We do it ourselves - have a robo-vac that helps some but I still vacuum regularly, plus we have stairs that have to be cleaned. We have a double sink with a low middle and plenty of room on both sides. I use stainless utensil containers inside one side of the sink to put rinsed utensils. There is also a stainless drain rack in the bottom so I can stack plates on their sides. We do have a dishwasher but that's for larger loads. We cook often 3 meals a day so a lot of kitchen use. It's dusty here so it would be nice to have someone come in a do dusting from top to bottom and mopping and do the bathrooms thoroughly. I keep thinking I should get someone but I don't really want a weekly commitment and it's hard to find someone for just twice a month. Now I feel like I need to stop working and go clean something!

I do it all by myself.

Bathrooms are done weekly from top to bottom. Floors are vacuumed/swiffered every 2-3 weeks and mopped monthly (we have no pets and do not wear shoes in the house so there's not much dirt or dust.) Furniture and countertops are dusted/wiped down every two weeks and as needed, including sideboards and closets.

Every quarter I do a deep clean (pull out a ladder and dust ceiling fans, pictures/paintings, railings, sideboards, light fixtures, furniture oil the wood, condition leather furniture, etc). I also use that time to go through everything and eliminate any clutter (ie junk drawers, etc).

We have a large home and a decent size yard. We have a lawn service every week to mow. My husband keeps up with the weeding and trimming pretty much. I clean the house , cook and do all the laundry. Its a lot as we have a 3500sq ft home with 4 full bathrooms and a finished basement . The basement only gets used now during NFL season so I actually cleaned it today ! I have tried cleaning services but have always been disappointed and I'm certainly not a perfectionist . We also have a small cottage on the St Lawrence River at the mouth of Lake Ontario which I clean. It's pretty small but does seem to accumulate a lot of spider webs overnight! I don't mind cleaning the cottage but I'm not going to lie the other house is hard to keep up with.

I have someone clean once a week. She alternates full days one week with half days the next. Neither is not enough time to do the entire house, but it helps reduce the cleaning load so DH and I can do the rest.

Our kitchen is not large given the size of our house, but it has a functional layout with two sinks, three if you count the bar sink near the dining room. It’s designed for multiple cooks and it works well. I thank my late stepfather, a homebuilder, and owner of a kitchen and bath design business for this. He suggested a book called Kitchen design with cooking in mind when I was building my house. The book has great information and includes various layouts using two sinks in the kitchen.

We do all of our cleaning. I do the laundry and clean the bedrooms, baths, hall, and laundry room. DH shops and cooks and cleans the kitchen, living room, and his office. I do most of our small yard and he does all of the painting and repairs. It works out for us.

We do it ourselves, yes, though in the past (in Ontario) we had a twice a month cleaning person. This house is a little easier to deal with than that one was (fewer stairs) and we manage, Mr. Suz and I are tidy. Our kid is NOT but they live in their own flat in the house, thank goodness. :) We don't really have a set schedule but we get it done.

I have someone cut our grass -- I am slightly allergic and I loathe the job. I do the rest of the outdoor work but find it taxing -- it's too much for me. Something I am working on and considering for the future. No big property once the kiddo is gone.

After we had been in this house for a couple of years(2700sf, moving from a 800sf house!), my husband talked me into having someone come and clean for us every two weeks. After one or two not-great services, we found out the guy who did some yard work for us has a wife who cleans. Seventeen years later, she still cleans for us! I don’t know what we would do without her, she’s great.

In between, I clean and vacuum and declutter and straighten. I’m a neat freak. Hubs does most of the outdoor work. I do the bulk of the cooking and all of the laundry — I actually like doing laundry myself because it all gets folded and put away promptly that way.

Thanks for the comments, Eliza. I'm not familiar with drying stones, but am off to research right now. Yesterday I was so motivated to get my kitchen cleaned up after reading this thread that I emptied out my under-sink cupboard only to find water had been leaking from the connection on the sprayer/hose for who knows how long and everything was soaked. I'm done.

Lisa- I’m fond of a large single bowl deep sink and understand how preferences can vary. I haven’t tried this on a large scale (have a small one), but maybe others can weigh in on how a larger drying stone under your rack would work as a tray/fabric mat alternative. We process dishes as fast as possible here, but I tried the fabric mats and didn’t like that they were wet within a minute, yet didn’t really need daily washing, leaving a heavy wet thing that I didn’t want to fold up and store or hang in the kitchen. Probably has reinforced our dishes are put away as part of clean up routine.

I do my own cleaning. DH helps as requested (moves furniture so I can vacuum behind large pieces), washes the pots after I load the dishes into the dishwasher, all outside yard work. We split laundry duties. Adult children still living at home are responsible for cleaning their bathroom and their bedrooms and doing their own laundry. They clean up their own cooking projects/meals.

I take the approach to clean as I go and avoid making messes in the first place. We are a shoeless household which helps. But my house is on the larger size and it’s getting harder to keep up with a lot of things. For the first time ever, I am considering hiring a cleaning service for maybe quarterly deep cleaning. We are planning some big renovations this year and I might start with a post-construction professional cleaning to test a company out.

We have a weekly cleaning lady who is here for a half day. But we cook almost every night so there is a lot of in-between kitchen cleaning! I clean, tidy, and "close" the kitchen every night before bed, and Hubby unloads the dishwasher and takes care of the breakfast dishes every morning. And we are pretty good about keeping things generally tidy.

We had (lovely!) house guests recently so I took that opportunity to do some much-needed shoveling out of the guest room, guest bath, and pantry. Cleared out the closet and a lot of cluttered drawers.

Hubby and I each do our own laundry and we also have the dry cleaners pick up and deliver every other week. (mostly it's washing and pressing these days rather than actual dry cleaning)

I use a padded thing that is specifically for dish drying . I've tried a rack/tray, a pad with a built-in mini rack , anything I could find at HomeSense. The folding pad and utensil holder seems to work the best, even though it means it's out on the counter ALL THE TIME. Putting it away is not practical and just an extra thing to fuss over. I have such limited counter space too. Can you tell I hate my kitchen?

Lisa - large single sink here and I love it, but I agree that the random dishes drying on the counter is unattractive. I try to dry them fairly quickly and put them away but there are usually some out. I would love to have something that looks nice for them to dry on but have yet to find that.

We have a large house and two outbuildings - which is lovely but a lot to maintain. So yes, we have help. Actually one duo who comes weekly for the main house, top 3 floors only, and one solo person who comes as needed for everything else. We rely on them, value their work, and never fail to express our appreciation. Don't even get me started on the number of different work crews who Mr. A manages for the outside meadows, orchard, and pool.

Oh for shopping we do one big monthly shop, but in between I'll get veggies from the farm and bake sourdough, and DH does any little grocery store fill ins.

I cleaned our small condo for decades. I did all the laundry, almost all the cooking and all the bill paying. When we retired to an area with lower housing costs we upsized! (We call it our 10 year home) I continued with most of the cleaning, all of the laundry and all of the bill paying. My husband discovered cooking and grocery shopping and has taken on the lion's share of that chore. Seven years later, (seven year older) and facing a surgery that will put me out of commission for the last few months of the year, I decided to hire cleaners. They come twice a month and do a thorough bath/kitchen/flooring cleaning. It took a few visits for us to work out what they are doing, use of products, etc. I still do the bathrooms, kitchen, dusting and some light vacuuming on the weeks they are not here. I still do all the laundry and the ironing but am teaching my husband how to budget and pay the bills. I though that I might let them go in the new year - but I so enjoy having a clean home that I didn't have to clean!

Great topic.
I did every bit of my own cleaning - and it was a lot of cleaning, since I was raised by a mother who still obsessively cleans - until my kids were about 7 and 10. Plus I had a full time job that involved 30% travel, as the primary income in our family. I was so exhausted on weekends when I had time for the heavy cleaning, and it made me increasingly resentful and angry.
We have had cleaning help every 2 weeks since then. I still clean lightly every day in between - vacuuming litter and cat hair daily, laundry daily, wash mirrors, counters, sinks, stovetops, windows. On the off week I wash floors, and clean the screened porch which is used daily by the cats. I wash and iron our sheets and change our bed even on the week the cleaner is here.
I really appreciate the help for bathroom deep cleaning, particularly if we've had guests and more than only our bathroom has been used. I miss the help if our cleaner cannot come. I realize it is a luxury, and I appreciate it so much.
Our cleaner says we have the cleanest house she works on, and we discuss the virtues of Shark vacuums regularly!
My husband will help inside when I ask, and he does all of the home repair work and lawn care. He was also an at-home Dad for many years which kept him hopping.
As I approach retiring in a year or so,we are evaluating how, where, and when to down/right size for all the reasons. (It's not so easy though....I totally see how people get stuck in their lifetime houses for far too long).

Lisa, we had a double sink but replaced it with a single sink. It used to be hard to wash big sheet pans and pasta pots, but now it’s a breeze, especially with the tall faucet.

Re dishes in the sink: never! I always run the dishwasher after a meal. As for drying things, I don’t. It’s so dry here that everything dries quickly in the dish rack next to the sink, or on the cooktop.

We’re only 3 people but there is a lot of meal prep and cooking going on and it seems like we use a lot of dishes /lunch containers , etc . Washing by hand is one thing but then drying and putting away immediately is one step too many for me , lol. I miss my old double sink which held a dish drainer quite nicely .

LJP, me! I designed our kitchen with one sink instead of two :)
We have a small galley kitchen with limited counter space, so I wanted to maximize it. I handwash some dishes and dry them on a towel but keep such dishes to a minimum. It is easy for two people and minimal amount of stuff.

I do most of the house cleaning (though my husband steams the floors) because he handles the outside and our finances. We had help when we both worked and our son was living at home, but it really isn’t necessary at this point.

Keeping my very small condo kitchen clean and tidy is the bane of my existence . Here’s a question for all of you : do you have one big sink or a double ? I went from a double sink to just one big sink and now there is nowhere to air dry dishes other than on a mat on the counter , which I hate ! Who designs kitchens without a double sink ?? And yes I have a dishwasher but don’t put everything in it . There are days when I’m ready to lose my mind over dishes in the sink because the dishwasher is either full and running or dry and no one has emptied it . Gah !

I do it now. We used to do it together - DH cleaned the floors and I dusted off and organized. Now he works full time and I don’t, I do it myself. We have separate bathrooms and each of us clean own bathroom on a weekly basis. I wash the windows and he does the yard work and takes care of garbage.
Cleaning services are expensive here, so it has never been in my budget. But I know a lot of people who use it including my own kids.

I clean our house. Some things get daily cleaning, some things get weekly cleaning, and some things get every other week cleaning. My only "hired" assistance is having the ceramic tile floor and grout professionally cleaned periodically. I tried doing it myself when I first moved into this home, because I had no experience with this type of flooring. I quickly learned it was worth it to hire it!

I'm Dutch. Love clean, neat and tidy everything!

We clean every day! Ironing too. Love beautifully pressed clothes

Doggies are bathed every week. Takes 10 mins. I do that ;)

And we have a cleaning crew come every fortnight who zips through in 40 mins.

We do it ourselves, and have always done so with a brief foray into paid cleaning help when our daughter was very little. We split the jobs fairly equally and it's done throughout the week, not just on the weekend.
