Aww, thanks, everyone! I really did not intend for this thread to take this turn, but there it is. I did feel better after "talking" to you guys here, getting some hugs from my husband, getting some work done, and going for a nice 4-mile run around my chilly, beautiful city, admiring all the purple lights.

I finished packing tonight since I leave early in the morning, so I had no time to take pics of my travel outfits, but they are pretty much repeats of things you've seen that I feel good in.

I am looking forward to the reunion. Actually, my sister is more nervous about it than I am, but I figure we'll be there together, and we're all family, even if we don't know 80-90% of the others!

After the reunion, I fly to New Orleans for the Super Bowl! I'm not the biggest football fan in the world, but I gotta say it was quite a season for Baltimore, so I've caught a bit of Ravens fever. So we're really looking forward to New Orleans too.

Thank you all for the lovely words and thoughts, and for enduring my tangent-laden thread! You all are THE BEST!

Just wanted to send along a hug and best wishes for a wonderful meeting with your family members. I hope it goes beautifully, and although it's bringing up feelings of loss and pain, it might actually be a very happy and joyous occasion - to reconnect with people that you share a common bond with.

Meanwhile, I think you're very wise to clue into how deeper emotional issues can sometimes translate into feeling dissatisfied with some other thing (ie. feeling negative about one's body shape or what have you).

Thing is? You are just *fab* - I love your style and I think you look very beautiful, so please don't worry too much about feeling somewhat stuck in terms of body shape, versus some of the styles you'd like to wear. I'm almost 100% positive that Angie and the rest of the YLF'ers will find a way to make the latest and greatest styles work for every body shape. There are so many things I used to think I "couldn't" wear, and time and time again - YLF proves me wrong!

Hang in there Janet, and here's hoping you have a *wonderful* weekend - may it go well, and may it bring you all kinds of joy, even amidst the sadness. I hope you meet some great people, and feel a whole lot better about things.

You're so insightful, Janet, to realize the feelings were coming from something else! I hope you found some relief from it all with your run -- it always used to help me feel better too :-)

Your meeting new family members sounds like a great opportunity, and wouldn't it be wonderful if you see bits and pieces of your mom in them?

Remember to take good care of yourself with rest, exercise, nutrition to stay strong and feel strong. Every little bit we 'can' do to keep from feeling down helps. . .

Oh, Janet, I am so sorry about your mom. Good for you for getting to the bottom of your feelings, though that doesn't necessarily take away the apprehension or fear. I hope you have a wonderful time this weekend, and while I don't know anything about the surgery you need, I wish you the very best with that. I understand how scary it can be. And regarding your shape: It's perfect!

I used to complain ALL THE TIME about this quirky little body of mine and wish I was taller/thinner/bustier/prettier blah blah blah blah....

But the last year I've really figured out alot on how to dress my figure. Sure...I still whine from time to time about my mid section, or am drawn to an outfit that really suits someone who's over 5 feet tall, but that's becoming less and less all the time. I'm having fun with fashion and even though there are failures here and there, I'm still having a good time.

Let's be grateful for our strong and healthy bodies and those "quirks"? That's what makes us unique.

I need to apologize for my negativity. When I start feeling down on myself, I know it's time to look deeper at what's going on with me. When those old "I can't" or "I'm not" thoughts creep in, it's a signal.

I just gave myself a few moments to think about what's going on and surprised myself by dissolving into tears. I think it's a couple of things. This weekend I'm going to meet a few dozen (!) family members I've never met before -- all from my late mother's family. It's kicking up a lot of memories and feelings about her. Secondly, I'm having anxiety about a medical issue that will require surgery this spring. I'm scared, and again it comes back to missing my mom and wishing I could talk with her about it. So funny that no matter how old I am, when I'm frightened, I still want my mommy. :-(

So yeah, I think my problem is more my mind than my body. I'm going to go get some work done and take a nice brisk run, which always helps.

Thanks for letting me vent.

I think I've become much less strict about what I'm "supposed" to be wearing for my body type and more open to experimenting with a different silhouette now and then. For the most part I do dress for my shape, but I think it's ok to not dress for figure flattery once in awhile. For example, I would have never worn flat oxfords with a skirt a year ago - short stumpy legs here - but I do it every so often now and while my legs certainly look better with heels, I don't care. I rock it and love it and I can wear heels the next day.

I am just figuring out my shape, but I don't get frustrated with what I am shaped like, it's more being able to find clothes that work. It's feast or famine, I think!

But I am enjoying experimenting and coming up with outfits that make me happy. And I try to push myself out of my comfort zone every once in a while because I think that is important too.

Ummm, YES!!!!!

This is right in the same vein as the thread a few days ago about continually trying styles that don't work. I LOVE the styles that look good on long-legged triangles, but I'm a short-legged pear. (It's probably just another form of 'the grass is always greener', right?)

Some days I'm up to the challenge, some days I sacrifice figure flattery to wear what I love (or own, because I bought the darn unflattering item anyway!), and other days I just grumble and then scold myself with how my body IS fine, etc., etc., etc.

I agree with Sona and Beth Ann. It's not that I love my body shape, it has its challenges and all, but I have learned what flatters me the most and that makes me feel good, so why lament over what I will never have? It can be frustrating sometimes (see the recent thread on trying things repeatedly that just don't work for you) but overall I am pretty content when I put on my clothes.

Janet, I saw your comment yesterday - on the trendy bottoms post - and noticed your sullen mood. I wanted to fly out to Baltimore to set you straight!

In my mind, you are wrong about not being able to wear the new look roomier bottoms with your body type. In fact - you might find them more flattering than body-con skinnies! TRY THEM!!! Have fun with the process of singling out the silhouettes that look killer. They are there and it's my promise to you. Keep the waistband fairly high and showcase that flat tummy and small waist. Don't let the crotch point drop too much. PLUS you wear heels which will make you feel more grounded in the style.

And as far as your leather jacket question goes on the other thread, lets do it properly by assessing your leather jacket capsule. Photograph all your leather jackets and lets take it from there.

Chin up!!

:)

Yes, especially in the summer when all I want to wear is white tops, but my IT shape suits darker colors on top.

For the most part though, I find it more of a blessing that I'm understanding how to dress my shape. It's such a relief to know that dressing nicely is not a roll-of-the-dice type of luck.

Honestly, no. I would say I don't really get tired of dressing it, I actually wish I had more opportunity to dress up! I wear lounge wear most of the time at home with the kids, and a uniform to work. So I don't get to show off much in those few minutes where I drop off and pick up kids before and after work. And occasional mall trip is a chance to get dressed, or a meal out. As for dressing my body shape, I really try to be happy with what I have. I'm not always even sure what I have, but I try not to feel like my body needs to change. What I do get frustrated by is not being able to find clothes that fit, but I like to think that's more about the clothes, than me (haha)

I guess I feel like I don't dress my body type, but my individual body. Categories can be helpful, but I think each body is unique. I also remind myself that clothing manufacturers want my money. It's their job to make me look good -- not MY job to make their clothing look good!

I dont get tired of dressing for my shape. Figure flattery is an important component of my style. My challenge is dressing my height. I'm 4'11. The petite depts in Cleveland are geared toward office wear. I dont think the slouchy stuff that is in style right now looks good on me at all.

All the time! I wish I didn't have to work around my hips. I wish I didn't have to work so hard to find things that fit.

I feel like my shape distates my style rather than my preferences. I love the look I see on a lot of slim rectangles. I will never be a slim rectangle again in my life. So, I try to dress the body I am in.

I'm glad I'm not alone. Don't get me wrong, I count my blessings every single day, and I don't want to seem ungrateful for the assets I do have.

Stacey, you said something that resonated with me. I feel like my body type hinders the style I would like to have. A lot of my aspirational style looks good on thin bodies with fewer curves. Some things I love on others look absolutely awful on me and it can be discouraging. Sometimes i just feel like my options are so limited when it comes to what is flattering. Ah well, I suppose it's all a balancing act. We *all* have fit and flattery challenges when it comes to seeking our aspirational style!

Again, not so much tired of it as some days, plain could not care less about conventional figure flattery.

If I think hard about it, my rounded rectangle body that's also wide and, uh, low-slung(?) is precisely the wrong shape to wear some of the most iconic ethnic garments in my culture --- including the most typical/popular drape of the saree. But I'll be hanged before I quit wearing one! I started when I was a very different shape at oh, 6 months or so, and will NOT stop now.

Do I sometimes give it enough thought to modify the drape or the patterns and colours I choose? Heck, yes. But there are times when I just choose what makes me happiest, and it may well not be the most flattering idea --- and I'm fine with that, as I'll still be smiling at some of these in the mirror.

Which is not to say figure flattery notions don't have important things to teach me for days when I'm not feeling so happy-go-lucky. Those are for the days when external impressions matter a bit more, internal resonance a little less --- the 'dress to impress' days if you will; and for experimental days when trying something new...

YES. I get so sick of working around my hips and thighs. As a pear, I know I'd have an easier time wearing skirts and dresses. But I just can't force myself to wear them all the time, flattering as they might be, because they feel sooo restricting to me. (And, I'm really a casual girl at heart.) Yet finding cute pants is a struggle, especially with current trends favoring skinny jeans, cigarette pants, etc. I feel like I have trouble pulling off trendy clothing in general. There is something about my overall look, or maybe personality, that comes across as restrained and not quite cool enough.

You know how Angie wants us to have fun with fashion? I really struggle with that concept.
