I have separate belts for waist (shorter) and hips (longer), except for a very few long skinny belts that I can use through pant loops on the largest hole and also at the waist when knotted like the way Bella posted above. There's just no way other belts can fit both my hips and waist, too much difference in size. I tend to like belts that are not very thin or very wide -- usually 2" or so -- so they can work both ways.
