I go through spells of wearing fragrance. I keep forgetting about it lately. But yes, I have two main ones, Tom Ford Oud Wood for cool weather and Hermes Rhubarb Ecarlate for warm weather. I also have a tester of Frederic Malle Bigarade, which I really like and take with me on trips. I keep thinking I might buy it. It is more of a warm-weather fragrance, to my mind. Interestingly, Rhubarb Ecarlate and Bigarade were created by the same person, Jean-Claude Ellena, so I guess I like his style.

A very long time ago, I worked in the offices of a place that made paper products, and the plant occasionally ran fabric softener. If most people knew what that stuff was made of, they wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole! But I can't unknow what I know, and fabric softener is completely off the table for me forever.

Being retired has opened up fragrance for me. My workplace was fragrance free. I am currently wearing Diptyque:
Fleur d Peau for a light fragrance and Shadow on the Water for a heavier one.
When the weather warms up here in the Northeast US, I’ll switch to a very light citrus based fragrance-or bergamot. I’ve been enjoying everyone’s posts!

Unfortunately, fragrance irritates my skin and gives me migraines. When I could wear perfume, I wore Colours by Benetton, Femme du Bois by Shiseido and Opium by Yves Saint Laurent.

I love the idea of a light, fresh perfume.Yet for folks with sensitivities, scents can ruin a day. I have bad reactions to many of them, but am capable of enjoying a light amount of a very few. Not sure what the difference is. Musk seems to make my throat close, others can make for watery eyes or a migraine. I am most comfortable avoiding wearing scents and find it interesting how many folks report difficulties when exposed to them. It is especially a challenge in confined spaces.

I love the idea of being a signature-scent person like Angie, but the reality is that I’m restless and crave change and variety, so I inevitably end up switching from season to season.

My mom has fragrance sensitivities and my workplace is scent free (or it was when I was last in it almost two years ago!), so I am on team scent-free. I sometimes diffuse essential oils at home or dab them on myself.

I have a bit of a perfume collection (20+ bottles plus samples and decants) and usually wear something different every day. Mostly warmer woody/spicy notes on cooler days, and realistic florals/green/conifer wood notes when it's hot. I don't use heavy citrus since they fade quickly, and I don't like "pink florals" like rose or peony. Surprisingly I do like white florals; I enjoy the fresh creaminess.

I got into perfumes because I was smelling things I really disliked on other people. Unfortunately I haven't identified what specifically bothers me! But perfume counters in department stores seem to have a number of these. I think they're mostly very artificial florals?? I haven't dug that deep.

In the perfume community I've seen confusion between what is an irritant and what is a true allergy. An irritant irritates nasal passages, throat, mouth, etc. An allergy goes further and triggers an over-reaction of the body's defense systems.

For example, I've sampled two Chloé scents and both gave me a scratchy sore throat within 15 minutes. Guerlain Samsara did the same, though it took several hours to come on. (No other Guerlain has done so; I own Shalimar, L'Heure Bleu, and Mitsouko among others.) And other scents, like some pink florals, and the mystery smells on other people, cause itchiness in my nose. I don't think any of those are allergens, but they irritate my nasal passages.

For my fabric softener, though, I change it seasonally! I like spicy vanilla in the winter but switch to the ocean or mountain fresh fragrances in the summer Am I the only one?

I have chronic migraine—49 years & counting—and chemical sensitivities, so I avoid perfumes and buy unscented products across all categories where they are available. It can be tough negotiating the artificially scented world.

Joy, I am intolerant of tons of scents, chemicals etc, even faint ones, I have autoimmune reactions and allergies but for me, a light dab or two of organic pure essential oils cut with a carrier oil, end up perfectly tolerable and not too strong at all. You might try it.

In another life I used to love Tresor, L’air du temps, and White Linen.

I am still trying to find "the one" and have concluded that perhaps there isn't one magic fragrance I can wear all the time. Right now I switch between White Suede and Rose Prick, although I sometimes wear Toabacco Vanille and Oud Wood in the cooler weather. Tom Ford has three new rose fragrances out that I want to try, but I haven't been to a store that has them available to test yet.

I enjoy changing my fragrance depending on the season, the day and the event. Additionally, I become anosmic to a fragrance I wear daily, and fragrance, IMO, is as much for the enjoyment of the wearer as for anyone else. Indeed, I use a light hand in application so I cannot be noticed outside my bubble of personal space.

MsMaven, a lot of perfumes replaced their ingredients due to stricter legal requirements (at least in Europe).

I used to change my scent, l'heure bleu by Guerlain in the winter and a rose scent by serge Lutens in the summer. Unfortunately I had to stop due to the chemicals, even a small amount was causing me headaches and other problems!

I replaced the scents with natural scented oil in the summer (weleda lemon oil, sandal oil, lavender oil...) and natural scented creams in the winter (weleda rose and a gifted cream with iris).

It's surprising to see how many people are also affected by the chemicals in the scent!

I am allergic to lavendar and increasingly to white flowers such as jasmine. If I go to a mall--rare these days--I skirt the cosmetics and fragrance counters and stay away from candle stores.

A couple of weeks ago I decided I should wear my Chanel #5 more often and as soon as I put it on, I realized it was a mistake. What happened? Had it changed over time? Had I changed?

Did some research. I thought Chanel used synthetic ingredients. True, but they also use jasmine and other natural flower scents. They claim that they haven't changed the ingredients, but wait, keep reading, they did dispense with civet, musk and another animal scent. I think those undertones were what made this perfume so attractive to me.

A perfumer acquaintance of my friend suggested L'Aimant as a similar substitute, but I looked and the ingredients include jasmine.

So for right now, until I can find a source of scent packets to try, I'm not using scent in any season.

Also, my bottle of Chanel #5 eau de cologne received as a gift a few years ago, now sells at $146 (3.4 oz. bottle) at Macy's!

Unfortunately I am sensitive to perfumes, and opt for unscented in everything that provides that option - from personal care products to laundry soap. If someone uses a light hand with their scent, I can enjoy a bit of it vicariously.

My seasonal grooming switch up concerns my hair. In cold weather I tend to blow dry and straighten it, whereas in summer I let it air dry naturally curly.

Joy, yes! I tolerate lavender mostly pretty well. I find natural essential oils are the most tolerable for me.

Although I like some scents on others, I have never found one I like on me. If I did I think I would wear it every day of the year.

I tend to wear scent only in the fall, winter and spring. A scent like Miss Dior or Carolina Herrera Good Girl works well in cooler months while I switch over to Elie Saab Le Parfum in the spring, No fragrance in the summer because all it does is make me more attractive to a variety of stinging and biting insects.

Changing scents seasonally sounds fun, and I wish I could wear them but I have allergies. I start sniffing and sneezing even when seated next to someone in a theater.

Yes, Jenna,I go easy on whatever I put on for that reason and wear no scent if going out among people. The lavender seems the most tolerable for others. The Eau de Rochas is the worst.
