I cut off the extra buttons and keep them in a zip bag along with extra yarn that comes with knitwear. Like others have mentioned the bag is stuffed and likely contains buttons/yarn for items I probably no longer have.

Hmm Diana, I wonder why men get unobstrusive extra button placement but we don't? It's not like a button sewn onto the end of a double placket or inside of a pocket would be in the way of anything!

Wow, Cindy, great idea! Love that you keep track "stories" of your clothing items! I don't but some of mines also have their stories, and would be fine, to jot them down for their fun evidence:-).

Yes I cut, but I'm a die-hard button saver like my seamstress mom was. You should see my collection, lol. But hey, when I need a button, I have one.

I keep them on, unless they are in a bad spot. I like to have the extra buttons with the corresponding garments, that makes things easier for me.

I like when they're sewn unobtrusively onto a pocket lining or inside hem or something like that (or like on men's shirts at the bottom of the placket)and will leave those, but I Will remove the ones that are on annoying dangly tags or awkward places.

If I can leave them on I do. On coats if they are on a tag, I leave them in the pocket and try and be careful not to lose them. I love when they are sewn on same reason, don't lose them!!

If the tag is scratchy/itchy/otherwise annoying, off it goes. If the buttons are big, off they go. If it's a soft tag with small buttons, it can stay.

As for extra buttons in general, and extra yarn for repairing sweaters: i generally try to keep extra buttons with the hang tags, all in one little container in my crafting supplies storage area. I'll staple the little ziploc bag of buttons/thread to the designer's swing tags if the garment came with one; for stuff that only has a price tag, I'll staple the button bag to that. Then I put them in my little bag that is dedicated to holding my spare buttons. I go through that bag anytime I do a wardrobe edit and eliminate the ones that belong to garments that are leaving my possession.

I've kind of gotten tired of digging through a bag to find buttons (even though it really isn't a big bag), and I've commissioned a "wardrobe junk journal" from a friend who's into scrapbooking. I asked for full size pages with pockets so I can put pics of items and make notes and store extra buttons. I asked for room to make notes because some items just have a great story. I guess it's my version of the spreadsheets that so many of you guys keep to track your spending and cost-per-wear.

Thanx for asking, maybe retailers will read our suggestions!
As per Rachy said, "my extra button bins are out of control"-so recently decided I'll not even bother anymore...BUT

I would love to keep the spare buttons on the clothing itself if possible because buttons are the most safe left there for when needed-just they are sewing them on the end of a weirdly long tag, which still gets cut by me before first use. I always wondered, why they're not sewing them close to the base of the tag, as close possible to the closset seam, actually-the button then can't be seen and felt so obviously, so then, I would leave the label(&the button) on:-).

I'm with you Staysfit. I have all sorts of cute buttons that went with kids clothes that I long since donated. My Mum had a button tin that my girls used to love to play with when they were little. Unfortunately after Mum died Dad got rid of it without asking me ( he did that with a lot of stuff.) Those cute buttons I kept can be the basis of my own button tin for future grandchildren!

Thinking about this, maybe I should sew all those pesky buttons sitting in my button box onto the corresponding item their if I can figure it out! My button box is stuffed to the gills, and who tosses the button when they bin their garment?

I don't cut mine off. I like to leave them there because they'll be there when I need them. Also, if I decide to sell the piece on consignment later, they are there for the new owner.

(Inspired by both rachylou & harmonica (& Gaylene!))

Do you cut off the extra buttons on labels? You know, the ones they supply in case the current buttons on your garment fall off?

I don't usually cut those off because they're usually somewhere unobtrusive, like on the hip. Are you supposed to, though? (Personally, I'd know I'd probably lose them if they weren't still attached to their coordinating piece of clothing, haha!)
