Hmmm, I'm too much a lover of variety to wear any one thing very often - I'll have to make a blanket statement and say my shoe collection.

No, I haven't seen it; sounds interesting. I've been to a renfaire once, and once bought a totally impractical cloak in that style off Ebay. That's my fantasy style.

Alasse - what a gorgeous image of medieval ladies dresses and belts!! Did you see the "Robin Hood" with Patrick Bergen and Uma Thurman? - she was exquisite in her wedding dress. I have a major thing for renfaire style clothing!! You do have very pretty hair - I don't think changing up the style negates it being literally your "crowning glory!!" It certainly is a focal point no matter how you style it!!

That is an awesome belt, Gryffin. I have this strange attraction to hip belts with chain/link detail - I think because medieval maidens always wear some sort of low-slung girdle like that across the hips of their splendid gowns. Not sure that an hourglass/pear should be wearing that style, but I digress.

I can't think of a lynchpin for myself, either. Belts are almost that, but I can be happy in some belt-less outfits. I'd say hair, but I vary the styles from updos to pretend-bob to long & flowing, so not that either. Brown? Haha.

Museumgal - as said so many times on the forum - the importance a great glasses and bra can not be overstated!! Great foundations to any outfit. I really like the idea of hair and interesting jewelry as trademarks. I know Imogen of IOS uses chunky necklaces for hers to great effect!!
Adelfa - sorry if this thread pushed a private choice into a too public arena. Whatever you choose to do it will be the right thing. Hugs and good luck!!

I don't think I have a single piece that works as a lynchpin. My jewelry and scarves are the closest I can come. Part of the reason I'm growing out my hair is that I kind of seeing it becoming my trademark ... that woman with the flowing salt and pepper hair (and the groovy jewelry) ...

Of course on a purely practical note, I'm don't leave the house with 1) my glasses, and 2) a good bra. Everything else ... shoes, purse, even jewelry, are optional at times.

Adelfa - I do understand now where the ambivalence comes in. Only you can know what is right for you. But I also know each of us a little inner voice and we know what that voice is telling us. Risk is a concern with any expensive purchase - but leather jackets tend to be pretty durable. You do have to decide if you are over motos, although I think that it's a classic style, but it may not be your style. You need to think that through. That being said my cropped leather moto is a total workhorse esp over dressy items. If I need to make something look cool - it's my go to jacket. Plus remember it's cost/wear - if you love it and wear it and enjoy it then it is money well spent. Bigs hugs and although I am wanting to be a total enabler (yes, Suz and Mary K I am shouting buy, buy, buy with you!!) you need to be happy. But if it's really the money, and not the other issues, if you can afford it, then I would go for it. Good luck!!
Mary K & Suz - so agree. A fantastic big ticket item and ramps up every other item is totally worth it!! Can't wait to see this jacket - I'm sure it amazing!!

Adelfa- from what I'm reading you are so NOT over moto jackets. As gryffin suggested, perhaps you are still grieving the loss of your first moto love?

Adelfa, remember our conversation in the crosswalk about nickling and diming our purchases, and how those less-expensive purchases added up to just as much as the big-ticket items, but without the "WOW!" factor? That might apply here.

Gryffin, thanks for asking. I have found the perfect replacement (Rae found it) but it is quite a bit more than I've ever spent on an article of clothing, so I am telling myself (1) it's wrong to spend so much; (2) it's foolish to spend so much because what if something happens? (Nordy gave me a full refund on the last one, but that was because it was a design flaw--what if an accident happens?); (3) maybe I am over motos, maybe they aren't really my style anymore, maybe it was an affectation.

See what I mean about the ambivalence?

Adelfa - that is just soooooooooooo sad about your moto. It definitely sounds like an amazing lynchpin. This is exactly the reason I duplicate so much but on expensive outer wear that is often not possible. I am curious, are you in mourning for this jacket? is nothing tickling your fancy? I would think this has created an enormous wardrobe hole...so yeah, I totally applaud that you are not in total freak out mode, but I am curious, since I would not be as calm in your situation. But wishing you the best of luck for a speedy and newly beloved replacement!!

Unfrumped - your flat undercover belt is a real find. I have not yet found one to do that which is why I almost never go untucked because you get that bump which looks awful!! Talking about a lynchpin literally!! Interesting that if there is a lynchpin belts seem to be player for many of us. Glad you have your BR contour belts. The thing I cherish about mine is the buckle is entirely metal so less risk of wear out. I feel your anxiety unfrumped about the ones you have, may other contour belts be in your near future!!
cciele - denim is the most fantastic fabric ever invented. I cannot think of a better lynchpin especially since designers have been so amazing creative with it. Great choice!!
Thistle - Many thanks!! Black trousers are the most perfect backdrop ever for an outfit. They can take you from black tie "Le Smoking" to casual!! Fantastic lynchpin!!
Mary K - you give me so much to look for in your outfits!! It's like "where's waldo" earrings were not enough!! The complexity underlying the refinement of your outfits is truly staggering. I stand in awe!! I have to check out this belt - distressed and studded - does it get any better? (since most of mine are crystal and studs - you need not even ask - yes they are all black!!) For catagory - no question your gorgeous collection of pencil skirts - no one wears that silhouette or color better than you do!!

If I go with my first gut response, it's the black moto I *used* to have (before it ripped at a stress point).

It was the perfect casual topper, of course. But it was also the perfect work topper, adding a nice amount of edge to my conservative outfits.

It was practical because it kept out wind and rain, and it kept me warm in my cold office at work. I also found I could travel to (what to me were) cold climates, and with a sweater and scarf, and gloves and hat if necessary, I'd always be comfy without having to lug around a coat.

So why on earth am I so ambivalent about replacing it?

Denim. Invariably, in the majority of my outfits I incorporate some type of denim, somewhere on my body

I have a belt that lies very flat and is worn undercover with many if not most trousers, when going untucked. And 2 BR belts that have the best fit and contour for wearing" out". Will be bad when these give out.

IK - jeans are a great lynchpin. If you don't limit yourself to straight denim but include leather, velvet, etc you could take them black tie. Perfect for all ocassions and a great trademark!!

Cinnamon Fern - thanks for putting up the definition!! I was going to head to dictionary.com but didn't get to it yet!! I like the visual, you pull that pin and it all falls apart. That's how it feels to me!!
Suz - I think haircuts can absolutely do that. Who knew Linda Evangalista was so gorgeous until she cut her hair? Can you imagine Anna Wintour with a pixie? or Dolly Parton without her big blonde hair? Although, big high five for the leopard print belt!! No matter how sleek or minamalist you go, put on a great belt and pow, you've got an awesome outfit!!

That is a stunning belt, and it's no wonder you love it and it has become your lynchpin. I can see it adding quiet drama and shine as well as structure to any all-black outfit.

I don't think I have a single lynchpin item. But I wouldn't mind having one, to be honest.

Like Gigi, I get an uncommon amount of use from my leopard print belt. CPW is far less than $0 now. And it seems to tie everything together somehow. But I don't think it's really a lynchpin.

Maybe the silver cuff my brother gave me when I was a kid qualifies? I wear it almost all the time. But again -- my outfits would be fine without it or I'd find some substitute. It feels more like a signature than a lynchpin.

I think in the end it is my hair. Without my short cut, my style just reads as dull and boring. The haircut makes it.

And literally, Lyn, a linchpin/lynchpin is a piece of hardware you use to keep a wheel attached to the axle.

A- thank you!! I was not sure everyone has one. Although, imagine Carolina Herrera without her white shirts or Steve Jobs without a black turtleneck. So, clearly some of us rely on a single key piece or class of pieces. But I would think statement necklaces would be a great lynchpin. They add so much drama and act as a magnificent focal point. Just something to think about
