My Kut ponte (same as you have Diana) just came and they are more body con than I expected. I've never shied away from that in the past but am starting to feel a little more self-conscious about it. The VC ponte that Sarah linked to looked great to me - until I saw that the rise is only 30.5". ugh. WAY too short for me.

ETA - and they are on sale for $37?? oh, now I feel a little ill :-/

Diana, I am going through the EXACT SAME QUANDRY, even comparing ponte pants to the BR Martins. BUT, I did order another pair of ponte pants that I prefer to the NYDJ. The fabric is much more substantial, and they have a nice wide waist band, so, while quite fitted, they are not nearly as legging-like. I suggest you might want to try them. They are the Vince Camuto ponte pant. I'm still on the fence, as I've really enjoyed looser trousers and jeans this year, and like you, I'm not sure exactly how I would style them. So, this weekend I'll be trying a bunch of options to help me decide.

ETA: for some reason the link keeps taking me to the heather grey pants, but they also come in black (although not for 50% off, sadly). Just search "Vince Camuto ponte pant".

This is a great question. My recent capsule attempts allowed me to realize on my pear shape, my ponte pants are more like leggings in fit and only work with longer length tops. This makes them less versatile for me, but I still enjoy the rare occasion when I wear them just for a change of silhouette.

You need to feel fabulous in what you wear or you shouldn't wear it. As far as fit, I bought the VC version in brown at NAS and sized up from a 2or 4 to an 8 or 10 for length and slouch.

Being a pretty pear, I have the same fit issues with ponte pants as you do. The only solution I have found was to legthen the VC Ponte ankle pants by letting the hem out to the maximum. They are form fitting, but not in a leggings sort of way, with a little bit of roominess. (hope that makes sense) They do not hug my calves or knees. Letting the hem out all the way made them just long enough, on short legged me, to wear with a low heel, no more than 1".

I just bought ponte skinnies from Eddie Bauer:

http://www.eddiebauer.com/cata.....hInfo=T319

The rise is 9 1/2 inches. A bit too high for my liking, but I really like the looks of these pants. I will not need a tunic to cover the bum, but I will probably wear an untucked shirt with these. I don't know how well they would work for a person with a small waist though.

I also bought the leggings:
http://www.eddiebauer.com/cata.....hInfo=T319

On me, they don't look like they do on the model. I will wear a longer shirt, but I don't feel it would have to be a tunic. Some of my leggings are more like tights, but these are bigger and thicker than that.

I also ordered ponte pants in petite so I hope that the rise is a bit lower too:
http://www.eddiebauer.com/cata.....hInfo=T319

Last week they were on sale and I am sure I saw a discount code somewhere recently but I cannot remember where now.

I was really interested in this thread because I find myself in the exact same place. I don't like the tightness of skinny anything but I want something to wear with boots on the rare occasions that I wear them. I really thought ponte was going to be the answer.

Now, it's not fair to give up since I've only tried on one pair! But the pair I tried on at AT was like you described...way too body con for comfort, emotional and physical. And I even sized up. So now I don't know what to think. I'd like to find a pair that was just enough skinny to tuck into boots, but not so tight that I'm unhappy. Skinny in the calves, sweatpant in the body?? Do they make such a thing?

Please keep us posted if you find a pair you like!

Hmm, Donna, these EF pants are medium rise. Too pricy for me right now, but I'll keep an eye on them and may try if they go on sale. You're right that the rest are too high in the rise for me.
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/ei.....igin=categ

The pics really do help Diana. I agree with your assessment that they have more of a legging appearance. I notice a lot of the jeans/pants have this appearance right now. I've been shopping (like Suz) for a pair of taupe or similar color jeans and every pair I've seen just look way too skinny for my liking. Not that I mind slim styles. I bought the BR ponte pants I think the year before last and I really enjoy them as they are slim but not skinny.

Thanks for asking this question as I have been wondering the same thing. My VC pontes are scheduled to be delivered tomorrow -- and may be going back next week. FWIW, I thrifted a pair of Eileen Fisher pontes years ago, and they were more substantial than a lot of woven pants/jeans. EF's pontes are rayon/nylon/spandex and not polyester, but the rise is higher than you prefer. They are also pricey which worries me because I am prone to sit on surfaces that will catch knits or cause them to pill.

I think they look fine but if they aren't your comfort level then you probably won't wear them. I got a pair from Costco for $19 or so (Calvin Klein brand) because I wasn't sure and didn't want to invest much.

I like them though and I've worn them a few times. I do have to be careful to dress them up enough for work. If worn with too casual a top it sort of looks like I'm wearing gym pants. They pretty much feel like gym pants in terms of comfort though! Definitely more comfortable for me than regular jeans or regular pants, but maybe that's my fluffiness speaking.

Una, thanks for the review of the NYDJs! My no high waist thing is actually more about comfort than looks (although I do not like the look of a tucked high waist on me either). I actually find them very uncomfortable, even though that's where my natural waist is. It's too close to my rib cage for comfort, especially when I sit.

Diana, I tried on the NYDJ trousers and am going to get a pair in charcoal. The rise is old-school high (like over my belly button) but I generally will be wearing them with untucked sweaters and tops in winter, so I don't think it will be an issue. Plus I'm not sure I'm on board with tucking into ponte for myself, as it will end up lumpy somewhere! But would love to find a lower rise as well.

OK, back now with time to respond in more detail. First things first. I think I am going to send these back. I think they just look too legging-y, and my style has moved beyond that. Like many of you, I just can't see these as real pants, and so I'd always feel like I was wearing leggings.

Ramya, I hope the photos are helpful for you!

Kkards, that's a good point. I can wear any kind of pants I want, including jeans, so it's not an issue for me, but I can see ponte pants being very useful if I couldn't wear my skinny jeans. I do also have very dark black straight leg jeans that you can't tell are jeans unless you're very close, and I've ordered another pair of black skinnies that I'm hoping will work in the cigarette pants category.

Una, Suz, and Makrame, I wish I could find the Gap real skinnies to try! I don't remember if they were poly, though - I find high stretch poly to be rather warm and sometimes itchy. (This is actually why I want to replace or at least find a cooler sub for my Martins, as I feel like they're a little too hot for indoors, even in winter).

Pastrygirl and Thistle, I think the more trouser-like styles might be something I will consider. Has anyone seen any straight leg ponte pants in cotton ponte though? The reason why I was excited about the KUTS is that they are cotton and not poly, hence cooler and not itchy. The NYDJs in Angie's picks will not work for me, as not only are they poly but NYDJ rise is way too high for me.

DJ, I don't think sizing up will help. The thing is that these are not actually tight, but the skinny cut combined with the knit fabric makes them cling to my knees and calves. Interestingly, the bodycon nature of the hips and thighs doesn't bug me, even though those are my "problem" areas. Something about the way they cling to the knees and calves makes them feel very legging-y to me.

Diana, do you think sizing up could ease some of the body-con aspect of them? I think they look nice on you, but understand your concerns.

That's a great question! I am waiting for a pair of Angie-recommended ponte pants (NYDJ) to arrive, and am also wondering whether they will have a place in my wardrobe.

I generally wear skinnies or cigarette pants (like the Martins) with longer tops, particularly long woven blouses. My current favorites are GAP real skinnies (woven pants with a bit of stretch) but last time I checked, they were not offered on the GAP website anymore.

I have a couple pair of Ponte skinnier pants. I wore them alot last year. I can wear any type of top with them. I don't need my bum covered, they seem less body-con then some of my skinny jeans. The fabric is thicker and doesnt seem to cling like leggings. They are very comfortable.

Added some photos of the ponte pants up top, plus one of the martin skinnies for comparison.

Your comments have been very helpful! I will be back later to respond in more detail.

They do sound as if they would be repeating the leggings you said you already own. I have a pair of black ponte pants but they are not that body con and I def. don't mind wearing tops tucked in them. Thank you for your review of them!

I have ponte pants, but they are shaped like trousers rather than skinnies. And they are soooooo comfy yet still polished. Polished enough for work, but I could still wear them on weekends. With my body shape, I don't do skinnies at all.

If/when I find ponte pants that need my bum covered, I don't buy them. I look for ponte pants that I can wear like trousers, which is why I haven't found a pair this year yet. (I think Sveta looks great in hers, no covering needed!) I've been reconsidering looking for ponte at all because I don't need another pair of leggings/skinnies. When I do need a pair, I might pick up bodycon ponte just because they seem more durable than, say, Hue leggings.

I have those pants and I really like them. They are fitted but not as body-con as some skinny jeans I've tried, honestly, although maybe that just means I could have gone down a size in these. I think the weight of them also helps them not to appear clingy and tight.

I wear them with regular length tops -- not just those that cover my behind. They are one of my go-to casual black bottoms for fall and winter. I really like having this stretchier option, because I have woven black narrow straight-leg pants as well.

But, it sounds like these might not be exactly what you need. If you have a similar cut covered in the grey jeggings (personally, I find black easier to work with), and you really prefer a woven black pant, it sounds like you need to keep looking.

I have lived in my ponte skinnies this past winter. They are so comfortable and substantial. For extra warmth I have even worn leggings under them! I only ever wear them with tunic length tops. Hope that helps answer some of your questions.

I'm not much help because I don't own any. But the reason I don't own them might be telling. After all, they would be super comfortable for someone who works at home, right? Seems like a bit of a no-brainer to add some to the wardrobe. Yet I haven't.

Why? Well, I do own a pair of the Gap Really Skinnies Una mentioned -- woven stretchy pants. And I have a pair of Theory black moto skinnies that are a similar shape. I do wear those pants with tops tucked or not tucked or any which way, really -- but they sort of stretch (ha ha) the limits of my body-con toleration levels. I don't want to go less structured than that for a pant.

I almost never wear tunics because I find them a major pain for me to style (shorter legs, plus a desire to wear jackets or over layers that often don't work with them.) So I need something comfortable yet more versatile than ponte.

Even my jeggings (made of stretchy denim) are feeling stale to me. I will keep a few pairs because I need them for winter days tucked into boots. But I can't say that I miss having ponte pants.

since i work in a no denim workplace, for me, ponte pants are workwear basic, useful on days when i want to be more casual and days i want to wear a tall boot.
