Both! I have separate belts for waist (shorter) and hips (longer), except for a very few long skinny belts that I can use through pant loops on the largest hole and also at the waist when knotted like the way Bella posted above. There's just no way other belts can fit both my hips and waist, too much difference in size. In general I haven't found it to be problematic, mainly because I don't like to use the same types of belt at the waist than at the hip; at the waist I like wider stretchy belts with fancier clasps (and often no holes, just a clasp), and at the hip I like thin-medium wide leather with plain buckles and holes.

I have twice bought belts that I love and would work well on both the hips and the waist in two sizes.

I've been restocking my belt collection, as a lot of my old ones are too big now, or are at the last hole and are too wide and stiff to do that cute little knot with the long end.

I have been making an effort to find belts that fit at my waist but are also long enough to fit with belt loops in jeans, and it's not easy, but it is possible. I tend to like belts that are not very thin or very wide -- usually 2" or so -- so they can work both ways. I mostly wear them with jeans anyway, so I don't need a huge collection for my waist.

If a belt is going to sit nicely at my hips, then it needs to be one of those that are shaped - it just looks better. So I think that, unless it's a skinny one, as Bella says, you need different belts depending how you will wear them.

I am like you, Claire, I possess two belts, both of them are to hold my jeans up But I like the belt look, and I tucked a top the other day *faint* (haven't tucked a top into a bottom since I was about 8 years old) and I felt I needed a 'pretty' belt, so I am looking in the cheaper stores, before I commit properly to building up a belt collection.

I do have a couple of belts that are structured and curved and can fit higher up and somewhat lower down but are not going anywhere near a belt loop.

Belt's don't look good on my hips, so I only have belts for my waist.

clearlyclaire - When I first started building my belt collection, I thrifted them to see if I really was a belt person. I could usually find a cute one at Salvation Army for $2.

I have two Belt Trees - okay, I'm Queen of Belts, so...

One Belt Tree is for Waist Belts. One is for Hip Belts.

Luckily, I am of the size where my waist belts and my hip belts could TECHNICALLY be the same ones, but I like the look of certain belts for each area, hence the two trees.

Good luck!

I am a total belt misfit. I was expecting to be able to find a belt that could go through jeans beltloops and also around the waist of a cardigan sweater, but that's not going to happen! I guess I need more practice, examples, more of a belt "wardrobe". I'm just not sure if I like them enough to spend the money.

skinny belts can accomplish both. You buy one that fits around your hips. When you want to wear it around your waist, you can use this shortening trick:
http://youlookfab.com/2008/09/.....ing-trick/
That said, it is best to start building a belt wardrobe of different lengths, thicknesses and textures.

Yes :-).

I have belts that I wear low slung on the hips, and others that go up snug around my waist. Most belts can't do both.

In addition to considering how/with what you will wear your new belt as you're trying them on, you may want to try woven belts that don't have holes but can be fastened anywhere along the weave. I just recently started wearing belts at my waist as well as with pants, and the only ones I currently wear at my waist happen to be ones I already owned but were infinitely adjustable.

ETA: depending on the material of the belt you're dealing with, the size difference between your waist and hips, and the tools you have available, you may be able to punch additional holes in a belt you already own (or for a less DIY approach, take it to a leather repair shop

I have belts in at least two sizes. I don't wear low rise pants but if they are somewhat lower than my natural waist, I have a larger high hip measurement.

I don't know if this has been asked before, but I thought it couldn't hurt to ask again :)

I pick up a belt, try it on, if it fits my hips it will not fit my waist, if it fits my waist it will not fit over my hips.
Should I not be wearing belts on my waist? (Due to its shortness and highness)

What do YLF-ers do?
