Too bad I didn’t read that before going out & putting over 5 miles on these! But good to know—that question was one reason I didn’t impulse buy them any of the times I had the urge. Now I’m cleared for takeoff. Thanks

FI -- I took the Vans to Boston this week. I used them on the rainy days, and the black Altras on the sunny days. The Vans did great. No blisters, no chafing. They are just a bit too warm now that it's really spring here, but I appreciated dry feet at the end of the day. I don't count steps, but we walked 4-5 miles each day according to Google Maps, and that doesn't factor in the insides of museums, just getting to-from.

Well those are my faves anyway! I said on the other thread. I always loved Reeboks in the past, have had 3 pairs over time and found them lighter than other brands actually, not heavier. I reckon they could also “go” with some berries.

RL, how ecumenical of you!

Sal, it sounds like your 7-year old shoes do most of the active things these will be asked to do. Most of my fitness activities are fairly ambivalent about shoes (biking (at my level), weight lifting in the gym (at my level)) or are done barefoot (yoga, swimming, resistance training /weight lifting at home). I bought a pair of running shoes a few years ago, but they didn’t make me run. The only sports I’ve played much that have specific footwear requirements are soccer (no, not going to wear cleats around town) and tennis.

Molly Mac, that’s exactly what they were telling me in the store. I guess the feel of tennis shoes is just very familiar—once they were too worn to play in, they always became my run-around shoes. They’re actually good for lifting weights, because of the sturdiness & broad base. Real weight-lifting shoes have a bit of a heel, but tennis shoes come close. But these days I don’t think I’m going to buy another weight bench, so maybe I don’t need to think about lifting at all. I feel a little bit like my dad, who always prefers big & sturdy. As cassette and 8-track tapes were both coming out, he made the choice that our home stereo system, wired and all, would be 8-track. That’s a cautionary tale for me about my love for the way the tennis shoes feel.

Suntiger, high 5 on barefoot workouts. Your pink shoes are cute! I wish the ones that fit well were either that color or the color of the Nikes. These Reeboks, however, are more of a peachy, orangey, sandstone, mauve kind of pink. That’s not a color I usually wear, but it might not be the end of the world.

LaPed, wow, you have as many sneaks as I do boots! I get it that they all have specialty purposes, and agree that they work well for daily wear. I’m looking for what the Germans call an “allrounder”. (Yes, they use the English word, and no, I haven’t heard it without a terrible accent. If I don’t say it their way, they don’t understand me.) Have you walked a couple miles in the Vans? I was considering a pair of them instead of these, probably Kelly green. I can see that most of yours look like casual shoes rather than like gear, which is probably key.

Aw, Shevia, thanks! That was late July. He’s even taller now!

It has been a long time since I realized I needed to make this purchase. Winter has come and gone, and i can work out outside now—that playground is 300 yards away. I could go back to pulling up reviews of cross-trainers and trying to find the perfect pairing of style (like La Ped’s “stable”) and performance. Last fall, that resulted in dithering and no final choice. If I’m understanding correctly, no one is saying “ack no, not the peach!”, and some are saying “those might could work for some outfits”. I’m still more attracted to the way the tennis shoes feel, because that’s what’s familiar from playing tennis. I think that for now I’m going to let my wallet decide. The peachy pinks are 28€. The tennis shoes are more than twice that much. If I decide I want tennis shoes or white shoes or white tennis shoes or Vans or crosstrainers later, they will be there at roughly the same prices as now. I don’t know if this is sales goggles-y of me or not (if you think it is, please speak up loudly), but I need to get out there and get working out. If I try to make these work in outfits this summer and it’s just not working, please let me know.

Thanks again, everybody, for thinking this through with me.

ETA: just read reviews. These didn’t do terribly well. I’d better get going figuring out the next pair! https://runrepeat.com/reebok-speed-her-tr

I got lifting shoes for weight training last year at the insistence of my trainer. Can you say 'ugly'? Converse for deadlift though. The shoes below for running and all around gym use. They don't 'go' with anything.

I think go for the best shoes on a practical level - and then if there is a choice from there go for the cutest. Int main sneakers are ASICS Kayano which really suit my feet for walking, running, gym and anything else. I prefer some of the Nike air or other sneakers out there for casual looks but they don’t compare for support.

I do own pink Adidas light from seven years ago that I occasionally wear for casual activities eg shooting hoops, park football etc. They are almost worn out though. I am looking for one new pair for casual wear.

I like all the pairs shown - and I think pale pink works with plenty of colours - definitely enough.

I play tennis regularly and have found that true tennis shoes don't work very well for other activities. They are heavier than most athletic shoes and don't have much flex. This provides stability for all the quick pivoting during tennis but isn't very comfortable for every day wear. They don't typically break in and become more comfortable over time either. I only wear my tennis shoes to play tennis for this reason. I much prefer running shoes or cross trainers for HIIT classes or gym activities.

I like both of the pink the most too and agree with Angie to think of them as a neutral-nude.
I just have 1 pair of pink! trainers for everything (many things I do barefoot though) -may not be ideal but works for now. I admit I chose them by color, cause they go with my gear, and are low value contrast with my skin to avoid strong horizontal lines (and the look of big feet).
If I were for some unlikely reason to need fashion sneaks though, I'd go with copper or gold to go with everything. Your version could be rose gold to harmonize with the berries Or burgundy would work too!

I’ve come to this thread to keep it together for ya and to say that I think the white sneakers are more fashion-y, ‘Cuz they’re in right now. But that I feel the pink Reebok are prettiest and look the best on - well formed. Also, pink is a natural with your berries.

I left a comment on your other thread as well. I think it is possible to wear true athletic shoes in a casual context and not look ridiculous. Has more to do with your own tolerance for the look than anything else. I bought my road-running shoes in plain old black/white so that I'd feel better about throwing them on with casual jeans-based outfits and such. They look more "classic" than they would in pink/purple/etc. With a more iconic sneaker, I'm more inclined to choose unconventional accent colours. My own sneaker "stable" consists of all the shoes shown below.

The fleecy Vans and the minty Adidas are solely for casual use (I wouldn't run or hike in them -- although if I lived in a more skate-able place I suppose I could skateboard in the Vans).

The navy blue canvas "Xero" sneakers are one of my most-worn shoes. Good for short hikes, playing outside, travel, really just about everything. I've replaced the navy pair with a tan pair, after almost three years of heavy use, but am too lazy to update the custom find.

The loafer-shaped Allbirds were another heavy-use item. Uppers not the most durable: I wore them outdoors for about a year (spring/summer/fall), then demoted them to house-shoes house shoes for a year, and now the toes are worn through and they really should be tossed. Comfy enough that I want more Allbirds, but will probably go for one of the "tree" styles (eucalyptus fiber), rather than the wool ones. I consider Allbirds casual shoes, not gear, regardless of which style. But I know some (including Jenn on the forum) who work out in their Allbirds.

The Altras with the trail soles only get worn on trails; I wouldn't want to wear out the tread using them on pavement or indoor surfaces. They're terribly ugly but great for backpacking. The black/white ones are the sneakers I reach for on city trips with my kid, or on the rare occasion I run on pavement (I'll do almost anything to avoid running on pavement, but have one 6-mile loop I do regularly that's about 1/3 paved and 2/3 dirt, and these are perfect for that).

So -- of all my sneakers, the only ones I don't ever wear in a casual/street-clothes context are the trail runners, and it's as much for the sake of the shoes (and my wallet) as it is for the preservation of my style persona.

LaPed, the Nikes are the pair I said I am not getting because they don’t fit well—I just like the color, and showed it to say what I wish the other ones were. (The pink Nikes are a red herring, lol).

Well, I don’t think that you can get fashion sneaker and fitness sneaker in the same pair. If you are looking for the fitness sneaker looks or color are not the most important features and I don’t care if they go with anything. That is just my opinion, I could be wrong, of course.

Liesbeth suggests a session trying them on with different outfits. My reaction to that might already give away the answer—I’m having a hard picturing either of them in outfitty outfits, more as being worn with civvies when I need to, like going to my son’s game before working out in the same building. I’ll think on it some more and should go root through my summer clothes, but I know, for example, that they are unlikely to be my first choice with jeans. There might be shorts I’d prefer them with.

And I consider myself a tomboy, the irony!

I bought the shoes at the store. They are expensive shoes (but super high quality) and I’m racking up a lot of mileage, usually 4-8 miles per day and increasing the amount of running intervals, so I need a good pair. This store also had a membership discount that helped reduce the cost.

Molly Mac, wow, those are funky!

Becky, lol, When he leans over to put his head on my shoulder in public, I tell him that someone is going to mistake us for being on a date sometime. He is horrified at the idea, as a teenager should be.

BJ111, Thanks for the compliment! I'm skeptical of Converse--the reason I got rid of the Sperrys was that they hurt my back, and I got tired of having to re-arrange the inserts. But I will def. look into the allbirds, with all the votes they are getting.

Angie, I missed that post, but will def go look. Thanks for mentioning it.

Kari, did you buy the shoes at that store, or find them cheaper elsewhere?

If you can, go to a specialty athletic store, even a running store, that can help you get a good fit. They should assess your activity level, your foot shape as well as fit, and sometimes your gait. I got a gait analysis where I could see easily how I move when I walk, explained what I find most and least comfortable in a shoe, and tried several options. I ended up with Brooks Glycerin as I need a low and somewhat flexible shoe, soft but not “mushy”, not too wide all around but generous/high volume in the instep.

I am a fan of Adidas Ultra Boost. They work well for true athletic endeavors but come in really fun colors/patterns that work for a "fashion" sneaker. I was in Paris last week and all the young adults were wearing them with a variety of outfits, including dresses.

My first thought was Allbirds. They are ridiculously comfortable. I know a few people on the forum use them at the gym.

Thanks, DANUSIA, CLARAT and SARAHD8. The only one of those brands I'd thought about at all is Allbirds. I haven't tried them yet, but it sounds like I should. Nike and Sketchers come at the issue from opposite directions. I'll look into both of them--those Tanjuns look cute.

I wear Nike cross trainers at the gym. I also have a pair of Nike runners. Nike seems to be the only brand that fits my foot well - narrow in the heel and wide in the front. Other brands do not work for me.

Nike Tanjuns are super comfy but supportive enough for all of your activities. They won't look great with a skirt on me, but this depends on your legs and the shoe color to some extent. AllBirds wool runners are pretty all-purpose. I have both of these and they are good all-purpose sneakers with a flexible upper. You may want a more structured/supportive upper for basketball.
