I only discard when I purchase if I've found a new item to explicitly replace an old one (either because something is on its last legs, or I find an item that suits me better than a similar one I already had--if it's the latter, I make sure the old one gets to a good second home, which usually ends up being my fiancee because we wear the same size tops and jackets and that's what gets changed out the most). I don't do it as I go as any kind of rule. I don't have a cap for how much I'm willing to own at once other than "Welp, I can't physically fit anything new in here without my closet becoming overcrowded."

I go through my clothes twice a year when I switch summer and winter items. I weed out stuff that doesn't fit, is worn out, or I don't think I'll ever wear again. My closet tends to stay around the same number of items even without being strict about 1 in -1 out.

I’m with Kari and Janet. No specific 1-in, 1-out plan, but I do have limited space/hangers so I need to assess if something has earned its place in the closet.

The only time I’m strict about 1-in 1-out is when I’m specifically buying a replacement. If I’m not, I can easily end up with multiples because I wasn’t quite ready to give up the original. (Yes,I know it makes no sense, but I’m good at rationalizing that the original still had a few more wears, so should stay longer....)

My approach is similar to Jenn's. I do two major edits per year (at seasonal changes) and do have a donate bag for items I don't plan to keep. I keep some items for many years and others wear out within a season...it all depends.

No one-in-one-out for me. Way too strict and literal for the way I shop and live. I generally do a review and purge when I do my seasonal closet switch. I also have kids who are outgrowing stuff constantly so there is always a donation bag at my house. I have a small home and fairly small closet, but I'm not buying a lot of clothes right now, only really to fill wardrobe holes, so things are well under control.
I am running out of room for footwear, so I may have to start thinking about those purchases in a one-in-one-out way, rather than "collecting" things I like as they come along. The goal being not to discard more but buy less. Thanks for the thought exercise.

I was under the impression ‘discard’ meant to trash, we all interpret it differently. In that case donating, yes I often do buy and donate clothing I feel I won’t wear or what doesn’t fit me, usually the same kind of clothing I just bought so as not to overload my closet with too many of the same top, pants, etc.. the only thing I never have too much of is accessories.

That's how I interpret discard too. I give away to friends and family, donate, make washing rags, etc. Very seldom do I trash items. The exception being the utterly dissapointing fast-fashion items I wasted money on this winter.

I'm with Kari and Janet. No strict policy, but I do tend to hang on to things I no longer wear so new purchases will at some point lead to a clear out to make space. I will never get rid of things that I might wear again though - they are currently assigned to a holding zone if I don't expect to wear them within say 6 months (meant to balance weight fluctuations and trends and preferences coming & going).

Oh and I’m interpreting “discard” not as in throw in the trash (I almost never do that unless something is truly destroyed), but to donate, give away, or sell. Some of my “discards” go to live at the ranch where they can get well and truly trashed.

I don’t automatically or strictly follow a one-in, one-out rule, but I have a set number of hangers and spaces in my closet, and I know when I am getting to the tipping point where things need to go in order to create some space.

For example... I pulled a bunch (probably 7-8) of semi-orphaned sweaters (all at least 3+years old) out of my stacks a few weeks ago and they are in a holding zone basket to see if I miss them after a rest. So far, I am not missing the old pieces, I’m liking how those shelves are working now with more space, and have not felt particularly inclined to add any more to that category. I bought several new sweaters this fall/winter, which I’m enjoying way more than the old ones. Probably a sign those old ones can go. So even though I didn’t have a strict “discard” policy in place, it’s definitely working out that way.

I find it very difficult to just toss things into the trash, I give items away when I can and consign and donate to thrift stores,
.This helps me to not but throw always clothes but keep to better items that someone else will want. Since YLF I have been trying to practice one in- one ( or two) out.

Nope. I have only so much room for my wardrobe, so when things start getting glutted, it's time to cull. So my size constraints keep my wardrobe where I need it to be, I think around 150 or so items.

Well rachylou's comment most resonated, but specifically I don't remove items when I bring new (to me) stuff in. As a section becomes overstuffed I take out all the items in that category and re-evaluate.

I adhere strictly to the in and out rule because my closet was out of control and thanks to following this blog for the past few years I have realized this. Mistakes happen and I have made many as well as many major life style changes all forcing a reevaluation. And, after yesterdays post about the "long loved" pieces I realized I have further to go; too many things that don't get worn or fit my current life. I'm a regular contributor to the "second life" store for my clothes and over beating myself up because of the mistakes.

No. I do seasonal edits of my closet. After a season - to remove worn out pieces and before the start of a season - to check the fit and my general style direction. I buy new clothes regardless of a season and would have new stuff to combine with the rest. It’s a good point to reassess.

I've never had a strict policy regarding ins and outs. I know my shopping habits well enough to know that I have certain categories I struggle to keep up with (jeans!) and others that can become bloated easily (button-front shirts!). I find keeping a Do Not Buy list is my most helpful tool in preventing overbuying. As long as I'm adding the things I need, not just the stuff I like, my numbers usually balance out to where I want them.

I have tried the minimalist thing, a couple of times. Both in my wardrobe and elsewhere in the house. Discarding heaps of stuff. Somehow the stuff comes sneaking back in!! My wardrobe is bigger than ever now, and I remember clearing out LOADS a couple of years ago. A little scary actually...

I get rid of items when I am done with them. Usually because the item is showing wear or has shrunk, occasionally because I am just over it. Purchases only directly lead to items being eliminated if they are replacements.

Not per se. I tend to discard several things at once, whether to consign or donate. But my wardrobe stays well within the confines of my dresser and little closet no matter what.

I don't do one in one out, because I think it would lead me to hold on to pieces that I didn't like/wasn't really wearing in order to have something I was willing to discard if I wanted to buy something new!

Better to get rid of the things that don't suit and see clearly what I really have.

I do have a few pieces that are such important wardrobe glue that I am holding on to imperfect or worn versions until I can find a suitable replacement. When I do, I'll be happy to make a one for one swap.

In a way, yes. I don’t discard BECAUSE I purchase, but when I find I’m running out of storage space in drawers or hangers I have to make a decision. No new storage. I find I’m prone to hanging on to things that I’m not ready to pass on yet even though I haven’t worn them in over a year. When I am pressed to make a decision about what stays those “on the fence” items have to go. I usually can find folks in my local Buy Nothing community who love to take on secondhand clothes.

I am thinking of one top in particular, turquoise and ruched sleeves with little dachshunds on it. It’s not my style now but the dogs look so much like my Lucy although a different breed. I figure I’ll keep it for a while and see if I wear it around the house for loungewear. If not, I’ll pass it on.

For this year, my wardrobe doesn’t have holes. I don’t need more other than replacing an activewear rain jacket that I lost, and likely one more pair of running shoes as an older pair wears out. So I’ll be taking a one in one out approach where I don’t consider buying until something is ready to exit the wardrobe- for example, if my tall black Clarks boots from around 2012-ish wore out, that’s a hole that would need replacing. Or I’m on the lookout if I have an older wardrobe workhorse that is starting to show its age.

I don’t discard BECAUSE I purchase, but I also try to avoid bringing something(s) in and ending up with a bloated closet. That paranoia comes from spending the last two years adjusting to a new lifestyle in a new climate and feeling my wardrobe wasn’t fitting with either. I am better about regular edits, and discard things that have worn out or no longer fit.

If something becomes worn out or unwearable (and can’t be repaired) I discard it right away. Once a year, in the fall, I do a review - touching everything - and editing things that are shabby, worn, or just not working for me. The fall review usually results in a list of items (wardrobe holes) and I shop from the list over the course of the next year. Sometimes I acquire a spontaneous purchase, but I don’t necessarily discard something because I’ve acquired something new. I maintain a small closet - 50+ garments and 30+ other items like shoes, bags, hats, gloves, etc. Not counting underwear or sports kit.

January 2019 I had 64 items and in January 2020 I counted 86 items. I acquired 35 new (or thrifted) items over the course of 2019, and discarded 13. A charitable organization comes to my house 4 times a year to collect anything I wish to donate, so I pass along things that still have some use (like a black puffer that made me sad) but I throw away some things, like sneakers with holes.
