I really like Kate's advice and am following a similar path just earlier in the process. I do not currently love everything I have. I figure this will take me a year of reading YLF and I'm about 6 months in. So far I have learned that I should only have one wardrobe base. I previously had a brown based and black based wardrobe. I have purged all earth tone colors. (except one bag and one pair of shoes) This is helping as I had new purchases to not end up with two mini wardrobes again. Now when I look at a piece, I decide right away if it is warm or cool toned and if it would go with all my grays, blues and blacks or just browns and tans (if it is the later I do not purchase it).

I started buying and returning a lot more. I try to complete and outfit with a new item before I cut the tags off to prevent a wardrobe orphan. Previously I would cut off the tags upon arrival at home and worry about how and what to wear it with for another time.

I am hangar flipping my closet each month. This let's me see what I wear in a month and things that I do not require serious consideration. I go on a monthly basis since I live in a 4 season climate. Eventually I plan to have all 4 seasons in one closet.

satisfied--no! satisfied enough to syc--yes.

kate--i admire your resolve to wear everything twice. i started a similar project deliberately wearing orphans. i've worn 3 orphans last worn from 6-16 years ago. i have many many more to adopt or release into the world.

kari--i'm sold on the quality over quantity, but with my ever changing body size and shape, things i love that are so well made no longer fit then become orphans. must.work.on.this.

I think I am pretty much there... the only problem now is that it is so much less fun to go shopping! Now that I can identify flattering pieces more easily, I find stuff I want but don't really need allll the time.

Anyway, my point is that it does happen, and it's worth the struggle.

Yes. I felt that way for a really long time. I also felt that I could handle any occasion but something in my closet would work. Not only did I feel I had enough, but that I had the "right" enough....

Right now I am feeling a little bland, but the good news is that I feel I only need a 3 or 4 key pieces to be content again. I think that is the beauty of having a "core basic" look that is quality and can last a while.

Kari I liked your comment about embracing quality over quantity - I think that has been my biggest problem is that I only go for cheap stuff so they either wear out, are a bad fit or I'm not quite happy with it but think it will do because it's cheap. I need to start widening my mindset that just because it's a good buy now may not mean that it will be good value for my wardrobe.

Kate I am taking note of every single thing you've written there, such great advice!

I also need to have a wardrobe purge, I know I have things in my closet that dont fit me so why am I still hanging onto them?!

Honestly I love just about everything I have, barring unexciting house-cleaning clothes and things of that nature. It just doesn't stop me from finding more things that I just have to have. I guess I actually find it really hard to spend money unless I really love something, even if it is a good deal. Or I bought enough good deals that I don't love to be cured of the illness.

Oh gee I hope that I do one day! It is such a frustrating process in some ways - because I'm impatient by nature (and a perfectionist - quite an awkward combo!) and want my wardrobe to be perfect right NOW. (Which, of course, it isn't!)

Oh well, one style step forward, one (hopefully smaller) one backwards. I think I'll get there one day....

I definitely don't love 80% of what I have, but I think I love 80% of what I've bought in the past 9 months (since joining YLF). And I'm at the point where I feel good about my wardrobe - there aren't any holes that I'm desperately scrambling to fill. I don't have any orphans. Everything goes with something, and I'm only keeping the items I actually wear. It's taken a lot of work, but I'm definitely feeling good about the progress I've made.

In case anyone wants the advice I have on how to get there:

- Commit to one or two color schemes. Not everything has to match, but it really helps when your closet isn't a complete mix of colors, shades, and intensities. I stick to an autumn palette, and then have allowed some pieces that "go" but don't match to stay because I can make them work. Happiness is not a wardrobe with each and every color in a 120 pack of crayons.

- Track what you actually wear. Since August I've been (somewhat obsessively) keeping track of every item I own, and making sure that I wear everything twice. And three months in I'm STILL finding more items to purge. Some I couldn't even bring myself to actually wear once. Other I wore once and remembered why I never wore them. Some I wore once, and then just didn't want to wear again. And some I even wore twice, and then decided they just weren't worth the space to keep, even though they technically passed the test.

- Take note of what piece(s) you keep wishing you had to complete an outfit. I was opposed to denim pencil skirts until I realized I have a lot of outfits that I wanted to wear with skinny jeans, but it's too hot in AZ 8 months of the year for skinny jeans, and a denim pencil skirt was close enough to work with most of those outfits I wanted to make. Now it's a workhorse.

It gets better, but it takes work. Luckily, work can be fun!

I find that just as I get happy with my clothes the season changes and I'm back to square one! Hopefully after a year of YLF-ing I'll have a well assembled wardrobe and can then focus on getting more creative with dressing.

Something I found that helps for those times when you stand there and can't think of what to wear: on the days when you DO feel inspired and come up with several outfit ideas, jot them down and keep the list in your closet. Then on the days you can't come up with something you can look at the list and try one of those.

Or, something I'm thinking of setting up myself, put up a "mood board" in your closet and pin up outfits that inspire you that you'd like to emulate.

I'm finally starting to feel like that after a LONG period of frustration - and then I still have days where I stand in front of my closet and "can't find a thing to wear", and end up going back to my best-of-WIW pictures for ideas because I'm running out of time.

A while ago, I realized that in order to love most or all of my wardrobe, I had to ruthlessly purge my wardrobe of the pieces that I didn't like, or that don't fit, are are just "okay." I'm still learning to do that, or better yet, not to buy or hang on to "just okay" pieces in the first place!

I think it took a long time for me - years of watching What Not To Wear followed by two years of observing YouLookFab and other style blogs, and then later being active on the YLF forum, posting WIWs, and blogging on a very small scale - before I really started learning learn what style & fit are best for my wardrobe. I'm aiming to embrace quality (and often higher cost) over quantity and am trying very hard not to settle. I'm also learning to dress for MY body - the shape & size it is today - not the body that I wish I had.

I still have plenty of days when I get frustrated and feel like I'm frumpy and just not getting it. Then something clicks - whether it's being inspired by an outfit I see, or discovering an "orphan" in my wardrobe that I fell in love with all over again, or adding a new item to my closet - and I start to get inspired to try something fresh & new.

So... I guess this drawn-out response really means that it's a long, continuous learning process that never really feels "finished."

I think this may depend a bit on your style personality. If someone is super trendy they probably have a pretty high wardrobe item turnover rate compared to someone who is very classic. It's worth working at, though it kind of is a never ending journey. My goal is to get to the point where my wardrobe is full of pieces that flatter me, that can serve any dressing need that pops up, and allows me to continually experiment.
