Thanks Karen I go through phases of using different products - usually whatever my stylist recommends. What I'm using right now:

Milkshake Lilac toning mousse (conditioning only); Living Proof styling cream , then finishing with R& Co hair powder paste (fantastic product - so weird yet effective) and a shot or hairspray.

Thanks everyone - I need some sharper fingernail scissors and some courage. It is only hair. My stylist ahs offered to trim the back, but I'm not really growing it out, and just not always able to drive 40 mile each way on a day she is in the shop when I reach the annoyance point.

lisa p - your hair always looks so good - and definitely not in and and fine. Any other tips, tools or products for making it so?

Sorry Karen, I did see this but have been travelling the past couple of days with only a phone for typing - so left it til today to comment. I am a constant trimmer and cutter ; the joke with my stylist is that I'm not allowed near the good tools lest I do some major damage to my own hair . My hair grows pretty quickly, and I am VERY particular about it getting too bushy or scraggly around my ears and at the back of the neck. My stylist trims both for free any time I want - but I usually go at the side pieces myself with super-sharp cuticle scissors . Your hair sounds like mine. Tip : you cut up and into your hair, not across the bottom in a straight line.

I don't do above the ears but I do sometimes snip at my own bangs or do a bit of thinning. (My hair is super thick.)

My stylist will also "clean up" the neck or above the ears for free, mid-point. Worth asking. I only take advantage of this about once a year but it's a nice service.

Karen, as you know, my hair is very short. I don’t cut my hair except rarely when I think one side seems longer than the other. But I had to mention that I suffered from my mother’s attempts to cut my bangs when I was little. They were always at an angle in my school pictures. That’s probably why I don’t want to cut my own hair.

Your stylist might do this for you, if you mention it at your next cut. I'm trying to grow my hair longer into a new style, but get annoyed by 'neck stuff' (I have a long hairline). The stylist said that trimming bangs and/or neck hair is part of the service - and free. I now get my neck cleaned at the midpoint between cuts.

I do it. Not sure I have any tips except take off a tiny bit at a time. Maybe clip into the shape a little and don’t cut off a straight line, if that makes sense. I also sometimes clip 1/4”-1/2” into the ends of my hair at the crown about half way to my next hair cut. That seems to help keep some lift on top.

Does anyone trim their own pixie cut above the ears? I think I remember lisa p mentioning a few years ago that she does this (but it was before her lost profile info). I am finding the area above my ears looks unkempt much faster than the 4+ weeks it takes the rest of the cut to get too shaggy for me.

Anyone have success and tips? I have very fine, thin, pretty straight hair.
