge label all the same.

I'm not a brand-logo person myself either. As a teenager, though, fuggedaboutit! That said, I love trawling through thrift shops and finding pieces I love - and later seeing the labels that happen to be inside, a well-known designer or brand sometimes. It doesn't bother me at all - fashion is where you find it, in my books. However, I am still in-training style-wise, so sometimes I rely on many people's gushing recommendations about a certain house's cut or quality to be sure I'm making a good buy. Over time I'll learn whether I agree or not, but initially I'll be aware of it. Some may enjoy wearing the big splashy name in the front of their shirts or on their butts, etc...and more power to them. But it's just not really my go-to taste.

The discussions about eurochic have reignited in me a curiosity about why people wear (carry, drive) items that flaunt the brand. Clearly many people enjoy associating themselves with desirable brands, otherwise top brands wouldn't be so popular (and expensive)! What is your preference? And, why?

For my part, I find myself really resisting wearing anything that proclaims its logo. Superficially, I don't like "being a walking advertisement." On another level, my independent streak resists any form of label. And I'm sure there are deeper subconscious levels that are hidden to me.

(This resistance on my part is occasionally quite irrational, for example, refusing to buy an iPhone even if it makes sense for my needs and lifestyle.)

Your thoughts?
