Barring dry cleaning which would be my first choice - I would, in your shoes, hand wash that in cold water (not temperate) with a color catcher sheet. I would use a cleaning product made for silk and wool/cashmere that does not contain protease (like the steamery’s product). I’d make it a fast wash and see how it goes after you hang dry. You may have to gently steam once dry to get the drape closer to the original.’

It may shrink. But with a scarf, I would think that's not a big issue, as it will still fit. I hand-washed a silk blouse in cold water one time and it shrank enough that I couldn't wear it.

STAR - the sun tends to bleach colored items, of any material, in the long run. But it did not come to my mind that the scarf is thin and it will dry in a few minutes, therefore there shouldn't be problems.

Do you like it or do you love it, and how much of an investment do you have in it? These are my considerations when I ignore instructions. If I just liked it, and had only spent $2.99, I would definitely hand wash it. But that’s my thought process.

Test a small corner to make sure the dye is set. I have a lovely silk/rayon top that was dry clean only and I decided to hand wash it. The garment held up but the dye was not set and much of the lovely color went down the drain.

I would hand wash it. I’ve done this with multiple thrifted or hand-me-down silk items. Immersion in water can permanently change the sheen of some silk fabrics to make them a bit duller or more matte. As far as I know, that’s the worst that could happen with a scarf (more complex garments with layers would be a different story), and with a burnout velvet texture, that wouldn’t exactly ruin it.

I think I used “wool wash” for my blouse, this has eucalyptus in it and I use it for handwashing delicate items as well as wool. Sorry I don’t know if you have such a product in the US but surely something similar.

Thanks SISI and THE CAT. Interesting about the vinegar. What does the sun do? Shrinkage? Is it not recommended for silk and wool only? I wasn't suggesting putting the washed wet item in the sun, but for airing purposes if not stained.

I think you can wash it in cold water with a few drops of delicate detergent, or shampoo, rinse ( if you see it bleeds add a few drops of white vinegar in the water), press, dont twist, wrap a few minutes in a terry towel, then let it air dry flat, not in the sun. It's more complicated to explain than doing ! If you want to iron it, do like Jenny.
I hand wash all my "dry clean only" things this way. Very pretty scarf!

I would air it on my washing line, preferably in the sun, when the weather is suitable if it doesn't have stains. I don't dry clean, instead I use a laundry bag but I have no experience with silk.

I was able to hand wash my Thai silk fuchsia blouse, but it did get very crumpled/wrinkly so I had to Google how to iron silk. You had to use another layer over it when you ironed it. I hate to dry clean anything. Blouse in question in pic below. Definitely silk.

I just acquired this burnout velvet scarf in my thrifting adventures. The label says “100% silk/rayon Dry clean only.” I reeeeallllyyyy do not like spending money on dry cleaning. I almost never do it except for coats. Surely I can hand wash this? What would you do?

I mean, it wouldn’t be a tragedy to ruin something I got for $2.99 but I’d still rather not ruin it.
