Velvety and Krista, hope this helps you! It has helped me many times recently.
Velvety, I so understand you. Good for you to take a lesson away from this. Letting others stay in one's house is a big deal. There is a trusting issue, but I think most importantly a privacy issue too. Sometimes we just need to keep some things for ourselves. As long as we don't keep them from ourselves doing so! Don't be too harsh on yourself. I'm sure you will find it.

I lose things all the time, but my fashion loss is a cobalt blue glass heart that I bought myself 15 years ago. It has been lost and found before, but this time it has been gone about a year. I cannot understand why that one necklace keeps running off!

Krish,

Thank you so much for the prayer - I just saw your post tonight, just as I'm getting ready for bed (Monday evening). I'll try the prayer - and thank you for the suggestion, much appreciated!

I know the box is around here *somewhere*! Hopefully, it didn't end up in the trash or anything (unlikely, but you never know I guess).

I think there's a lesson in here for me. It's the idea that just because I'm doing something new to me, doesn't mean I should throw the baby out with the bathwater, so to speak. I've always been very trusting and assume the best of people, places and situations. Somehow, last fall - because I was going off on a big deal (to me) trip and doing something new - I changed my own routine and even my perceptions about things. Hence shoving that box in some 'safe place' somewhere. (insert 'roll eyes' icon-smile thingie).

Thanks again, I will try the prayer - it can't hurt!
I don't usually lose clothing items, unless DH *helps* put the clothes away. Even though our kids have been doing their own laundry since they each turned 13, he forgets, and allocates some of my clothes to them for some reason (usually socks or T-shirts).

This past winter it grew cold and I was looking all over for my black yoga pants. They had been hanging from a skirt hanger in my closet all summer, but suddenly they were missing. I accused my daughter of borrowing them. I accused DH of putting them in my son's closet. I was furious, I was hopping mad. I was cold. Then one day I opened my dresser drawer to get out a black camisole and there they were, in the stack. It was then that I remembered I had "re-organized" my closet and stored away the pants, when they were out of season. *gulp* I had some apologizing to do!

Donna - The earring I lost was indeed on my "phone ear" but I just never thought to remove the earring before the phone call. I had a good look around my desk and in my desk drawers today, though! I still have hope

Krista;
Might that earring have been on your *phone ear*? I sometimes pull off the earring on that side because it interferes with hearing or is irritating my ear. In your situation, I might have placed the earring in a desk drawer, or more likely, in some obscure deep pocket in my bag, because I knew I would be leaving soon.
Velvety, sit down and close your eyes, breathe calmly and repeat to yourself : I will find that jewellery box. You can use this prayer to St. Anthony of Padua that I use:
St. Anthony, St. Anthony
Please come down
My precious jewellery box is lost
And can't be found
Dear St. Anthony, I pray
Bring it back, without delay.
My Jewellery box's lost and can't be found
Please, St. Anthony, look around.
(memorize it, shorten it if you want, and repeat it)

(In French I use this):
Saint Antoine de Padoue,
Vous qui retrouvez tout,
Aidez-moi à retrouver
La /le________ que j'ai égaré.

It works for me every time! It must relax my brain in a certain fashion so that suddenly, I get a flash in my head, Look there! And most of the time, there it is. Or I find it shortly after.

If you had a house sitter you probably stuck it somewhere where they would not find it either, but it must have been somewhere unusual. Your brain forgot about it for either 2 reasons:

1) It's either too well hidden and your subconscious is asleep, knowing no one -including you! - will find it;
2) It was placed somewhere where there was a risk to be thrown away if not recovered immediately, and your subconscious is protecting you from the truth because it would hurt too much. Like in the garbage, with food or in the laundry.

But 2 would be less likely if you had a sitter. I hope this helps you.

I am another of those annoying people that never loses anything because I take care to put things where they go. But I lost the diamond out of my engagement ring a few years ago when ten pin bowling. Luckily I realised when we were still at the bowling alley and I had everyone playing on our lane crawling around on the floor looking for it. And I found it! Under the ball return. I didn't get it fixed for two years because I was too scared to wear it in case the diamond fell out again. But eventually I got it fixed and they told me that the setting was faulty and there's no way it should have fallen out, so now I'm happy to wear it.

I took the ribbon belt off a dress to wash it then when I went to wear it again I couldn't find the belt. I knew I'd put it away "somewhere safe". I tore my dressing room apart looking for it and found it tucked in between two unopened pairs of tights in a drawer.

The only thing I can recall losing and never finding is a pair of sunglasses. I was sure they were in my car somewhere but even crawling around with a torch didn't reveal them. That car is long gone now so the sunglasses are too I guess

This just reminded me that I also lost a really nice 18K gold necklace I'd ordered with an adjustable tension bead clasp... it could be *any* length. Sigh... I have pretty bad metal allergies so sometimes I'd have to take it off part way through the day. Could have sworn I put it in my purse, but it disappeared. Still unhappy with myself now.

I am missing a small-ish black velvet 'travel' jewelry box. Last fall, in preparation for a European cruise (first time I've gone on a cruise in Europe), I decided not to take the black box and tucked it away - somewhere in the house. For the cruise I packed some inexpensive costume jewelry into an old makeup bag.

The problem is that the black velvet box contains a pair of beautiful gold and pearl earrings that my Mom had specially made for me, and I haven't even had the chance to wear them yet. I really love those earrings and was so pleased to receive them - but they're in that travel box which I can't find!!! There is also a beautiful necklace in there that my husband gave me for an anniversary present *last year* (anniversary is March 27th).

Very distressing. I shoved that box somewhere weird, because I'd arranged for a house-sitter/ dog-sitter, and I figured it wasn't a good idea to take any good jewelry with me on my trip. Normally, I'd have put that box into my night table drawer, but since I had someone staying at my house - I stuck it somewhere else, and I don't know where it is :(

I have to find it - meeting up with Mom at the end of May, and I'm sure she's going to wonder why I'm not wearing the beautiful earrings she had made for me, and my husband is sure to be wondering why I haven't worn that necklace he got me last year ....GAH.

I don't lose things too often but I have left a scarf on the bus, misplaced various bits of clothing which have turned up stuffed behind drawers and the like, and recently had a rather large and heavy earring fall out of my earlobe at a conference. No idea how it came loose but fortunately someone found it and turned it in. My Mom once managed to knock the diamond out of her wedding ring while helping me carry some furniture into my old apartment. I wouldn't let her leave until I had combed the staircase and finally found it!

I have a big turquoise ring I got from my Mom that has an interesting history. She lost it at a summer vacation cabin when she was a teenager, and found it again when the family went back to the same place a few years later!
Oh yes! I lose things all of the time - usually on my very messy desk at work!

But as for wardrobe items.... I "misplaced" my favorite black purse for over a year - I even wrote a response about it in a thread by Ingunn last summer. I found it about a month ago shoved in the bottom of a wardrobe with a bunch of other purses. I cannot even remember why I put it there! Shocking.

I've also lost one of the diamond earrings my husband gave me on my wedding day. All I remember is that I was staying after school to supervise an event and I had been on the phone with a parent for a very long time - somewhere between the phone call and dinner at the event that earring went missing. The school custodians even combed the garbage looking for it! This was 1.5 years ago and I still haven't told my husband - I feel too guilty about it. I'm hoping that because I found my black purse, I'll eventually find my earring. Fingers crossed!

I cannot find one of my two black bras. I cannot imagine where did it go!
I am not even counting how many orphan socks I have in my drawer! Actually at least for those I know where they go - I have caught my kitty fishing them out of the drawer if there is at least a tiny crack left open and then drags them under the bed proud of his hunting skills. I am sure I will find a lot of dead socks under that bed one day...
Actually it gave me an idea: maybe my poor bra had the same fate - it was in the next drawer?
I'm also always losing things. And then I find them in the strangest places. Best story ever - when I was fourteen or so I lost one of my earrings, but I didn't know when or where. Two years later my little brother found it at the playground in our neighbourhood when he was building sandcastles. In the ground in that huge sandbox. What were the odds?
You all are so funny! I almost forgot that I wanted to wear my navy J Crew skirt the other morning and could. not. find. it. even though I KNEW there was only one place it could be, and that was hanging in the closet with its skirt friends. I looked and looked and LOOKED, and finally found it had fallen on the floor in all its crumpled-and-unwearable linen glory. I hate when that happens!
Julie - laughing so hard about Teah putting your DVD in the fridge. Silly mummy!!! Of course zumba goes in fridge!! Too hot to handle otherwise....

I lost (but did not find) the diamond to my mother's engagement ring.

I also lost a raincoat for two years. It turned up in a box of rugs that we had shipped back from Vancouver but had not opened because they did not fit in the new house....

Many of my socks are dancing with Shannon's at that sock hop.

I have also lost my gardening shoes under a chair in our back room. Shoved them under the chair skirt when someone stopped by, and forgot all about them until months later (sheepish grin) I moved the chair to vacuum.

Oh, yes and yes. Lost a handbag and sweater for months. Somehow they ad been folded into a seldom used quilt and when I got it out, they fell out. Obviously, the quilt wasn't folded as much as it was "wadded up" ( used during one of my daughter's sleepovers). I don't think teens have the time to make actual folds.
And I have left so many gloves all over Seattle that I now buy the same kind of inexpensive black knit pair and just keep matching up the orphans.
That's hilarious RoseandJoan!
I almost lost my wedding set one day. I had put it in the indent of the door armrest in our truck while I put hand lotion on. My husband pulled into the carwash and while he was washing the truck, I got out (I don't know why). As we drove home I reached in to get my ring, it was gone! I searched frantically, then I panicked. We went back to the carwash and they were just pushing the mud into the drain and there in amongst the muck - my shiny gold ring!! I was so relieved I could have cried.
I'm a bit like Raisin in that I am an organized, everything in it's place person. However, I'm sure one day they will prove that cell phones have the ability to relocate themselves:-).
