Angie, yay! I was looking forward to you coming back from your staycation so I could hear your thoughts. Appreciate the thumbs up Pattern mixing intrigued me when I started at ylf; I think I might have earned certification in it by now, lol.

I'm in the "go for it" camp too! The outfits in pics #3 and #7 are my faves! The pattern mixing is hectic and harmonious, and works! Creative, DYOT, confident, and very 2021. WELL DONE :)

#1 is all over retail and IG, and is fashionably hip!

Loving #9 too. KILLER new raincoat!

Thanks Ms Maven! I’ve got the “adventurous spirit” part down, am just working on the “style” I am tempted to take in the bodice on the yellow dress, tbh. Otoh, I am supposed to be working on pull-ups, which would give me a broader back. It’s nearly 2” that I want to put on. I have not been putting in the work; my back is not growing. I suppose I could give myself until spring clothes switch time and then see how I feel.

Sally, GOOD that you couldn’t tell they’re maternity dresses. Pic 10 was intended to give it away after people had an unbiased look at the outfits, which is also the reason for my circumlocution in the original post.

I like ## 3, 7, 9. The last dress has potential, but I'm not sure what to suggest. I didn't notice the wide underarm seams until you pointed it out. I had a dress with a similar problem. I have a narrow ribcage and I bought a dress online that had too much fabric under the arms. When I used to sew my own clothes and I always cut back the upper back. I no longer have a sewing machine, but I basted the seam on this dress and it looked better. I didn't get around to taking it to be altered and then the lockdown came along.

So I don't know quite what to suggest, but if you showed up in my local grocery store I would follow you around and take notes. I would love to see someone with style and an adventurous spirit.

I misread the post. I didn't realise they were pregnancy dresses. I just thought they looked nice. I have thrifted shirts and later realised they were meant for maternity. I don't think it matters.
Helena's story reminded me of a woman I met when working in an office once. She had just qualified as a furniture designer but often just wore skinnies and a top. This day I complimented her on her tunic. She said oh I'm just wearing a blanket. It was a lightweight wool blanket and she had folded it well with a belt and no-one was the wiser. I don't know if I could pull that off but yes if it works, and you wear it with confidence, it works.

Aha I wouldn't dwell on the 'yes' vote if I were you - I find that, unless that person comes forward with their reasoning, wondering isn't going to get you any answers. Most of us voted for no, so it's okay! But then again, I may be biased because I like my long & loose dresses, lol

Thanks Suz! I’m not sure why these came so easily. Last year I posted about and got suggestions for extending the wearing season of some summer items, but none of them ever felt right. Maybe maternity clothes are designed to be more flexible? That’s my theory anyway.

SarahD8, I passed on various baby things to people along the way who needed them—high chair, breast pump (had been given to me), booster seat, bike seat, stroller…. I don’t mind the dress gapping like that as long as there’s a cardi over it, so will probably wear it at home & to the grocery store until I run into someone for whom it’s more appropriate.

Rachylou, you said that about another dress outfit of mine as well. I don’t get it—I’ve never been described as artistic, am too old to be a hipster, and the last time I was in your town, my little boy sat on my lap on the cable car. But yet I have a line on fashion & style there, lol. I take your comment as a compliment, so thanks.

I like these a lot on you! The first one is brilliant -- very 90s in a 2021 way. But my faves are the outfits with the red boots, esp. #7. Sort of urban prairie, if that makes sense. I love how you show us how it looks in the wild, so to speak, so we get a sense of the environment. Wearing your clothes this way allows you to keep getting use out of items you would otherwise have to stop wearing on account of the chill.

It's odd, but I've always had trouble with the layering summery dresses thing for myself. It has never really kept me feeling warm enough (though the right tights and underthings help). But I really enjoy it on others when they do it with pizzaz, which is what you are doing here!

SF, yes, you’re seeing what I’m seeing. Especially in the back view, those extra triangles of fabric under the arms suggest that it’s too big in the chest/upper torso. I didn’t notice the zipper not laying flat but now that you point it out I do. I vote pass along the long dress so that someone who is in that phase of life can enjoy it, and have fun playing with the shorter one!

I love Helena's comment - and you have an eclectic style, so these work on you. #1 and #9 are my favourites. #7 has a lot going on, so that is the least conventionally flattering. However, there is something very of fun about such a hectic and random outfit that appeals to me.

SF a story for you ... My SILs stylish friend once bought a beautiful embellished wrap from a department store to wear with her dress to a wedding. She went to SILs house before the event, only to see said "wrap" adorning the dining table. She had bought a table runner!! Her response: I don't care, I'm wearing my table runner! And she did. And the moral of the story is: if it works, it works!!

Helena and Suntiger, I’m starting to think I put too much credence in the idea that these were designed specifically for pregnant bodies. Otoh, one of the things I think is so cool about pregnancy is how specific it is—sure, there can be a little added weight or swelling in other body parts, but it really is mostly confined to the midsection. Iow, the shoulders of these dresses would not be designed any differently than for straight sizes. Now I’m wondering if there are other ways I take manufacturers too much at their word for how a thing should be worn.

Helena, thanks for the styling compliment! “Pregnant ingenue” is not a moniker I plan to take up though.

Suntiger, those panel jeans! Even when I *was* pregnant, they were not a thing I ever wanted to wear.

Lyn, thanks for your thoughtful comment. #1 didn’t feel super great to me—the others all did—but it has the pic in the classic “holding the belly” pose, so I went ahead & included it. I am having fun with clothes these days, not taking them or myself too seriously. I hear you on repeating old stylings. Several times I’ve posted remixes on the forum, and comments have guided me back to the way I always wore things. I guess accessories really matter?

I’m adding the same new pix here and to the OP. They are experiments with tying the yellow dress tighter, layering under it, and adding a pendent and a more fitted topper on which I can scrunch the sleeves. I think the necklace + higher neckline + pattern on the dress = too much. I’m not even sure I like the red under the dress at all, even without the necklace. Do y’all agree? Btw, the weird green blobby thing hanging over my head isn’t. It’s actually a piece of the plant in the pot the phone is leaning against, dangling down. Please excuse the hair-on-head, purple house socks, and visible dirt.

One thing I notice in the new pix, especially those without a topper, is that the movement of the dress doesn’t come through at all. Sally’s “prairie” descriptor sounds right for the dress, but in some of these pix I look like the sturdy Midwestern farmers in my family tree. #2 here is particularly awful, but choosing a frame from the “Live Photo” .mov file, I was taken by the motion and flow, but no matter which still moment I captured, they all had roughly this effect of a billowing dress that makes me look too big & blocky. Not sure if that’s real or if I’m making excuses for the dress. The back view suggests that SarahD8 might be right & it’s just too big—the zipper hangs off my back, and it’s loose & droopy at the armholes.

It looks you have real fun with clothes nowadays. I like best nr 3, 7, &9 all great put together well and great color scheme outfits. Nr 1 is not my fave as generaly I don't like ditsy for me(but that's my own failure, isn't it!:-))- especially when no contrast, pale printed+ ustructured+maxi but somehow it integrates in your style with the sweatshirt and shooties. Brooklyn said is so 2021 and she really has the eyes for it so am really amazed on your's ability of both to nail hyper-trendiness with an old piece. I do have old faves myself perhaps even older than this one-but would probable style them the same way as their very first time-so the result would be classic at it's maximum-and trendiness would surely be excluded.

Agreeing with Carol that no one knows they're maternity without seeing the tags. Dresses come in all sorts of shapes. It's not like they're the jeans with the obvious stretchy panels!

What a cool set of comments from some of the forum’s coolest & most playful dressers! I’ll go add Pippi Longstocking to my fashion icons ;)

Bridgie, thanks for breaking the dam and being the first commenter. I was nervous posting the maternity dresses, so hit “refresh” way more than I’d like to admit, until you commented.

Sally, come on in, the water’s fine. I wouldn’t suggest buying maternity clothes at menopause time, but your kids are younger than mine, so maybe you still have the clothes around too. Oddly, I was not drawn to these when I was overweight. Losing it makes things look/feel different, you know?

Nikki, your own outfits are always so playful and fun. I’m glad you recognized like in these. The water shots are of the Mühlendamm locks, one of the oldest parts of Berlin, and Jannowitz bridge, a couple hundreds yard up the Spree River.

CarolS, I’m glad you like the outfits—and relieved to hear someone say outright that the original purpose of the dresses isn’t immediately obvious.

Sarah & Brooklyn, thanks for the styling suggestions. I’m not sure the leopard jacket adds more structure than the suede one in 2A, but I will try taking the attached belt a bit more seriously to add a little more structure that way. In these pix, it’s tied extremely loosely. The yellow dress is a pinafore, so no sleeves to push up, but I’ll try layering under to let some structure be seen.

Synne and Katerina, cool that you like the yellow dress and the pants outfit, respectively, because I suspected you might like those as I put those pix up.

Synne, Emmylou Harris, eh? I love her “Trio” recording with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt, but will have to look up her look.

Katerina, I love that your color challenge is still percolating in the forum. Not sure I’ll get to it, because next week will be fall shorts & tights week for me, but I’m watching & appreciating from afar.

I love how you are having fun with your outfits and the playful creativity! I am with Brooklyn - theses outfits are very you and great. I don’t think the dresses look like they are intended for a different stage in life, it is a specific style and you wear it beautifully.
And I LOVE outfit 9 on you. The fall colour blocking is right up my alley.

I’m going to add “swanky” to my style moniker :)

I think these look great and very authentic to your style. I like the first one the best. It looks a bit 90s, which is very 2021. If you wanted to add more structure you could scrunch up the sleeves and/or add a pendant. The outfits in 6 and 7 are fun, interesting and unique.

I say just go for it! You are an american, have long flowy hair, in the long dresses you remind me of Emmylou Harris. I like the long silhouette over the minis actually!

I like the outfits with the shorter dress a lot! I see Pippi, too.

The longer dress seems a bit oversized and shapeless. That, combined with the length, makes it work less well for me. Maybe try that one with a more structured piece, like the leopard trucker jacket, or a knotted button up shirt? It might just be too big…

Well, unless you wear the labels facing outward, no-one will know they are intended for a different stage of life! So no, no outrage. I think you're wearing them in a fun, cheeky way. Anybody who gets fussed about it has too much time on their hands.

I like the dresses. It’s kind of a free spirit Pippi Longstocking style. And she was one of my favorite characters Sweet water pics as well.

I really like the look of the flowery flowing dress with the jersey...kind of a prairie look in the first 2 pics. The other pictures with the shorter dresses and tights also look great...not sure what style they convey but I would dress like that. I probably will and I'm 50 and could see myself dressing like that into the future so I don't think it is an outrage. It will be interesting to see what others think.

I do not think it is an outrage. I like it all, and I personally would keep wearing it all. If it needs improving I will leave that to other fabbers. :)
