Yes!! I was unimpressed with skinnies when they first surfaced! So true! I blog about that fact from time to time because I always own up to things. I was wearing them within 3 months though - which was before this forum started almost 6 years ago (the blog started before the forum). I have always been pro skinnies and straightlegs on the forum.

I also first blogged about slouchies 5 years ago - (see my post that recaps those posts), and have been wearing them for three years:

http://youlookfab.com/2013/02/.....-trousers/

TIME FLIES, Ariadne. It was fun to recap these trend cycles and to remember them through your thoughts because you have been with us forever :). I'm also excited to see how things play out with certain trends. So great to have you back!! xo

Great post! Re Suz's question, I'm MUCH more willing to try new bottom silhouettes than top ones. But that's because I'm easier to fit on the bottom half and more versatile in what can be worn. My top half is my more self-conscious area.

I really enjoyed reading these posts because it makes you think about your own reactions to new trends.
As I have seen many trends come and go, I used to say that if I lived through the style once (e.g. flares, overalls, denim jackets, etc. ) I would not wear it again. I have definitely loosened up on that stand...mini skirts excepted!
When I was a young mom with little money to spend on clothes, I remembered friends teasing me about my stance on capri pants...I was not going to buy them, because I thought they would only last a season....I eventually owned a huge number of capris....perhaps it will be the same with the slouchy pants...they are becoming more attractive to my eye when I see all the YLF postings!

Brilliant post Ariadne! For me personally, I find I'm must less afraid of new silhouettes and trends now that I've been with YLF for a bit. Thanks to Angie's tips on how to interpret these trends for our individual shapes, I feel more confident trying new things and passing on trends that I really know won't work for me.

SO interesting! I remember when the forum was undecided about leggings, and we had so many experimental leggings outfit threads and so many leggings discussions. And look at leggings now! It really puts things in perspective. I've been hesitant about the slouchy trend, but I'm sure I'll come around soon enough.

I am enjoying the whole cycle as well, but more from the fact that I still own and regularly wear a pair of slouchy grey trousers from 18 years ago. They have fit on me at my heaviest and now at my lowest weight are perfect for the super slouchy trend. They flattered my pear shape and I loved them for that when I couldn't find much else in the low low hipster trend in between. I am loving the return of higher rises and the ability to choose skiinies, bootcut, and wide legs! Yea for choice! Yeah for choosing what fits my body and not the latest trend. And why oh why are not dresses and skirts in the same situation yet? why mid thigh only after all these years. ?

Yes, I remember the general fear and lack of love for the introduction of the skinny jean on YLF.

I also remember about a year and half ago or so IronKurtin started a thread about being tired of wearing skinny jeans tucked into tall boots, seeing it everywhere -- and on everyone. I agreed with her back then, that I was completely sick and tired of this silhouette, as did a few other members. It caused quite a commotion and some upset on the forum.

I had stopped wearing my skinny jeans over a year ago, in favor of bootcuts and straight legs, and booties and shoes, instead of with tall boots having simply OD'd on them. I was so ready to embrace something fresh and new. So I am beyond thrilled to see a different fabrication that's not denim, and a completely different pant silhouette.

I am not tossing my jeans, just delighted to have variety!

Interesting. Janet, I used to be an hourglass verging to Pretty Pear (and always considered myself a pear because I have a small bust -- not taking my shoulders into account, pre YLF). So I always dressed to pear guidelines and found pants horrific to fit. My shape has change to some degree but I still have legs on the short side and muscular thighs and calves. So I do have more angst over dressing the bottom half even now. That is one reason I welcome a looser fit in that area - I don't like the look of myself in the "calf-sucking skinnies" (LOVE that phrase of yours!!! Brilliant!) I do like them tucked into boots and I do like looser skinnies on me, quite lot - but not the super jegging style.

Interesting....I think our first body insecurities have a lot of staying power in some cases.

Hehe, I wasn't here when YLF discussed skinny jeans, but I know it took me a looooong time to get on board with them. I probably only owned a pair as of last year. I think Y
f is opening up my eyes to emerging trends though because I am actually considering these slouchy trousers now, whereas before I probably wouldn't have even known about them for another 3 years, and then I would have dismissed them.

I certainly was around in YLF for all that controversy! I appreciate what you are saying!

For me, getting into skinnies was partly about letting go of their associations with a certain subgroup (what we in Australia call bogans) although figure flattery did bother me too. It wouldn't be a big deal to give them up now, although I do wonder what I used to do on rainy days before I tucked jeans into boots.

I am still at the "no slouchy pants for me" stage.I may eat my words but here are my reasons 1) like Janet I am full in the thighs. Unlike her I am short in the legs as well. I just don't think that trousers are a great look on me full stop, let alone this sort 2) I am committed to a minimalish wardrobe and only plan to buy trousers every 10 years or so. (if I can still fit in them!) I only need one pair for those rare occasions when only trousers will do (Maybe 6-8 times a year). I don't want to invest in a trendy item, even if it is a long term trend.

My Mum has always worn flat front low rise pants. I was embarrassed by this in the 80's but now I realise she just knows what she likes and works for her.

I think it's about how to make a trend work for YOU.

Skinny jeans: I am careful about the length and or scale of the top I am wearing. Either it has to be long or oversized to balance the bottom. Also, I don't wear flats with skinnies -- I need at least a 1.5" bootie. Finally, I don't wear them cropped or ankle style.

BF jeans -- I don't roll them as short as most people do. If I do, I wear taller heels.

Slouchy clothes -- I don't like them super low on my hips, in other words I stick with less of a crotch drop than others. Maybe 3 ".

Reading this, skinny jeans took me the most effort to figure out how to make them work for my build.

A fun read, Ariadne, even for me who haven't been here very long! I am thinking about the slouchy pants trend a lot, and I suppose I'm heading there myself. What concerns me more, is how to maintain a waist, since I'm a pear/hourglass shape, I need some waist definition, I think. Too baggy or too skinny, none of the looks are my best, but a more tailored fit is always good in my opinion - on me, I mean.

Suz, I know I personally am quicker to try trends in tops because I have a lot more angst about dressing my lower half than my upper half. We have a lot of slim hourglasses, rectangles and ITs on this forum, and I feel like you gals have a much easier time of shifting pants styles than I do.

If I had more 'up top' I would wear the chunkier sweaters that everyone had last fall. But now that I am more of a square on clothes pins I am definitely very concious of what tops I wear. Now that I think of it, I have always been more concerned about my tops than my bottoms. The bottoms became an issue when I gained medication weight.

Ooh, good question! New shapes for the lower half seem to be much trickier (mentally, at least) for us to embrace. I'm thinking of how quickly many of us picked up things like high-low shirts and fisherman's sweaters.

Slouchy pants, on the other hand, have been around, at least on the runways, for, what, four or five years? I feel like Angie wrote about them at least 2 years ago, and Anna's had her harem jeans for a while now. And I remember an avant-garde grad school friend wearing a pair before that. I suspect they'll be fringe this year and fairly widespread by next year. Curious to hear everyone else's thoughts.

While I haven't been here quite that long (close enough though), I *do* remember the overall angst about skinny jeans, and you're 100% right that it's similar now with the new boyfriend cuts, and slouchy pants.

I guess that means the slouchy pants will be totally mainstream in about two years from now? As in, way more mainstream than we expect? Just like skinnies were back then? A trend that might go away and didn't ? :)

The funny thing is, having experienced the skinny jeans trend that I really wasn't too keen on - I'm now more inclined to embrace something new, sooner rather than later. As nervous as I am about the new shape, I know better now - I used to think I couldn't wear skinny jeans, and I was wrong. I'm a bit nervous about some of the new slouchy pants, but I feel a bit more open-minded this time around. I'm going to try slouchier pants, without waiting around until they are ubiquitous, and not nearly as fun and interesting as they are now.

Ah, yes, I remember this, too! I was totally against skinnies for a long time - came around to BFs much faster, actually. I had it in my mind that only punk-rockers wore skinny jeans, and I'm so not punk rock... once the classic/equestrian side came out, I was an easier sell. Sometimes, maybe the way a trend is marketed hurts a look?

Wow great post. Younger fashionistas tend to pick up this trends or are willing to try first.. I remember being in college and wanting to buy skinnies because celebrities were wearing them tucked into boots, shocking! So I couldn't find them in stores so I took my extreme flares to the tailor and had them turned into skinnies and everyone I knew raved and complimented me, then I was stuck in the cycle of wanting to be trendy until I realized as long as I am confident in what I wear and the fit is good, there is no being out of style. I will sit out the slouchy pant trend though but I look forward to seeing it on everyone else!

Suz--I'm not sure how long I've been here for--since before my oldest daughter arrived, so probably 4-5 years, with some breaks. What would we do without Angie, eh?

Deb, LOL, I will save a copy of this in my back pocket just in case you do try something slouchy eventually! FWIW, I will be wearing flats or very low heels with all my slouchy items (most of which will be/are tops, not bottoms).

I wanted to add that I don't mean this as a criticism of anyone who's expressed apprehensions the baggy/slouchy/oversized trend. Not at all! I'm mostly just tickled that I've been here long enough to see us cycle from whatever preceded the skinny jean trend (primarily tailored clothes, mostly, I think?) to slouchy. FUN!

This is an interesting observation. I wore skinnies for years until I finally changed to bootcuts but I am glad the skinny phase is back because my legs wear them well. My bottom, not so much, so I now wear long tops. (Although, even when I weighed 100 lbs I wore skinnies and oversized tops). I would love to wear the slouchy look but I can no longer wear heels and I now have a bottom issue. (as well as stomach and waist). I will sit the slouchy phase out and you can repost this if I decide otherwise. lol

That is so cool, Ariadne.

How long have you been a member at YLF?

I wasn't here back in the days when skinnies were just coming in, but I remember being frightened of them. I was over my ideal weight at the time, which was part of it, but I would have been frightened anyway of something so body con. But I did adjust and even embraced the style.

I truly believe the skinnies, BF, slouchies -- ALL these looks can POTENTIALLY work on just about ANY body. They can also look dreadful (and often do, in cheaper versions, poorly styled). Which is why we have Angie and YLF -- to help us interpret them in ways that work for us, personally, and that feel great!

I used to be scared of changes in the fashion weather. But I'm starting to find the changes.....gasp....FUN!!!!

It does mean some financial outlay. But no more so than most hobbies and less so than many!

I think this is the nature of fashion. People definitely adjust to what they see regularly. I got very lukewarm reception on BF jeans last year so I totally know where you are coming from. It's nice there are more opportunities for everyone to find something they like, works for them and is within their budget.

...when skinny jeans were trending and just hitting the mainstream, and almost ALL of us on the forum, including Angie, were thoroughly unimpressed? We had so many forum threads about skinny jeans! "They are unflattering, why are they in style, they only work on tall skinny people, the rest of us look like ice cream cones!" Those threads morphed into "How do I wear them, do they work with this or that item," and so on. Now skinnies are so mainstream that no one bats an eye. Almost all of us who've been around YLF since that time have found that our eyes adjusted, and we went on to at least try skinnies. We dipped our toes in with flop-proof combos of tall boots and tunics or dresses. Some decided it wasn't for them, some stayed happily in the flop-proof comfort zone, some became slowly more adventurous and experimental, and a few took a pass on the trend altogether (I assume--I can't think of who, but I bet Angie could!), sticking with dresses, trousers, or other denim styles. No approach was superior; all were fab!

My point is that all the threads we've been having recently about baggy, slouchy, and oversized clothes remind me of that particular YLF phase so much! I don't mean to imply that everyone who's side-eyeing the slouchy trend will eventually jump on board 100%. But I'd bet money that in 2 or 3 years' time, almost everyone will have adjusted to some extent, and most of us will have given the trend a bash in some way, shape or form.

I'm excited to see it all play out.

It's also fun to realize I've been on YLF long enough to see an entire, I don't know, style cycle? Sea change?

(I'm jumping on board much earlier, this time, and I think it's entirely because of YLF--I have a little more confidence in myself, a better understanding of how fashion and its trendy whims play out, a greater willingness to experiment and have fun, and less guilt about embracing fashion as something of a hobby.)
