I avoid white clothing like the plague because it is so much easier to see imperfections through the fabric. Much like white pants that don't show pockets and underwear and everything else are hard to find, so are white tops that don't show all the wobbly bits in my middle.

But coats? I LOVE white coats. I do not think they make a person look larger at all, and aside from the impracticality of white during a messy winter, I just adore them. Like others have said, the cut and details make all the difference, but I don't think that white coats are anything to be avoided.

A white leather jacket is one of my hewi's so I am ok with whatever silhouette it gives me.

I love white and off white coats and don't feel that they make me look bigger..and I'm tall and broad. I would worry about practicality, however. I have a dress cream coat I love but it does attract smudges and stuff and requires frequent dry cleaning but I love it non the less.

Also, we are the size we are, and any "smaller" or "larger" effect from the color of our clothes, all things (cut and style) being equal, is going to be pretty minimal. I say if you want to try a white or cream coat, don't let any fears about "looking larger" stand in your way!

If you think of how white looks against a light or white background compared to how a dark color would look, I'd say white isn't going to make anyone look larger. I think it's a myth that dark colors are always slimming. It depends on the time of day and on the background color.

In a puffer the details will help a lot - not just the overall cut but the lines of the segments. Some are cut very cleverly to be quite slimming. Can you post the one you are looking at?

I've owned one white anorak-style rain coat and quickly decided white is not practical for me for every day essentials. I went to a fashion show at the mall and gleaned this bit of wisdom from the stylist talking about the beautiful winter white wool dress coat he was showing... "white is not for your dogpark coat, but for your evening out dress coat". My rain coat is machine washable but I cannot keep up with the frequency of washing and bleaching required to keep the sleeve hems white. Some of this is RATE vs. polished it think - my gut knows a white coat is not for me, whereas some find it very easy.

I am also a fan of white and bone coloured coats. Bright white for lighter weight, trans seasonal use and off white for winter. By purchasing a slimmer cut coat, you avoid any illusion of broadness. Lighter coats require more frequent dry cleaning to keep them pristine than a darker coat does. They do mix and match well with all neutrals and colours which makes them a versatile buy. I have never felt like my size looked different in a light coat either. Like Angie, I have a variety of coats and jackets in different colours too.

I am considering the puffer Angie posted, although I have a perfectly good Black long one, grey mid length and red short one. I have wool coats in Dark brown, navy (new) and added the Michael Kors white pea coat (below) this season. I'm hoping it doesn't make me look too big, but it makes me happier to wear it than my old black one so there you go.

They are not nearly as practical as dark coats though - that's a fact. But they make me feel soooooo much better than a black coat. So there you go.

I do love my ink blue coats though. I have three and find them soooo much softer than black. I am down to too black coats: an extremely warm puffer and my mixed media Matrix coat. They are seldom my first choice of coat because they are black. Plus the long black puffer is for below freezing temperatures.

I have many white jackets and coats, and do not feel larger in them. I feel bright and happy. My next puffer would be this one if I was not sized out:

I own a cream JCrew lady coat (wool with a thinsulate lining). It is cut close to the body and is extremely elegant. I feel like a million dollars every time I wear it. Do I ever consider I might look large in it? never. My only concern when I wear it is keeping it clean!

I love how it adapts to colourful scarves and hats. I wear it with purple leather gloves and a cream stripe scarf with purple & light blue.

I love everything white/cream/ivory so I am probably a little bit biased here. I do not think a white/cream puffer will make a person look bigger. It does make a bigger statement than black as it is so unusual.
Are you into colour at all? I know Land's End sells puffer in many different colours.

For years I have stuck to dark jackets and coats and wear loads of black. My black down parka is starting to look worn and I am thinking of replacing it with something not black. I would love to embrace cream or white but worry about looking and/or feeling too large. Does anyone else feel this way?
Other options are grey but I am trying to buy overall less grey and black.
