I know this is a thing with Starbucks etc. I had a student in my anthro class last semester who explained this. She is from Hong Kong, and said there that people will save cups from Starbucks, and paper bags from certain brands and stores and re-use them because it shows that you have money to consume these products.

So a McDonald's bag for example is a high status item because a McDonald's meal costs quite a lot relatively, so flashing around that you can go there (or the appearance that you can) is attractive.
That's insane (oh... unless they are limited addition bags by a well known designer). Insanity with provisos.

In surfing eBay, I came across several listings for paper bags from common, more-or-less affordable shops including Starbucks, the Yankee Candle company, and so on. I can kind of understand buying luxury brand bags like Prada or Burberry (for using as a gift bag or home decor) or the Hollister bags which feature a series of scantily-clad hunks, for lack of a better term, but I don't understand buying paper bags from ordinary brands.

Or maybe I'm missing a trick and I should start auctioning Wal-mart and Primark bags...?
