In my opinion you will not be sorry if you order these. They are perfect for chasing after a toddler, easy to get off and on etc. My take on Birks being fashionable is that when I wear mine I'm not completely unfashionable. Because I will wear them. They are that good. :)

Hee, dashielle. I may wear my Birkis ironically this Saturday if I can work this gallery opening into my schedule. I'll have to try on the outfit first to see if it works.

(...but not with my harem pants. Gosh...forgot I had those, bot 'em what...35 years ago? Eeeep.)

At the risk of having tomatoes hurled from the gallery...Dansko has some cute-ish sandals on offer these days AND they're backed by podiatrists I've had mine in storage in favor of pointy toed pumps etc., but with this year's trend of fugly sandals, I'm planning on getting them out again...to wear ironically, perhaps with harem pants, of course.

Thistle - I say go for it!! - those are way better than track shoes for the chasing the speedy princess!! I'm actually most drawn to the authentic look of them - I actually still have my arizonas in the back of the closet - they are chasing the equally speedy dog at our house!! - No backs on mine - I took them to the cobbler and had them add 2 additional holes and trim the straps so they fit more snugly - no back straps required for my low volume feet!!

As Beth Ann said, I am after them for "park" shoes. Last year, I wore my Tevas. Yes, yes I did. In all my new mom glory :) With a back strap. So I could chase my DD, push her on the swings, and run through the grass with her.

I like Birks, but I have low to medium volume feet and cannot keep them on without a back strap. Hence the question. I had considered getting these as an upgrade to the Tevas.

I regularly give on fashion for toddler wrangling "gear" :) Wrangling the same toddler who looked at me at Target the other day, said "Momma, I am fast!" dropped my hand and tore off across the store. And yes, she is fast. I had to hustle to catch her.

Fortunately it was 8am and Target had just opened. Only one other, snickering, mom saw the whole fiasco. I can only imagine what this summer will bring!

Okay, just to clarify, it wasn't nudist all the time (although I think that was the reputation among locals). It started out as a Quaker camp in the 40's then in the late 60's it embraced more cultural freedoms, and one of these included no clothes required while swimming (and funnily enough gardening, I would have loved to be a fly on the wall at the camp meeting where that guideline was passed). It became an optional tradition. And yes, you had to wear shoes unless you were on the waterfront. Actually one interesting thing about it is that it appeared that nothing desexualizes the body quite as effectively as everybody hanging out in the lake nude and sporting mosquito bites and farmers tans.

Kind of echoing--these are great utilitatian sandals and best with jeans or shorts (or casual ankle pants ha). IMO the suede adds to comfort in sandal straps but also increases the casual factor.
So I would not get them to be on the Birkie trend --would evaluate differently, as to whether they fit your needs. If the question is, what is a comfortable flat but trending casual foot-covering, then I think you'd have to get the more "ironic" black patent or metallic Birks or slip-on tennies or a loafer, or a cut-out sneaker or something. If you definitely want a sandal and want that to be somehow 2014, there would be another type that is more modern, and perhaps the sandal-lovers give some more options.

Is this your "playground shoe?" I'm just coming out of that stage of parenting. My kids are starting to value parks as places to meet with friends, rather than to, say, swing! Last summer, I ran a circuit in the park in my trainers while they "hung out" around the equipment. I could keep an eye on them periodically, but they didn't have their mom "on the bench."

You're still and the "chase and push the swing" stage, which requires shoes that let you climb on the equipment and walk on the mulch chips and gravel without stubbing toes or getting mulch between your toes. Cushioning and arch support and a back strap (unless you have high volume feet like me) is crucial

I think Birkies would work for this, as long as your foot is wide enough. Like the others, I prefer smoother finishes -- maybe a real color, too, or a lower contrast metallic.

Oh, and, while I love Quakers, I suggest wearing clothing with them!

Thistle, I think it's worth trying as a practical MOTG shoe. I don't think it makes a fashion statement, though, if that's what you're going for. This style of Birk is more of a functional item. In my neck of the Midwest, I see women of all ages wearing this style with ultra-casual wear. Think farmers' markets, outdoor jazz concerts, casual family-friendly outings. IMO, you can't really dress it up, if that's your goal. I think Echo is onto something, though -- instead of the brown suede, try one of the smooth leather varieties. That seems more refined and 'you' than the original brown suede.

Rabbit and Rachy, you are killing me. :)

The back strap itself makes no difference to the trend, IMO. Rebecca Minkoff has a variant out with a back strap, as do some other designers, so the strap isn't relevant to the trend. The colour/finish might be, if that matters to you. It seems smooth and darker finishes are trendier than suedes and softer colours.

FWIW, I have these in a smooth dark brown and I adore them. Of course, I bought them long before they were ever trendy, and I bought them with comfort in mind. If it matters, the back strap makes them more difficult to wear with dresses in my mind, simply because they seem "weightier" and make the look bottom-heavy, but a lighter colour helps with that. I love these.

These just look like the Arizona with a strap in back. I have several pairs of Birkenstocks and one is brown suede like this. Do they have to be black to be trendy? I don't know. I do know someone who wears a pair exactly like this, and he is not a mom on the go. He is a 20 something guy!

I think brown suede reads as hippie/boho rather than 'readopted by fashionistas' in patent white, pastels, metallics or black. It's the authentic look as Sarah says.

The funny thing is the second wave Dead Heads I know/knew tended to be trust fund kids. Money wasn't necessary, comfort and togetherness on the other hand were. Also I'll always love the smell of patchouli and cigarettes because of my first Dead Head boyfriend in the early 90's, so I have warm fuzzy feelings toward the boho look in general. Also I associate it with farmers markets and organic farms, which are wonderful tasty things. I think they mostly grew up to be environmental defense lawyers, rain-forest botanists, farmers and such.

I had a summer job at an organic farm Quaker nudist teen camp in Vermont once (yes, that actually exists). There were times it went too far for me, when people were sewing their own maxi pads out of scrap cotton or something, or trying to reach consensus with 100 teenagers on whether they should use salt on the 'everything grown locally day'. But on the other hand it was kind of great.

Sorry for the thread hijack with the Birkenstock related memories.

If I am in charge sure!... in the real world? will have to ask the experts (not sure the brown is the color, it definitely feels "authentic" birk versus more fashion forward in a patent or color or metallic? (although, i dont personally care for the birki-flor vegan material they use for most of those finishes...)
