I have the Rowenta and have had two others - both work but the Rowenta is my favorite so I gave the other two away. I find it is best for knitwear and can bomb through a huge pile of clothing in much less time that with an iron and without those side creases and change to the color you can get with an iron. It is also great for refreshing items between dry cleaning that are hard to do with an iron.

After mine broke I didn't bother replacing it but if I wore delicate fabrics more often, or woven wool, I would, because those fabrics don't always iron easily. My daughters have them and love them, so I've decided they're especially popular with people who refused to pay attention when their mothers were teaching to iron.

Another steamer fan! Mine is permanently set up. It's incredible for silks and rayons. I also find that it refreshes pile fabric winter coats beautifully. My life involves wearing silk chiffon evening gowns reasonably often and literally nothing else makes the gowns so perfect.

Thank you all so much for your replies! See, those amazon reviews can't replace the YLFabbers, imho .

I'm glad for all the added info about what you have or know what they can be used for (who knew about bedbugs??) and your experience with different types of fabrics, from linen to leather.

Glad some of you mentioned the ones you use by name and links. That handheld Shark one may do everything the bigger model I was looking at can do and would be much more storable for me.

Grateful....have a nice weekend, ladies!

The last time this came up on the forum, I went out and snagged one from Costco. I was so excited, used it once, and haven't used it again since! I am an iron addict and seem to be able to do all that I need to do with the iron. Maybe I should just keep the steamer set up and I'd use it more.....

Oops! I just googled Jiffy steamer and they're more than $150....it's been a while since I priced one! But another use for them is steaming curtains, drapes and slipcovers. I've borrowed one from work for this and it works beautifully.

I only have a travel one and seldom use it. But at work, we have a Jiffy (brand) steamer, and it is great. You don't need to be a retailer to buy one, I've thought of getting one myself. They're about $150, more or less. Rowena steamers and irons with a steamer feature look to be really good.

I have a small travel sized one I impulsively purchased at bed bath and beyond shopping for college stuff for dd; don't know how I lived without it! Easy and fast makes quick work of wrinkles. Still have to iron (soooo rarely) certain blouses that need to be crisp, and to crease trousers.

I have a larger handheld Shark for home use and a smaller travel steamer that I always take with me on trips. I want to buy a larger Rowenta once I get the extra bedroom cleaned out so that I can keep it out and easily accessible. I am the world's worst ironer, so a steamer is vital in my life.

I'm on my third large steamer and love them for the ease of use! It's set up ALL THE TIME. I steam out clothing, have steamed off wallpaper, and used it to disinfect surfaces and loosen oven grime. Mine are all from Tuesday Morning at a big discount but I would pounce on one for full price knowing how much use it will get!

I have had 3 , love them, they freshen garments, they ease wrinkles out, I rarely iron. They do wear out after a couple of years or so. I have to admit I don't really look after mine. You are supposed to empty them after each use, and unplug, I have left mine running and gone to work. I rarely dump the water, just add. They work amazing. I had that one as seen on tv, it lasted maybe 2 or 3 years, then I bought a shark , I don't think the shark lasted a year. Now I have a small rowenta. Its a travel one. I have had it a year ish. I do plan on getting a big one again.
Also, as a side note, not that any of you need this information, They kill bed bugs! (I was in an industry where we had to care for the elderly and this issue comes up)

I have one (some generic brand--can't remember). I find using it to be as effective as ironing, except on the very worst wrinkles. And there's no risk of damaging the fabric with it like there is with ironing.

I realize many people have the skills to iron tough wrinkles out of their clothes without leaving heat marks. I, sadly, am not one of those people.

I have a Rowenta and I wouldn't be without it. Great investment!
It's great for refreshing things like blazers, dress pants and skirts. I steam sweaters that have become creased or wrinkled from sitting folded. It's great for smoothing out anything linen. I could go on and on. I wouldn't be without an iron...it has it place.....but I use my steamer more than my iron.

I do not agree that it's "best for delicate fabrics". I've used it on all types of fabric. It even removed creases from a leather dress (steamed from the inside).

I do, but I hardly ever use it. As you suggested, it's best for delicate fabrics, but wrinkles will often hang out of those fabrics if you simply hang the garment in the bathroom while you shower. Foserious creases, you really need an iron. I think retail steamers must have a lot more oomph than my little one does, too. For serious creases, I need an iron.

I'm looking at buying this one: http://www.amazon.com/Steamfas.....;qid=14323...

With buying online, clothes can come out of the package in a wrinkled state because the step where the retailer would steam them has been omitted. Sometimes I'm concerned about ironing with some delicate or treated fabrics.

Do you own one? Is it worth it? I know there are tons of reviews there on amazon, but thought I'd ask here too.

And if you do own one, do you use it for anything other than clothes?
