Great question and I love the very real and honest responses! So good to know we're not alone. Embracing pale, white skin. (High five Toronto Girl!) Showing spider veins. (High five Angie!) Not hiding broad linebacker shoulders. (High Five Una!) Likewise bony clavicle and tiny, small chest. (High five Joy!) Tall and over 6 ft in any heel. (High five Sveta!) Own them all. As I've gotten older, I've decided life is much, much too short and I'd rather spend my time on things other than trying to be something I'm not!

I have a long torso and stumpy little legs. (I'm 5'2"; when I sit next to my 5'10" husband in our dining room chairs, we are the same height but my feet don't touch the ground.) In dresses and skirts, which I don't wear often, I'm happy to wear things that lengthen the leg line, but I strongly prefer trousers and jeans, and I like them low or mid rise.

I also usually wear low heels or flat shoes. Just. Ain't no trick on earth gonna make my legs look ACTUALLY long, so I'm just going to be comfy.

Own it.

At 6ft I will not shy away from heels if they feel right for my outfit. I am more likely to dismiss heels because of the comfort factor, not extra height they'd give me.

And as pear, I no longer desperately try to hide my thighs. I have learnt how to achieve the outfit balance and - more importantly - happiness with my outfit, to focus unnecessarily on what I used to perceive as imperfection. Today I'm wearing plaid pencil skirt.

What a funny, great thread. My are exactly the same as yours April. Same effect with my much taller (3inches) sister and the bathing suits BUT when I got to the description of the bulge at the armpit I was laughing to self - ditto.
A friend of mine who is a classically trained and practicing sculptor says it is the sexiest part of a woman. Fleshier the better. So there you go...

I used to hate my bony shoulders and chest/neck, but have embraced the shoulder line as helping my thick waist to look proportional and my little cupcakes, like Suz wearing regular bras. It feels silly to try to give the impression that something is there when it isn't. I also let the grey hair alone and bare old crepy upper arms and veiny legs when it is hot. Yes to flats though I'm short. I prefer to hide the apple tendencies though.

I'm short, too, and have "owned it" probably since my early 30's. Prior to that (and most especially when I was a teen) I almost always wore heels. Then I just said "eff this. I'm not average height and I'm never going to be and I'm totally okay with that. Short jokes be damned!"

So I started alternating heel heights more often and have some equally fab flat shoes I enjoy wearing even if the outfit might have looked better with more of a heel. I developed arthritis in one foot over a year ago and, while I can still wear a towering heel on occasion, I've found I like mixing things up in terms of flats and little heels even more often now that my arthritic foot reminds me I'm no longer in my 20s and insecure about my height :-)

I've also been "owning" my crazy-curly-do-whatever-it-wants hair since my mid 20's. Prior to that I almost daily would blow dry it straight. What a time suck. Life is too short! Besides, on really bad hair days (super frizz-ball days) it gives me an excuse to wear a really cool hat!

It's no secret here that I have a love/hate relationship with my legs. They're long and strong -- they have carried me through three half marathons in the last couple of years, as well as countless bike rides, hikes, walks, and runs. They are the main contribution to my height (I'm quite short-torsoed in comparison), and I like my calves and ankles, even though I, like Angie, have the beginnings of spider veins and quite pale skin.

As for hiding them or owning them? I vacillate between the two. I will not wear patterned skinny jeans or other styles of bottoms that make my already-sizable thighs look bigger. But when it's 95 degrees and humid outside (which is frequent in our summers), I often say eff it and wear shorts that show my chubby knees and cellulite-ridden thighs. I'm generally happier when I can hide or disguise my sensitive area, but there are some things like the B44 striped bodycon dress that make no secret of the fact that I have significant hips and saddlebags.

I can't say I take any pains with hiding anything else about my body. I'm not especially proud of my upper arms (again, cellulite), but in summer I'm gonna wear sleeveless tops if I want to. At 5'7" I've never wanted to be shorter, so I've never avoided heels.

There's not a lot of hiding my shoulders. I don't go out of my way to emphasize them but I am proud of them as they come from bone structure and rock climbing, so I don't downplay them either.

I do not embrace my unfortunate midsection and sorely regret not realizing how good I had it back when it was just a cute and tiny little pot belly.

Short: I wear flats and very low heels anyway. Comfort first.

Meaty thighs: Love them. No shame. I'm strong - this makes me happy.

Giant chest: I'm moderately conflicted, but I usually want to show off my teeny-tiny waist ... which means I can't hide much.

Harry Potter forehead scar: I like my hair very short. Get over it. (Never mind my mother who keeps encouraging me to cover it up.)

Graying hair--I prefer to think of the gray hairs as my sparkles or nature's highlights

Broad, strong shoulders-- nothing dainty or delicate here but I'll proudly showcase mine with epaulettes, horizontal stripes, and boat necklines (sometimes all in the same top) because they give me presence and confidence.

Sturdy legs and blobby knees--these legs have climbed cliffs, walked hundreds of miles, and skied down mountains. I cherish them and show them off every summer in shorts of any length.

Interesting thread, Elisabeth and fun reading the responses!

I have fairly muscular arms and legs, and have no problems owning them. But I more often than not hide my belly, because I just can't get rid of the excess post-pregnancy flesh there! I guess I should own that part as well as the tiger stripes, but I can't say that it's a favorite part of the body. On the upside, though, I do have strong abs; you just can't see them very well ;)

I have fairly short legs. (As I've said on this forum before, my sister is six inches taller than I yet we can wear the same one-piece bathing suit. Her height is all legs, and mine is mainly torso.) I don't prioritize making my legs look longer. I just try to avoid making them look like outright stumps.

The one thing I will only hide and never own is that poochy, bulgy, foldy area that appears right in front of the underarm, perhaps due to a bra or bathing suit. I've seen swimsuit and lingerie models with these same issues -- incompletely airbrushed out -- so I know they're just part of being a female with breasts. (According to my doctor, breast tissue continues right on into the underarm.) But they still look like droopy flab and I hate the look. So if I wear anything sleeveless, it must cover this area. Non-negotiable.

If you're not sure what I'm talking about, the first two swimsuits below show the effect I hate, while the tanks in the last two photos have the sort of coverage I'm looking for in that area.

Own it -- no choice. Ever since I found out 10 years ago that drowning myself in over-sized sweaters (read blankets) did nothing to hide my bustline and made me look heavier than I am I stopped. However, in order to own it, that does not mean I'm going to run around wearing cleavage baring outfits when everyone can already see that they're there. Good fit is good enough for me -- no need to show off the obvious.
I stopped coloring my grays (yes I have lots) because my hair is really thin and the last time I colored I got a free hair cut (my hair fell out). I guess I don't care about wearing glasses they stop my eye strain, and deal with my photo sensitivity.

I hide my grays...they tell me I look much younger than my age, and I started going gray in my early 30s. I do admire women who flaunt it, though. I am just not there yet.

This has been so fun to read! And Echo reminded me I also own my natural hair colour, even though I very rarely see other women with it, most would describe it as mousy or dishwater blonde, and hairstylists often start mentioning highlights. It took me quite awhile to get to a place where I love the colour & prefer it on me to artificial ones, but I'm glad that I'm there now because it's so much easier & cheaper to not have to worry about dyeing!

Most things I embrace - natural skin colour, natural hair colour, broad shoulders, short stature, etc. But I do like to downplay my tummy. Although I am approaching the age where it won't be as much an issue, "embracing" a large-ish tummy can mean emphasizing it and making people think you are pregnant. NOT a good thing!

I have very pale skin ("pasty", my blunt British dad comments, with love of course) and I couldn't care less. I've just learned to own in. Uncooked chicken skin jokes be damned!!

Very interesting thread. Thanks, Elisabeth. I' bet you are cuter than cute in flats.

Some of my outfits look better with heels - like today's outfit post. But I love flats. I'm fine with looking longer in the torso.

My short hair makes my very long neck look even longer. Quite dispropotionate to the rest of my body. So be it.

I wear specs because I can't stand contacts. I own my eyewear - and have made it my style.

I have hectic spider veins on my legs. I bare my lower legs in the Summer no problem (as long as it's warm enough to do so). My legs work hard each day. They deserve to breath vitamin D.

Yep! I'm short but wear flats almost all of the time and just own my proportionally short legs by rolling up my trousers and then wearing contrasting shoes or by wearing skirts that hit below my knee with flats. I also have a smaller than average bust, which looks smaller in boxy woven blouses. The goal isn't to make it look smaller, but I really like those types of blouses, so I just don't worry about the effect!

My answer is yes and no:) Sometimes I do hide those things that I don't like so much (e.g. apple tummy) and other days I don't. It has a lot to do with how and feel and what I want to wear on any given day.

I need to wear "sensible" shoes at work for long days, walking and standing, and some unexpected events, but I have made it more of a goal to keep them updated, so for present style trends I have targeted oxfords, slipper flats, ankle boots, and some ballet flats. This is kind of akin to Gryffin's message post--if I am wearing something that might be considered trendy in my community (woo-hoo!) it is important that they also look like they can go the distance, and so that becomes part of the message of choices made--as in, fashion-forward utilitarianism!

I have muscular legs, especially thighs. It used to bother me, but now I like it and wear skinnies almost all the time.
