Interesting question. I change into lounge wear when I get home from work and I know I'm not going to see anyone but family. On the weekends, even when I have no plans to see anyone but my family, I don't wear loungewear. I'll wear something comfy but presentable, like leggings and sweater, or shorts and tank. I still wear jewelry, but I keep it short and easy (no long pendants that can get in the way when cooking or cleaning).

RL as always, you and your an interesting observations. I found your comment a few posts ago about your grandparents house being multi generational and how you couldn't come out of your room unless you were capital D dressed very interesting. Here in Mexico many homes are multi generational. I haven't lived in one myself but I could see how this would be the norm. Also not sure where your grandparents house is, but climate could weigh in too. At least here sometimes you have to walk outside to get to other areas of the house so shoes and "real" clothes are more necessary. It actually makes me think about a house we saw this weekend, hacienda style, where the kids would need to leave their rooms and walk onto a covered walkway in order to get to our bedroom in the morning (they're our alarm clocks, haha, toddlers..). Anyway...I digress...

I have really loosened up in a bad way on this. I schlep around in my PJs sometimes until noon, cleaning the house, working, doing laundry - poor DH. I need to put more effort on getting dressed in the morning.

This is remarkably thought-provoking. Most of the time I do dress to be seen. (Except when sewing mockups or something and I spend the afternoon in stays!) But I am totally alone in my home, and pretty much no one ever comes to the door.

Yesterday after church, I spent a long afternoon and evening of sewing on the family room floor. It was borderline warm with a strong cool wind. I opened the windows, but wore leggings and (matching) t-shirt and socks, with a (matching) cardigan when I got extra chilly. It was definitely not an outfit to step outside in, except in the backyard. And perfect for sitting cross-legged on the floor for hours.

But it's rare that I have a whole day without going anywhere, so to some degree, I dress to be seen. Even in summer, when it's a t-shirt and athletic skort, I coordinate small jewelry and footwear and wear makeup.

I may be unconventional on what constitutes "casual" and "smart" clothing. Saturday I had shopping and errands, so I wore a navy Buzz Lightyear t-shirt, chambray skirt, black belt, and black/blue sneakers. After errands, I ended up at my brother's house, helping him lay out a flagstone patio and build a retaining wall. It was all perfectly functional and comfortable. Buzz got a bit dusty, but nothing that a wash won't fix. I don't make a habit of wearing nice clothes for heavy labor, but skirts don't equal dressed up to me.

Good answer, Joy! Never thought about it quite like that - but a husband is indeed an old boyfriend. Lol.

Jules, that's an interesting point about armour and tribal identifiers. I'm not sure I'm ever without either of those... but I'm rarely coiffed. Hmm. Must think more on this.

Yes. Long ago I got the idea someplace that one should always dress they way you would want to look if an old boyfriend suddenly turned up...maybe even at your door handing out pamphlets. A thought I keep in mind ;) I suppose DH would qualify as an old boyfriend and he notices what I wear.

Comfort is king behind my closed doors. Anyone entering those doors, enters my zone. I'm usually decently dressed or I would not go to the door! ☺️ But when I leave the house, I definitely dress to express myself. I work in a small business in the office (few employees and not much foot traffic) so really when I dress for work I do dress for myself. Especially since the dress code is pretty casual and I can freely express my personal style (within reason!)

The armour comes off at home Rachy. I guess I dress to be seen or recognised as part of my 'tribe' when outside.

It is amazing the social clues we exude with clothing.

Always, unless I am sick or it's late at night. I rarely change clothes during the day unless I am going to a special event that requires more formal wear. Aprons are my friend. Lounge wear is after 10pm on at-home nights and gear is for the gym or sports.

I live alone, so at home it is definitely nice lounge wear -it needs to be soft and comfy but also put together. Evey thing else, even a quick errand, I dress in at lestnice casual outfit. Like Rabbit, I sometimes use those errands to experiment with things that are too fancy or too trendy/unusual for me workplace.

Yes. I spend a lot of time at home in lounge/activewear clothes and pajamas, but often need to pop out with the pup on short notice, which is why I've paid special attention to my loungewear capsule this past year.

This is all very interesting to me. It's pouring rain and I'm feeling my getup is a little too relaxed or something. On the other hand, I *am* prepared to go outside. What's interesting to me, you've made me all consider more... so here in the US, houses are immediate family for the most part. Parents and kids. I'd see my mum and dad wander into the kitchen in their pjs. They'd be dressed dressed during the day, but still... I mean, even when you move out and get roommates, I think that's the model and you'll get to see your roommates' pjs.

However, my grandparents house was built for more than a nuclear family unit. You were not allowed to come out of your room not capital D dressed. So, lol, I do not come out of my bedroom in anything I can't go to the post office in, just to be safe... without regard to the fact no one is around and the post office is something you only read about in history books.

However, I'm not Dressed. Somewhere in my head I think that means a pressed skirt and blouse, coat, pumps, and a little handbag...

I dress to be seen, even if its only me doing the 'seeing':) It makes me feel good to be dressed 'nicely'. Ofcourse if I am cleaning and doing housework I don't 'dress' but I will get dressed afterwards.

We also have people in and out of our home (church related meetings) so that's another reason that I like to be 'dressed' .

I try to look presentable at home. You never know when a neighbor will ring the doorbell. Mine do it with some frequency.

When I go out I like to dress kind of nice. Yesterday I went to Bed Bath and Beyond and unexpectedly ran into some ladies I knew. They were a generation older than me. They were all dressed nicely. They had been to lunch and then went to BBB. With my usual jeans, I was also wearing nice boots and a cute jacket. I wasn't embarassed by my outfit. I think this is my standard - not being embarassed by my outfit!

If I don't plan to go out, I still dress nicely, but it wouldn't be *as* nicely if I know I will be going out somewhere. If I'm going to stay home, it might just be jeans and a knit top. If I decide after the fact to do errands somewhere, I would probably add a pair of statement shoes if I could, depending on the weather.

I guess the short answer is, If I'm going out, even if it's just to run errands, I do want to wear at least one item (probably shoes) that would make me stand out. If I don't plan to go out at all, then I do not dress to stand out, although it's still plenty nice in case someone drops by.

Yes, I do. I am "seen" in public almost every day, because I work outside of the home and I am usually out doing errands, etc on weekends. And like Nancy, I live in Boston, which is definitely a walking city which means more opportunities to be seen.

I almost always wear loungewear at home, but that's partly because I have already gotten my "dressing up" fix for the day (and also partly because I am a messy cook/dishwasher and don't want to mess up my nice clothes). I also never wear shoes at home (except occasionally slippers) so not all my outfits would work anyway. On the rare day when I don't leave the house, I find it a luxury to spend all day in cozy loungewear. I suspect that would not be the case if staying at home all day were my norm.

For the record, when I spend all day at home, of course I see my husband. But to me, he isn't people. (This is a compliment, by the way. As an introvert, I have trouble dealing with people sometimes.)

Like many others, I never go a full day without anyone seeing me -- usually at least my kids and my husband do! Most days I go out and I dress for the task at hand. But the odd time I'm at home all day, I wear lounge wear. The key words are soft and loose. (Leggings are not lounge wear for me). I certainly don't wear anything fashionable. ;-)

Mind you, my hubs likes me in cozy sweaters or flannel pyjamas, because I look all "cuddly". :-)

While I try to look presentable enough to answer the door without embarrassment, I dress comfortably in loungewear at home. I dress to "be seen" when I am outside the house. My definition of "to be seen" is just different enough to be interesting, but not crazy-out-there-look-at-me-! "to be seen".

I could probably go either way, but I do live in the city so it's an occasion to be seen a lot, even if you go out to do your shopping (by foot, usually). I guess if I were driving everywhere, I'd be less visible. And yet, conversely, it's very very casual/hipster-y in this part of Boston, so you could definitely overdress here too. No one would care, but I might. I do like to put some effort into the relaxed-arty-cool vibe, I suppose. : )

Out in public? You bet - although not in terms of the Kardashian dressing to be seen system. At home if there is no one around and i'm alone - nah, it's whatever soft top and bottom are at hand. I will do my eyebrows though YOU NEVER KNOW - as the saying goes .

If I don't dress to be seen I will surely see someone who I don't want to see me looking like a slob. Happens every time.
That said I love comfort. At home it is tank top, yoga pants and a hoodie if cold. Ahhhh

When I'm home it's usually yoga pants, a tee and a hoodie or track jacket. I still care about how they fit though and want it to be coordinated.

It's rare that I'm truly alone. I'm almost always with someone either socially, in the community or I'm with a family member. I always like to feel pulled together. I would even say that my exercise gear and lounge wear are coordinated and and stylish. Probably the only time I'm not is when I'm sick.

I dress to be seen at home, too. DH pays attention to what I'm wearing and I like that.
