I'm sure many others relate to Dylan Thomas's poem on the death of his father.&nbsp;</p> <p>Thank you all for your kind comments. I do appreciate them.&nbsp;</p> <p>Rachy, for you. Steve loved military history, beginning with a biography of Julius Caesar when he was 9 or 10. When he was 12 we took a trip to the East Coast, and in addition to all the usual tourist places, we visited battle site beginning with Concord Bridge ("the short heard round the world,") Yorktown, Gettysburg, and others.&nbsp;</p> <p>He dropped out of college at the start of his senior year--he was having mental difficulties. A few months later we learned why--he had a brain tumor--a benign meningioma. He had surgery and a year later returned to school, earned 2 bachelor degrees (history and political science) then earned a teaching certificate so he could teach middle school.</p> <p>He never completely recovered--the tumor and surgery left him with a seizure disorder that required medications he hated.&nbsp;</p> <p>After the surgery I said it was like he'd had a personality transplant--he returned to the sweet loving boy he had been.&nbsp;</p> <p>He was an avid Dodger fan as well as an avid San Jose Sharks fan.&nbsp;</p> <p>Avicennia, thanks for your wise thoughts. In a way Steve had two deaths, his surgery, and then 13 years later, his actual death.
