These aren't necessarily fashion-related, but some phrases that immediately come to mind for me are:

Cutting-edge.
Everyone on the same page.
Want to give you a heads-up.

Arggghhh! They drive me insane.

I have an issue with curvy as well.

I am curvy, the marilyn meaning not the modern one.

I'm glad that people are using positive words to describe bodies that don't meet industry standards, but when people steal "my" word & change the meaning I get cranky!

Handmade is the only word that really makes me fashion crazy, even though I used it myself today when I posted my art fair finds.... Those "Made in China/Mexico/Guatemala/Vietnam/Moldova" garments are made by hand too, but probably not in very nice conditions.

Not in fashion in general, but on project on runway, they use "taste level" quite a bit, as in
"the taste level is not quite there." It is a bit of a running joke between me and my husband, who sometimes watches the show with me.

Ha, Ironkurtin! My softball teammates called me droopy in middle school - my jeans were too big. There was the cartoon dog Droopy as well somehow in the association . . . all said in jest, but it's funnier now than it was then.

I don't mind any of those words on their own, but I do do dislike them in print when they start to form a repetitive, uninventive pattern. Lucky does this and it makes my teeth grind, but then, so do many authors whose books I've read. They may think of it as house style but it gets overused fast.

Words I loathe:
- jeggings
- swacket
They are not real words! They strike me as hideously twee. Skinny jeans or denim leggings, and sweater jacket, are just fine as indicators!

Other words I hate when applied to me:
- trendy (teens are trendy); I know this meas something else to other people, who like it, but it's just not the way I think of myself
- flat-assed (yes that's fLat, not fat)
- droopy
Pretty sure no one else likes the last two...

I love hyphenates with chic in back (ducks behind bush with Heather)...

But there are terms that confused me initially.

"Curvy." I am curvy, I have an hourglass shape. So I picked that option when searching for denim e.g. Then I realized it meant something else.

Also "athletic" as a descriptor of figure. It doesn't mean athletic, what it really means is, somewhere between slim and curvy when describing body fat percentage.

No confusion, but "thrifted" and "gifted" took me a while to get used to. I thought they were nouns, but now they are also verbs.

fyi...qvc /hsn shows that the word " luxury" and its derivatives increase sales. the hosts can watch sales merch numbers associated with phrases spoken during the segment and the word "luxury" moves merch like no other. hence the ubiquity.

LOL..I use "luxe" sometimes (as shorthand for luxurious, e.g., a silk blouse paired with a perfectly tailored camel coat), but I admit that there are several other words that drive me bonkers. I really dislike "obsessed" and "over-dyeing," and I have an irrational dislike of "sunnies" for sunglasses and the term "re-mixing."

Perhaps I will temper my use of the term luxe while on the forum :). It's funny how this is all so subjective...

Airin, although I sometimes enjoy cross-cultural borrowing I find this kind of erasing of culture - and language! - saddening too.

We even get that within English, with increasing homogenisation so that most of our pop culture words and idioms are becoming American here in Australia (although I have noticed, on the upside, Americans finally adopting a couple of our expressions, like "no worries" and even "bum")!

There are loads of fashion-y words that annoy me. Fashionista. On trend (an acceptable version of the old tryhard word, "trendy"). Everything on a Modcloth or Anthropologie garment blurb or even name - I just block those out and try to concentrate on the garment instead of the lifestyle fantasy they're trying to sell me.

Oh, and I hate the way Zappos videos describe detailing as "for added style" or "tons of style". Sorry, detail overload does not add style.

Colour blocking. For years I just thought that was wearing pieces made of solid colours.

Cognac. Cobalt. Jewel tones. These words get used to describe such a variation of things that they don't mean that much. And they're bottom line, jargony. I had to just now google images of cognac to check what it's supposed to look like. Probably would have called "cognac boots" a deep shade of tan before.

I hate it that Spanish retail stores more and more use English words for the items, instead of the Spanish word. As much as I love English -I've spent five years of my life studying it four days a week-, I hate it when that happens, especially because it's so obvious they do it just because it sounds cool. Sentences like this do happen (also in fashion magazines):

Combina tus DENIM JEANS con cualquier cosa, desde una BLAZER negra, pasando por un CARDIGAN o una cazadora de piel. Las T-SHIRT son lo más, sobre todo si llevan ANIMAL PRINTS. También puedes probar con el LACE. Cálzate unas COWBOY BOOTS o unas OXFORD. Controla tu MAKE-UP, no te pases y déjalo natural, el pelo tiene que parecer recién lavado y sin peinar, ahora se llevan las ondas californianas. Estarás 'READY TO KILL', y TOTALLY FUN FEARLESS!

We do have Spanish words to say all that, we just don't remember them anymore, which is very sad.

"Handfeel" makes me want to hurl my laptop/magazine/fashion medium of choice through a closed window...IT'S NOT A WORD!! Luxe irritates me too. :)
I find glam very overused, and for some reason I'm unnecessarily irritated by combinations including the word chic. I love the term on its own, but phrases like "boho-chic", "city-chic" and "geek-chic" really irk me.

"Handfeel" to me means when you stick your hand inside a surgically opened abdomen, and feel your way along the intestines to make sure you don't feel anything lumpy/bumpy/weird.

"Handfeel" seems like a phrase someone made up just to sound cool. To me, it just sounds silly.

People talk about the "hand" of a garment or fabric, which has to do with its quality. There's no reason to call it handfeel, unless you want to associate it with appreciating the finer things in life. For instance, in wine tasting, they talk about "mouthfeel."

Hmm, perhaps handfeel is "crewspeak".
