Also love Apple products and have had good luck with long lifespans when I don't share them too much.
You'll get better Chromebook feedback from other people but, compelled to defend your husband and doggy, it could be coincidence that it died just at that moment and the crack could have been there unnoticed because there was no reason to look for it?

I have a lot of tablets, but no Chromebook. I've an aversion to how much tracking Google does. But they are slowly sucking me in. One of my fave tablets is the Nookbook. Samsung is making them now. I liked Nook because I love magazines and their magazine app had a 'clip' feature. Don't know if it still does.

Another Apple girl here. I dropped my IPad hard and its screen cracked, but it continued to work just fine. In fact I was proud of its gnarlyness. A year or so later I rec'd a new one as a BD gift, though the first one was still working.
I have an IMac for "grownup" computer needs, which are few these days.
My IPad goes everywhere with me. Best of all is that my IPhone, IPad and IMac all sync with each other...

A Chromebook is great if you mostly want to use it for web stuff. Because it doesn't have Windows or Mac OS it is very limited in what you can install on it. As someone else mentioned you are limited to using Google docs instead of Word and Excel. But if you are looking for something to mainly surf the internet or watch stuff on Netflix it is a good option. It is what we got our daughter when I didn't want her using my computer because I also use it for work. The only time she was disappointed in it was when she found out she couldn't install Minecraft.

I'm also all Apple as I have an iPhone, iPad and iMac (switched from PC three years ago). I do really like them all and the way they work together. There are some times when I'm typing a lot on my iPad I wish I had a small laptop, I guess I could add a keyboard, but I'll run up to my office and jump on the computer at those times. The reality is my iPad is 99% for entertainment and I'm very happy with it.

I'm also an Apple girl. I own a MacBook Pro (which I love and is worth every single penny I paid for it) and an IPad. I do not use my IPad as much as I thought I would. For me, the IPad is an expensive note pad (i.e., I could achieve the same exact result using a pad of paper and a pen). The problem? There have been glitches associated with the IPad syncing up. This may have been solved, but now I rarely bother.

I'm an Apple girl - I have a six yr. old MacBook Pro that I use everyday and it has never given me one moment of trouble. That alone is worth the price point. Hubs has a Dell laptop and a MacBook and he doesn't like the Dell anywhere near as much as the Mac. I've recently added an iPad Air (with keyboard, I also don't like always using the touchscreen) and I think I'm in love with that too.

I use a desktop for work. I do mostly all my browsing (including all my time on YLF) on my phone - an iPhone 6. All my apps and stuff is on my phone.

But I do have the iPad mini for times I want to browse heavily, see lots of pictures, or explore travel destinations. I quite like the size & weight of the iPad mini.

I got my dad an ASUS tablet last year. He's been pretty happy with it.

I have an iPad that I had been using faithfully for about three years mostly for web browsing but also for work when traveling. However it began to become slow in recent months as I guess its processor is not keeping up with the system upgrades. So I got a small rose gold Macbook, which I absolutely love. It's high price point, though.

Kristin, this is fantastically helpful!

Interesting about your issues with Gap checkout. My tablet was fine with Gap, but I couldn't even see the pictures of the clothes on the Loft website. A wee bit frustrating at times.

I had a detachable keyboard for my tablet so I never had to use the screen keyboard, thank heavens. I definitely want a decent keyboard, but I do love a touchscreen as well.

This will also be my *right now* laptop/tablet. At some point, I'll probably get a MS Surface, but I'm just not interested in spending $1000 right now.

Off to read through your links!

My Apple laptop was dying a slow death and I didn't want to fork out $1K plus for a new one. I use my work laptop during the day. At night, I need something just for surfing the web and doing email. Really basic. So I opted for a Chromebook.

I hate touch screens, I much prefer typing. This is the Chromebook I bought, it has no touch screen:
http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-.....&psc=

Overall, I've been very happy with it, most especially the price. I do not like the keyboard, but I hear that Toshiba has improved the keyboard with a newer backlit version. The screen display is very nice and it's fast enough for my needs.

You mentioned GAP and Athleta above. Occasionally I have weird issues with GAP's website when making purchases. Not sure if that's just me or what. But just a heads up. I move to my work laptop and complete my purchases there. That's happened maybe 3 times in a year.

The thing to remember about Chromebooks is that you can't download much onto it. So you're forced to use Google docs and Google drive. That's good enough for my personal usage requirements. Google photos is good enough for now, too.

I don't really use a lot of other apps. That said, more is coming to the Chromebook world:
https://chrome.googleblog.com/.....ng-to.html

So to sum up, this was the perfect laptop for *right now*, for my very specific (i.e., basic) requirements. This is my "bang around", "leave it on the couch", "no worries" laptop.

However, I do still need a laptop that I can use to process photos and videos, and for that, I much prefer a Mac. So I do see another Mac laptop purchase in my future.

Hope this helps!
