Agree with everyone. Plus if you read any article, it says the same thing. Spot clean if needed, clean/launder as needed.

Absolutely agree with you and all the others who say only wash when needed if not next to your skin. Washing too much wrecks fabrics.

Well my husband has never had a necktie laundered and has had his for years! I guess you can apply this to other clothing. I only dry clean before I store away for a season, otherwise just spot clean if needed. Sometimes I will turn coats, jackets, etc. inside out and hang them outside in the shade on a cool breezy day and boy do they smell good.

As for moths, I use a couple of drops of peppermint essential oil on a cotton ball and place on a shelf in my closet. Repels all sorts of bugs.

I follow the same rule that you do. I also hang most everything, so it gets a chance to breathe between wears. Part of the reason why I usually wear a tee underneath sweaters (in addition to the extra warmth!).

If its not dirty, I say extend its life and wash less!

Huh. Well maybe we don't have a lot of moths here. I've never had anything with moth holes, ever.

ETA of course now that I've made that statement, I've probably jinxed it.

If it's not dirty and doesn't smell, and doesn't have that weird slick feeling clothing can get, why wash?

And yes, moths can attack anything at any time. Sorry.

OK, good to hear. It just occurred to me that maybe not washing a cotton knit vest was a little weird. I will wash it eventually, because it will get a spill on it, I'm sure!

April, I don't have enough wool sweaters to be worried about moths. I have only three, and they are lightweight enough that they get worn for three out of four seasons in heavy rotation. I don't know much about moths -- can a sweater get moth holes if you wear it every couple of weeks?

I do this too. I only wash when I can tell it needs to be. If I'm unsure because I've worn it several times I give it to my husband who has the most sensitive nose and he does an in-depth sniff test. The only thing I've found it that it's important to wash or dry clean something if it's going to be stored for a very long time, because even an undetectable trace amount of deodorant or sweat for example will eventually start growing something if left alone long enough.

I have skirts which have rarely if ever been washed and it's been years. Part of it is that I tend to change clothes to match activity levels a lot and try to switch to lounge clothes immediately whenever I'm home and possibly doing cleaning or cooking or cat wrangling so the nicer clothes last longer between washes. I even do this with favorite tee shirts, they get worn 'outside' but not in the house. I'm contemplating dividing my sock drawer into 'lounge' and 'unfaded black' in addition to the various gear divisions.

I used to wash everything all the time. It wasn't until I came here and realized things weren't truly dirty and I was putting undue wear and tear on my clothes that I started to wash less frequently. I have a couple of jackets that I have yet to launder or dry clean. They have been worn 7 or 8 times I'd wager. I know they aren't 'dirty' but I wonder if it's good policy to send stuff to the cleaners each year. Because of my FL/Tahoe/FL moves they don't seem to get a full season of wear and so some are 2 or 3 years old now with not 10 wears in them.
I'd say your vest is fine, but maybe at the end of season send it off for a cleaning.

I don't wash such items either, until they show some visible sign that they need washing. I once had a vest that I wore for two years—same situation as you—and I never dry cleaned it that whole time. There was really no point.

I'm wearing a shell vest today over a white button-front shirt, and it has occurred to me that although I wash my shirts after every wear, I don't think I have ever washed the shell. I've owned it for about a year and I've probably worn it seven or eight times. It never touches my skin, never gets body oil or sweat on it, it hasn't been spilled on and smells perfectly fresh. However, it seems weird that it's a regular item of clothing -- i.e. not a coat or jacket -- and I haven't washed it.

I wear merino sweaters over white shirts sometimes too, and I wear them many times before I get them dry-cleaned. They don't touch my skin either. I guess I treat them the same way I treat outerwear.
