I am the same as you ... on the cusp of rectangular and hourglass. I am also pretty slim/lithe. When I put clothes on I feel bigger than I am ..but I like it. Because a lot of time I get away from that boxy shape ...and there's more figure. When I am undressed I just feel skinny and awkward LOL!

I feel bigger when dressed. Far too often fabric pulls at my biggest areas, something I do not have to worry about when naked. But I also feel tallest when dressed. Shoes can add height and elongate the legline, two things I will not have bare foot.

I usually feel smaller when dressed. I think it has to do with camflouging my thighs. I have a somewhat smaller upper body so I think I look more balanced when the hips and thighs are under wraps. Oh, and heels help the bottom half look longer and leaner as well.

I feel bigger when I am uncomfortably dressed and smaller when comfortable. If the fit is just a bit "off" or if the fabric is too stiff I feel like I'm in the wrong in skin. Well fitting clothes that skim and move easily with my body without binding make me feel more flexible and trim. I have found that I look bigger to myself when uncomfortable, which is a strange phenomenon.

I'm so glad someone brought this up! I am always surprised when I see myself in the mirror wearing only my underwear, because my waist seems so much more defined than I'm used to compared with my clothes on!
I guess this is a body type issue- I too am a short-waisted, IT/rectangular. I know I have a pretty straight figure but without clothes it doesn't seem that straight anymore.

Come to think of it - for me the issue isn't necessarily feeling "bigger" in my clothes but "straighter" and less defined, which perhaps to some extent equals feeling bulkier and bigger.

Scarlet - yes, I think drape and fit are key.

Examples:
* close-fitting (too tight!) clothes that show or create lumps and bumps = boy, do I feel huge!
* close-fitting clothes that skim my curves = do not feel bigger
* close-fitting clothes that actually reduce my measurements (i.e. Spanx) = do not feel bigger

* loose fitting clothes that drape beautifully = do not feel bigger
* loose fitting clothes that add bulk in places or proportions I feel are not balanced = feel big (i.e. a skirt with a lot of extra fabric around the hips)
* bulky clothes (sweaters, in particular) with no drape = can feel bigger...bulky knits need to have some drape, imo

But I'm just on my first cup of coffee, so I'll stop now!

Yes, because I have big boobs and it's hard for me to emphasize my waist with most tops. I feel weird in belts too, because I'm shortwaisted and have big boobs, so it makes everything look funny. And if the top is wide all over it seems like I have a belly when I don't. But oh well.

I do too, Julie, and I can never really put my finger on the reasons why. Except for one thing: since I've gone up one bra size (from B to C-cup), I do feel that plays a role in the overall look (clothes just drape differently) too, but I'm sure that's not the only factor. I'm looking forward to your post about this Angie.

Oh my goodness! I feel a million times better dressed. My clothes smooth over all my bumps. Also, my clothes can give me curves where I have none. Pants and skirts in the perfect length coupled with the right shoes make me look taller - even close to average height on good days!

Sorry to yell, but YES! I absolutely feel bigger in the torso when I'm dressed. I see it in photos too, so I know it's not just my imagination. I just got some 4th of July party photos back that made my heart sink. I thought my top skimmed my middle, but it ended up just adding pounds:(

If I don't dress my short-waist just right, I can easily look 10 pounds heavier around my torso. It's probably the most frustrating and challenging part of dressing for me.

Unflattering clothes (too tight or that add too much extra fabric/bulk to hips or waist make me feel bigger, and flattering clothes (either that skim my curves or even hide my waist) make me feel smaller.

crwilson -- that's why I gravitate toward tight tops! I've got boobs, and I do have a waist, but it's not all that narrow, especially compared to my hips. So what works best is a tight top and looser bottoms in a lighter colour, or a skirt with some fullness to it to add bulk to my bottom half. It's either that or wear skinnies with a loose top and just forget about the whole waist thing altogether -- but I've got to be careful with the loose tops, or I get a "boob shelf."

The problem with tight tops is that they cling to my lower belly pooch (thanks, pregnancies), which is unflattering. So I have to be careful to wear bottoms with a reasonably high rise, but not too high, or it looks like my waist is up by my armpits! Aaargh.

If I ditch ALL the clothes, I'm actually pretty happy with my figure. It's not perfect, but it's not bad. Too bad clothes have to go and muck it all up....

This is an interesting topic you've brought up, RoseandJoan.

I thought I was the only one! I definitely, definitely feel and look much bigger dressed. I think it must be the waist thing. I have virtually no waist because it's the same size as my hips. Plus I'm petite and curvy on the top half. I'm not a big person, but clothes make me look a lot bulkier unless I'm wearing something skin tight, which I'm generally not comfortable doing.

I feel this way too, Julie! I'm a slimmish hourglass with an almost sway-back (though I think it's just that I have a big round bum hehe) and most clothing makes me feel much bigger, especially from the side. Though at the moment most of my clothing IS too big, so I'm sure that helps I feel considerably smaller without clothing, and like you I always feel more like my proper shape/size when wearing "sleeveless items, skinnies or something which shows the clavicle", and to that I'll also add items that show some leg, and heels. Cinching the waist doesn't necessarily make me feel smaller, even though my waist is on the smaller end; hourglassy seaming/shaping seems to help a lot more. VERY much looking forward to Angie's post on this!!

I'm a pear-y hourglass and I usually feel a little self conscious in a bikini because i have hips and thighs, and to compound things, short legs. I generally feel pretty slim dressed though, and being able to accentuate my best features (a small waist and flat midsection) is what does the trick for me. If you have nice long legs (lucky!), then maybe you should try accentuating that?

I'm an tall, slender hourglass and look even slimmer dressed. I do like showing my collar bones and arms! I prefer fitted, not skintight. That goes for jeans, jackets and tees.

Accenting my waist is a must, although Angie has enlightened me about surrendering my waistline. But I never wear anything that is too billowy and unflattering.
