Very happy to cosplay, though- was recently Tigger for my three year olds birthday party! And would love a D'n'D inspired cloak that JJ posted a while back.....!

lol @ Rae - I try not to cosplay at work, although I do have a bunch of pins on my white coat: I have a Star Trek badge, and I have a Homunculus pin (from Fullmetal Alchemist); I recently added a mockingbird pin (Littlefinger from Game of Thrones). I use them as conversation starters for patients and the staff love them.

Sure I play dress up. I just call it something different. Outfit creation, wardrobe curating, wardrobe purging, capsule creation -- these are all activities where I am playing "dress up" -- trying on my clothes in different ways.

When I come across an outfit I like, I try to photograph it and come back to lit later, when I need an outfit in a hurry.

Unless one is cosplaying at work, I don't see how professionalism is at all applicable.

But back to dress up, yes! I do not have too much time lately, but it is fun to imagine upcoming events and think about what I might wear. Barbies and dress up were my tomboy exceptions, too. I wss known to show up to elementary school in elaborate 90s outfits and then gonplay tag and basketball with the boys....

I do! Although not cosplay or anything. I am also a moody dresser like MsKatie, so I do tend to be the girly-girl with my fit & flare dresses on some days, on other days I'm the punky goth girl, somedays I am bohemian in my maxi printed skirts or even all bombshell in my pencil skirts. I generally do this to bring some variety in a life that has become quite mundane with routines & responsibilities of being an adult. Changing up my persona externally makes me feel happy and if nothing else there is a sense of variety in my life. It gives me a sense of control, in a world that can feel mundane yet chaotic at the same time.
As a child one of the first things I did after purchasing a Barbie doll was to buy her a wardrobe where I thought I would store all her dresses & shoes. Unfortunately things were economically little tight then & all I had was a tennis skirt & sneakers to store for my Barbie's closet. I really didn't like that empty, spare closet and I maybe that is why I stuff my closet with so many clothes now. Luckily for me I am a thrift shopper too, so I don't exceed my monthly budget.

Shevia- not thats what I'm talking about. You have such wonderful style and grace. Go ahead and play everyday. I am not able to wear what I truly want to at work because of work restrictions and safety guidelines so I play dress up when I can.

Firecracker - I think you are so right getting lost in the fabric store is what I would compare to be the same thing. Be able to lost in something using your imagination to have fun with whatever you find your joy in.

Interest question. It sounds like you get a lot of satisfaction from your wardrobe and really have fun with fashion, as Angie says. That's great!

I kind of feel like I'm playing dress up with I shop and try on things someone brings to me that I wouldn't have picked myself.

I play in my closet sometimes and get lost in trying to put different outfits together. I don't reminisce about clothes so much, though; I think I turn them over quickly enough that they don't bring back old memories. Although some do.

Oh, and I can lose a lot of time browsing in a fabric store, imagining just what I might make out of this piece and this one, and that one over there. . . .

Oh, I almost forgot. I do have a Ren & Dickens faire friend and go every year in costume... But let not anyone be fooled into a false sense of security: I'm a mean girl, and I insist upon deodorant.

Returned to ETA: I do like to play dress up, in the sense of trying to do all sorts of different styles and looks - and it's one of the things I'm trying to reign in because I want to put out a more consistent and true message...

I view playing in my closet as a version of dress-up. I didn't have a lot of opportunity to express my personality as a child, so I am doing it now through dress. I try on lots of different styles, and it is so fun! You can take on different personalities through the dress-up, which I think contributes to your own real personality. I don't do anything too crazy, but I do like to push the envelope with my comfort zone.

Suz- Oh go and play it is so much fun. Do it without a critical eye or passing judgement on yourself. It reminds me not to take myself so seriously. We have to be so grownup all of the time so many responsibilities so many people and things to take care of and do. I allow myself time to play because I am the responsible one always doing what needs to be done.

Lyn- I am so sorry you lost your partners even more so for you being told it was not professional enough. I wonder why people choose to take joy from others like that. When I was in the Army I would always tell myself and my soldiers "don't let people steal your joy". I call them joy stealers. Sometimes, people cannot be happy or have other people be happy around them so they try to crush others by saying things like what you have been told. Don't be afraid to find someone new or just be true to yourself and give yourself permission to play.

I love cosplay, but I've been kinda told it's not really professional. And I've lost my partner (both of them; one to marriage because his wife doesn't want him to dress up with me and thinks it's a weird sexual thing ... but it's not); and my other one decided to break up with me so... *sadface*

Dressup was my favourite game as a child. I loved, loved, loved it. Dug into my mother's and my girlfriend's mother's trunk for their old things, made up characters, and played them out. Created dramas and assigned roles to my friends and then we all played. (And I directed, LOL.)

Then as a young woman I worked in retail. Tried on all the samples as they came in and pranced across the room. The clothes didn't fit me and I could not afford them, but it was fun to pretend.

But honestly -- as a grown up? I haven't really played dress up for years. Except for the rare costume party.

Ladywone, you are inspiring me to try to do some more of that. How fun, how fab, to imagine and play!!

Ladywone, I DO play a lot! Like you, I played with Barbies as a kid, but mainly for fashion (and my Barbies were superheroes... Hah!). I also made paper dolls because I lacked sewing ability and I was able to conceive a character idea and flesh it out and made her a lot of outfits!

As I grew older, I started (miserably) hacking off clothes and remaking them, though I was never (and to this day) a good seamstress. Even 2+'years in my unfinished Fashion Design major didn't do my (lack of) sewing skills any good. I made clothes but they fell apart!!! Gah!

Back in fashion school my inspirations were the characters in my head. I was really fascinated by goth/Victorian/Edwardian inspired fashions that I designed with that aesthetic in mind. At the time, The Matrix came out as well, so my designs were heavily influenced by that aesthetic.

I also mentioned in Angie's article thread that I'm a mood dresser. Often (the night before), I come up with my persona and dress as that person. I still do it to this day, given that my personal style is a mishmash of UWP, romantic, and avant-garde. One of my wrap dress outfits come to mind here where I did not wear a single piece of UWP/edgy RATE hardware and went full on feminine romantic. On the opposite end, I sometimes would feel more Superhero and would sometimes channel Nikita (the Maggie Q version) and would wear faux leather (waxed denim) Jeggings, a black RATE tunic top, some kind of tough jacket and tough tall boots.

Dress up.

When I was a little kid I was a tomboy who loved Barbie dolls. But I never liked any other girly things. Not at all some things I am still regretting. But now as an adult one of the things that I love to do is play in my wardrobe. In other words play dress up. It gives me inspiration, helps to motivate me makes my heart sing and uplifts me when I am feeling down. I use to feel this way when I went shopping at the thrift stores.

At the thrift stores I would think about the people that donated the clothing or the family that passed on a loved ones things. I thought about the history not always about vintage clothing but, about the person that wore the clothing. That is why I can spend hours in the thrift store and it feel like a blink of an eye.

Now its like some type of transference has happend where I get the same feeling from my own wardrobe. I think about where I wore something who I was with. Was that a difficult time in my life and how I overcame that obstacle. How I would style something if I was an Office worker or a celebrity. I sometimes dream of how to put together an outfit or what would happen if I cut up something and what would the outcome be. I always say that said item came from the thrift store so if it does not turn out the way I imagined in my head it is ok.

So am I alone in this playing dress up or do you do it too?
