I am an outlier here. I have horrible luck with houseplants. I have a Monstera that is barely hanging on, three years old. I have it on a window seat after my dog pulled off some leaves and shredded them….they are toxic for dogs. Thankfully she didn’t eat them. I love Bonsai. If I add anything it would probably be a Bonsai although I have no idea how to care for them. The Denver Botanical Gardens has a beautiful collection that I visit whenever I visit my youngest. I admire everyone here with a green thumb!

I don’t have a green thumb and I have killed more houseplants than I want to admit. My good friend is the opposite, and when she moved to Toronto 18 months ago, she left me bunch of her plants that she was not able to take with her across continents. I am trying hard not to kill them, they are still alive and even my cat is cooperating. I am now feeling motivated to start with gardening in my small garden in our second home, and would appreciate advice and help from more experienced gardeners here.

Yay for houseplant love. I have houseplants in every room and keep a vase of cut flowers on my kitchen counter. I have two arrangements of dried flowers. That was a thing of when I was a child but people don’t seem to do that anymore.

Oh and echoing Angie! I'm a tulips girl. I love the clean line and impact of the solid colours, from.white to bright (yellow currently). When they show up, I love having a bouquet on the table. They were my wedding bouquet flower too!

I'm a hopeless gardener and house plant keeper but that doesn't stop me from trying!! Currently I have two shamrocks, a zz plant and a snake plant, which at least stay alive in my low natural light living area.

I have lots of houseplants and enjoy caring for them. i should take some photos.

I'm a much better house plant parent than I am a gardener. I like the garden in theory, and I like it when I am out there working on it, if I can get into a meditative state -- but the thing is, it's too big for me, it overwhelms, I feel I'm never done with it, and then it makes me feel tired and frustrated. I need a tiny tiny garden instead of a big one. Or one that someone else cares for.

I have many houseplants, and enjoy caring for them. My mother had quite the green thumb and loved indoor and outdoor plants, flower beds, and vegetable gardens. Growing things makes me feel close to her now that she’s gone. But I stick to houseplants mostly, and some patio flowers in warmer weather. I know what I can handle.

No house plants because we have cats. I rarely buy cut flowers. I love gardening, but I prefer working only with shrubs and small trees. The only garden space where I have flowers, as well as the herbs I use in cooking, is our roof deck. It's a beautiful floral kingdom in summer. I use mainly annuals and flowering shrubs, like hardy hibiscus.

I LOVE houseplants.

We have cats, so our plants are all cat-safe and kept out of nibbling reach. Because of the kitties I rarely indulge in cut flowers but could not resist a bouquet of daffodils last week (not cat-safe but I am keeping a close eye on things).

The viney plant that is trailing along the wall in the photo is almost 20 years old, grown from a cutting of a plant that was given to my mom as a cutting. It's a Hoya carnosa -- I love Hoyas and have amassed a bit of a collection of them!

I grow orchids. I have 14 of my own currently and am rehabbing two for friends. I love them because the flowers last so long I almost have flowers year round. I'm in the market for two more but they have to be different from what I have so I'm searching slowly and being choosy.

Indigopint, yes! My Bonsai are different kinds of junipers, and they must stay outside. They are "outside Bonsai"! They would die inside. They are between 15 and 20 Years old.

I took a pic a minute ago. They are coming out of Winter and will look magnificent over the next 6 months! The leaves will begin to grow and be very green. I will prune soon too :)

Team cut flowers here. Big bunches of colored flowers!
I do not keep indoor plants. I am a notorious indoor plant killer. I forget they need watering. Growing up and still living in the countryside I am used to outdoor plants that grow easily and need just some water here and then. When it is not flower season I often buy myself a colorful bouquet at the grocery store or at a street stand.

Having had cat/s in the house for the last 20 yrs, both flowers and house plants were a no-go. Now that that has changed (!), I took my first foray into house plants a month or so ago and bought a snakeplant and a ZZ plant. I really missed having plants in the house and I'm thrilled. Adding to the collection slowly as I figure out what's best for the sun exposure they get. I love gardening and flowers and miss my perennial beds a LOT. That used to be my summer activity and I spent hours and hours at it. I make do with my balcony plants but it's not the same. I'd love to have fresh flowers in the house too, but need to improve my vase collection first. I've actually been toying with taking a flower arranging class as plunking a store bouquet into a tall vase doesn't quite cut it ;).

Yes, we have house plants - orchids, succulents, and a ficus. We also have a plant that is either a Philodendron or a Monstera. If someone knows for sure, please let me know. It was tiny when I got it a couple years ago. At some point, if I don’t kill it, it will be too big and heavy to carry to the sink to water. I have a couple good years ahead of me, probably.

I also have a bunch of tomatoes. They aren’t house plants. They got to go outside for the first time today, for 15 minutes. I started them March 12. We’ll plant them around Mother’s Day. It looks like a lot, and it is! Last year we had 25 tomato plants and it wasn’t too many. I love love love tomato sandwiches!

Yes and yes. I enjoy house plants, have several including a Jade plant that is 35 years old. This year I over -wintered some of my annuals.
I make bouquets from my outdoor flowers too.
I have always been interested in Bonsai gardening but have not tried.

Angie, do your Bonsai stay on your deck year round? How old are they?

I have three Bonsai on our balcony, that you can see very clearly inside. They are a big part of the decor because of all our windows. Bonsai gardening is a hobby. VERY tricky to grow and look after. I love Bonsai! :)

We have two BIG antique Asian vases that are filled with green or white seasonal plants. One BIG vase outside our door with a shrub too.

As for bouquets at home - TULIPS (yellow or orange), or big fat yellow roses. My faves!! Nothing else. No greenery. Just one colour on the flowers, or adjacent colours that match the house.

Or do you make bouquets from cut flowers (purchased or from your garden)? Both or none of the above?

I’m a gardener, and will buy flowers or make a bouquet from the garden on a whim. During the winter holidays, I bring greenery indoors. I’ve never really kept plants indoors - other than a geranium I bring inside before the first frost, and use to make cuttings for plants that will be moved out of doors when the weather permits. (I’ve kept the DNA of one geranium going for 5 years!)

I was ‘gifted’ a peace plant 3 months ago, and it hasn’t died yet. Today I bought a 4.5ft potted palm for my reading room. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep them alive, and maybe they will even thrive. Already thinking of repotting the palm (just one size up) because it seems root bound…

What are your thoughts on plants or bouquets in the home?
