I never really got into trends, so I don't feel upset or angry about them coming back. I admit I feel a bit disdainful, when I see young people wearing stuff that I've seen on very out-of-date people for years. Disdainful, or maybe just it's jarring to see it being worn as if it's new.

"My" fashion is 1930s and 40s fashion. Most of the time widespread repro and rockabilly and pinup use doesn't bother me; it's a different subset of the whole vintage-look group.

I *laughed* when platforms came back the first time as "1970s" retro. Joke's on them, the 1970s were retro 1930s/40s! Truly, nothing is new.

The only thing that makes me "angry" is seeing beautiful vintage-style shoes with a modern heel slapped on. And that's just because I adore the whole look of those shoes, and the "wrong" heel spoils the aesthetic I'm going for. At least there are good reproduction shoe manufacturers.

I love it - it gives me opportunities to remember fondly, or have a laugh, or just be glad that something I was involved with can find new relevance again.

With all due respect to those with an opposing opinion and not to get too serious about it, I tend to be a little skeptical of being too possessive about how one's generation did the "real" version of things ... I'm reminded of my high school friend who scoffed at electronic music like Depeche Mode because it used technology and wasn't "pure" like acoustic guitar ... I found myself wondering, did medieval people roll their eyes at the early guitars because they were too technological ... whatever happened to the good old days of the lyre, now that was REAL music lol There are the rare super-geniuses perhaps, but for the most part, human knowledge is a bit too intertwined for anyone to claim complete possession and originality imho ... and as in life, so in fashion.

Whew, that was a good brain workout for a Monday morning!

Jessi, I know what you mean. A few years back, I saw a young person wearing the very Siouxsie & the Banshees tee that I have from when I saw them in ‘85. Mine is packed away in a container in the basement with a bunch of other vintage concert tees. But hers was probably from Hot Topic or something. Sigh. I had a moment of mixed feelings — one one hand a little envy that kids now have so much style and music from all eras and parts of the world at their fingertips, while we had to go searching for this stuff when I was young. But I am glad I grew up when I did — we had to work to find the cool stuff and probably appreciated it all the more for the effort we had to make.

It makes me a little irritated to see how easily one can BUY everything these days. As in, all kinds of crazy trendy stuff is in stores and it’s super cheap too. When I was younger, fashion took a lot more work— stores had only very basic, boring stuff, and so we had to make things or dig for vintage finds- you couldn’t just go to target and buy it.

I have no idea why this would piss me off. Guess I’m an old grump, shaking my fist and saying “kids have it so easy these days!”

I've never got angry either, more nostalgic, and I think it's to do with partly mourning my lost youth! From age 15 when I was allowed to choose my own clothes I have liked many of them and remember the happiness of those times eg my very 80s Princess Diana-like wedding dress.

Interesting to think about. The return of trends from the '80s and early '90s makes me deeply nostalgic more than anything. They're the fads I participated in, enjoyed and even "understood" -- as strange as some of them were. But for most of my adulthood, I've avoided trends, finding them impossible to keep up with and often uncomfortable in a "this isn't me" kind of way. By the time I come around to a few of them, the rest of the world has moved on.

Ok. Don’t like the Ramones being used in the Peleton commercial either... so far, I guess I’m all about the music... but it’s part and parcel to me.

On the other hand, I like bell bottoms the second time around, but didn’t the first.

...I’m actually quite surprised more peeps don’t find rehashing more irritating.

I can imagine feeling a certain sense of nostalgia seeing trends repeat. I was too clueless to notice trends when I was younger, but can get very emotional about certain songs. I firmly believe - with Jussie and Solomon - that there is nothing new under the sun.

I'm another one in the amused camp. I think it's interesting to see the trends come around again and see how the younger generation wears them. I felt kind of goofy in those clothes in the eighties (I was a teen in the eighties), so I'm curious to see what will be embraced and what will be rejected.

Whenever I have a strong reaction to something fashion-wise, it's usually because there is something more going on than just what is on the surface. I used to get genuinely angry about flared pants and jeans. Those were for the seventies, so why is everyone wearing them now? I realized that it had to do with being a young child in the seventies and having to wear hand-me-downs that were really ugly, many of them with that silhouette. Some forum members convinced me to try bootcuts because they were in line with my overall style, and trying them out made me change my mind about them. Now I don't mind them one bit and actually enjoy wearing them every now and then.

Another amused/bemused here. I think Suz, as usual, has nailed the heart of the discomfort we sometimes feel when the “youngsters” blithely appropriate something we feel belongs to our generation without the slightest interest in acknowledging its precedents. But then, I remind myself that my generation in the sixties didn’t invent miniskirts, jeans, or over-the-knee boots, nor did the eighties invent big hair, or the late eighties/nineties invent plaid shirts and Converse footwear.

That’s the interesting thing about fashion—every group of young ‘uns gets to pick and choose from what has gone before to figure out what is THE look at that moment in time. And does so with the conviction that look, idea, or whatever was born with them. Infuriating, but also amusing.

Since you mention that you're ordinarily amused by this, it does sound as if something specific is going on for you here. Maybe this period of fashion feels very tied to your identity and it feels disrespectful for others to "toy" with it, or maybe you look back at yourself wearing those things and think how silly and wonder why anyone else would subject themselves to it. Or maybe it's a question of regretting lost youth? (I don't mean to psychoanalyze here, by the way -- just throwing out ideas to consider -- you know your own feelings best!)

I tend to fall into the amused or bemused camps. I do like the return of high waists but I don't think I'll be wearing true crop tops this time round. ;)

I'm also in the amused and sometimes delighted camp! I was a teen in the 80s and early 90s. When I see some teens now wearing extremely high-waisted tapered jeans with cropped tops, it makes me laugh (but I'm not going there myself--those were uncomfortable!). And I am happy that my beloved bootcuts and flares from the early aughts are coming back too.

Put me in the “amused” camp. Even more amusing that they think it’s original and of their own idea or making- lol.
SF- Right!? I loved that movie and its sequel ( talk about coming back around;-) I find even TV shows, game shows and movies keep coming back as remakes too. I never think they are as good. Best to let some things be and watch the old ones in reruns. Then you laugh at 50-60’s plot lines and filming techniques.

I'm amused, too, not angry. My mum told me it would happen, lol! Very glad I can pick and choose which trends to take up again.

No Never! I live near a university and it makes me happy to see Uni students wearing similar clothing to what I wore at a similar age. I enjoy seeing what trends they pick and chose because each generation will put their own spin on fashion. I see the late teens as a great time to experiment and find your own voice and tribe, fashion is part of finding that identity.

What’s that old saying- “there is nothing new under the sun” ie no ideas are truly original, they’re built from previous ideas. Does it annoy me? No but it does make me feel slightly silly for buying (literally) into it all.

Amused, yes. Angry, no. It is interesting what memories the revised trends invoke. Usually humorous memories, especially the 80s big hair :). Having gone through some of the trends once it has become easier to say no this time around.

No, it does not bother me at all. Fashion is always borrowing from other eras. In the sixties, the dresses were seen as all new but they were influenced by other eras. There is a scene from the movie "To Sir, with Love" when the teacher takes the students to the museum to show them this. Of course, I remember that scene.

Well, I do remember when my dd was 8 or something and she tried to tell me rap was her generation’s music and I said, ‘Girl that’s my generation selling you that stuff.’ Lol. I *was* simply full of disdain on that one...
