I have had a pretty funny collection of them throughout my life. I had yellow school bus cons, bright pink high tops (those were my favorites) american flag low tops (still wear those on the 4th of july) and low top pair that were made of a tapestry type material consisting of pink flowers on a hunter green background! I have to say I have not worn them much lately b/c I have gotten away from tennis shoes. Your father's comment reminds me of my dad's reaction to button-fly jeans when Levi 501s were popular (when I was a teenager). Honestly, in my rural community that only people that recognized them at the time were people in their 50s that had worn them as basketball shoes back in the day! I got lots of positive compliments from that generation and it was kinda fun. </p> <p>I can't wear mine anymore due to foot issues (need orthotics and they aren't deep enough even with the insole torn out) but I am not sure I would even if I could. They are so tremendously popular with all the teenagers these days (even the mall rat types). I still think they are cute on kids and on older men and women, but I think I am in the age group gap. I don't dressed polished or edgy enough to avoid the teenage connotations they carry. I think they can look very good on women that have a lot of style. It has to be a carefree, ironic look. My dad was a Doc Marteens wearer, so now, he's not talking about those. He's talking about low-class working men, like a... trowel? Not to say there's anything wrong with that, he actually worked on that for sometime himself. But it seems that during the 60s and 70s these shoes were worn by the people who hadn't enough money to but fancier training shoes. That is, if you were a cool, rich person, you'd not wear those -at least in Spain. So he just can't understand the trend nor the price of the shoes now. Maybe he's right to some extent.
