I have to admit, I use the hair elastic trick quite frequently. My weight seems to flactuate and if I didn't do this, my pants would either be too big or too small, all the time. If they fit everywhere else, you're comfortable and no one else notices, I really don't see the big deal.

Mary and Scarlet, I hope you do try it....I really like it and you can also use it for those too loose pants (gee, wish I could remember what THAT feels like!) It's a cheap price at Amazon, but its usually available at Target, Walmart, and many drugstores like CVS also....

I've never done it with jeans (just because the situation hasn't come up recently), but I've used a big safety pin to close a skirt that became too tight. I've since lost that weight and the skirt fits now, and I'm glad I didn't get rid of it. No-one ever knew! (except now everyone on the internet. oops).

Marley, your post makes me think of my teen years when I had to lay down on the bed to zip my Calvins - they were THAT tight. Once zipped, I could barely breathe, but boy, did I look fabulous (I thought).

Personally, I couldn't wear jeans that don't fit perfectly anymore; I DO prefer my jeans snug, but not painfully so!

Aside from pregnancy, when the rubber band trick was my best friend, I would not wear a pair of jeans that didn't button. I say love and dress the body you have by wearing clothes that fit well...get out there and get yourself a new pair (of jeans, I mean)!

Marley - If they still make you happy and don't make you feel bad and there's no way anyone will see your 'jury rigging', then who cares!

I have more than a few pair of pants that I am too lazy/cheap to have altered, so I use a big ol' safety pin to pull the waistband tighter. It only makes me feel bad when I run to the restroom and have to deal with it. During the day, I couldn't care less (and that's why those particular pants will never get to the tailor). . .

the elastic band trick sounds like a cheap (read: free) way to extend the life of jeans that are just a bit snug, esp at that time of the month.

I personally wouldn't do it... but then due to my shape, if I can't button them up, chances are they are fitting me like leggings and far too tight to be comfortable seeing as my waist is always looser compared to my thighs LOL

You can also get "belly band" things for use in maternity situations - its like a band of stretch fabric that sits over the fly region and above (from memory they are around 12"+ wide???), so you could always pop something like that on to help hide it in the event of any tops rising up... it would also help to keep everything in place..

I have used the elastic band trick. I heard about it from pregnant friends but never tried it due to the bad association until my mega-fashionista friend said she was wearing her jeans that way. We both gained some weight moving to Germany, go figure. I also picked up a couple of pairs of jeans that fit better, but replacing my whole jeans wardrobe over a couple pounds here and there is just not in the cards for me. Lately my bigger jeans are too loose, and I am wearing the old ones again, so I am glad that I hung onto them.

ETA: I also never had a problem with the zipper and that perfect fit button kit is intriguing.

I'm a bit heavier than normal right now so I have some jeans that are a little snug at the waist. They fit fine everywhere else and this will be hopefully be a temporary situation so I'm using the ol' elastic in the button hole trick right now. I've never had the zipper pull down when doing this (pregnant women do this ALL the time). No way am I going to abandon any jeans from my collection and hopefully everything will fit fine in a couple of months!

I would pass them on - clothes that dont fit properly make me feel uncomfortable and dont do anything for my self esteem knowing that they are too small. It's hard to get rid of stuff that you really love like these but I bet there is an even better pair waiting out there for you

Why dont you pick up the 'perfect fit' button kit? its really easy to use, costs around $10 and wont damage your jeans...plus you can easily remove it if you go back to the original size...

I never have but a friend of mine uses a hair elastic looped over the button, through the button hole and back over the button to keep hers closed when she's heavier. Her weight see-saws though and the jeans will fit again.

If you don't think there's a reasonable chance that they will fit properly again soon then I'd donate.

But if you feel good in the jeans and you are absolutely positive nobody will be able to see the unbuttoned button, no matter what, I guess I don't see the harm in it.

Is that really tacky??? I am going through all of the jeans in my closet and just came across a pair of black Hudson wide-legs that I love - but I've gained weight since I bought them - and now I can't button the top button. Shall I ditch them - or, just wear a top that covers that unbuttoned waist? They still fit me perfectly in every other way - and I love the look - I wear them with my squared toed black boots from the 90's - but . . . there is something about not being able to get that top botton buttoned that makes me wonder if they should go in my donate bag.
