Just chiming in to wish you luck with whatever you decide to do, Suz. Sorry shipping is such a hassle for you YLFers in Canada.

(I feel quite guilty since me and my new skirt are responsible for your current state of indecision...:)

I'm over in Ottawa, and I believe the UPS in Ogdensburg will hold packages shipped to them for a small fee. There's another shipping/post-office south of Montreal that does the same. You might want to try the nearest cross-border post-office location! It's definitely cheaper than the shipping and tariffs.

Can you order them to be delivered to the place you husband is going to stay at? You can call there and ask if they can hold the parcels for him until he arrives?
I had some luck and some misses and do it only if I can return easily or more or less sure about the fit (like my white Express trousers).
I am also seriously looking into using this service on the border. As you I am very nervous to pay taxes and duties and shipping on something which may not fit and then have all this hassle with the international returns. Even if I have to pay tax on the border I will only pay it on stuff I want to keep and can mail back what I don't want while still in US.
I am considering some Fidji shoes now on endless and already registered for this service on the border...bad Sveta!

I have ordered from Nordstrom with my Cdn credit card without problems so that should not be an issue. I am really trying to curb my online shopping. I occasionally get something outstanding but more often it is just a bit off. The exception is my new silk shirts. :).

Kim, that's awesome, thank you! I am going to investigate. Wellesley Island is definitely close enough - there might be other points, too. I think Nordstrom's would be okay with the Canadian card - I ordered to the US using a Canadian card before and they had no difficulty with that. It would be well worth the hour long drive to be able to send stuff back if it didn't work, too! Okay - off to investigate.

Suz, I ordered the report boots to be delivered to a hotel that my friend was visiting. She is supposed to return tomorrow. but I hear you about shipping and customs. I would not take the risk.

Suz, I can get stuff delivered to a border shipping point in Messina NY and they will hold if for a month for $5.00 per item. (It's a hardware store/post office type deal) I had my dressmakers dummy shipped there (free shipping from Amazon) and no problem at all. I just order when I'm ready to go and pick up when I'm heading that way. You must have something like that near you in the States.

Here's the website I used, and it was all free. It should show you the nearest point you can have it shipped to. The only hold back might be that Nordstrom's might not ship to a 3rd party address when you use a Canadian credit card. But you never know...(enabling...LOL)

http://shiptotheborder.com/fin.....ng-address

ETA I just quickly checked the website and it says they have a delivery point (a lumber hardware store open 7 days a week) at Wellesley (sp) Island. Is that close?

I think this way too, if you are prepared to try stuff on (at the Walmart bathroom or someplace like that on the U.S. side) you can take advantage of the free return shipping offered by some companies for those things that don't work out immediately. Should be fun to see your "Real Time K/R's from Walmart"....LOL

ETA The $5.00 fee is per package, not per item. So if you buy 10 things from Nordies and it comes in one package (and is 10lbs or under) the handling fee is $5.00. (Just to be clear)but I think if they ship individually you'd pay $5.00 per package received on your behalf. I'd make sure if I was ordering a lot that they all got shipped together....(Just planning ahead a bit. LOL)

All very good points indeed.

Texstyle, your concern is exactly why I always hesitate to order unless I will be there in person to send back in person. I have only ordered from Nordstrom's twice and I asked lots of questions and made sure of my size (as much as possible) before ordering. Luckily, I was ordering Angie recommended or forum recommended items only and could make pretty good judgements. And it worked for me. But...I have also had less success from other US ordering experiences. ;(

I might talk to Customer Service. Unfortunately, I don't think my husband will be near a store when he is in the states; he is going to be at that retreat location Kari mentioned earlier this year in Eastern Washington - Sleeping Lady.

Suz, not to totally talk you out of it, but I've had such bad sizing luck with Nordstrom lately. I ordered 5 things. 3 in the same order. Each item came in a separate box on a separate day and it wasn't "speedy". Only 1 of the 5 was even near what I expected in terms of sizing and color. Maybe you already have great experience with Nordstrom - and I'm sure many people do - but my size isn't "tricky" (size 6-8) and I ALWAYS order clothing from online sources. And what about the cost of return shipping if you don't like something?

Suz - Do you get an option to pick up in the store when you are on the item page? That may work for you, if your husband will be near a Nordstrom's.

I can't decide. I"m just about to pull the trigger on a Nordstrom's order. I want that midi skirt that Nancylee was wearing...and a bunch of other things also found their way to my cart.

I wouldn't really hesitate if I didn't also have to pay duty and shipping. That's what gets me every time.

Is there any way you can ask them to delay shipping until a particular day? My husband's going to the US in a few weeks; if I had stuff delivered to him it would be so much cheaper. But I am scared to wait in case it is gone.
