Ditto everything Jaime just wrote (but substitute chocolate for popcorn, which my "friend" absolutely loves)! I love seeing your process and the results are TDF. Your use of color is really fab--when I used to dye stuff a lot, I found it hard to get just the right tone I wanted, but your colors look beautiful, and work so well with your gorgeous array of print skirts!

Living all of these. In the 90s I used to do a lot of tie dying with bleach. I even free-hand painted some black converse sneakers with bleach, and the results were awesome. You might try that if you have some tees where you like the base color but want to add pattern.

The other thing I should mention, for anyone thinking of trying this, is that you should treat any home dyed item as non-colour fast for the first few washes after you dye it. So wash it with similar colours, or darks. I have tried using dye fixative but haven’t noticed much difference. Better safe than sorry.

Mary Beth, I dye the tees in the machine for about an hour on 40C using RIT liquid dye. I’m not game to try 60C because I think it might shrink the tees. I start the cycle, then pause it immediately, open the door when the safety catch allows it, add dye, salt and a drop of detergent. Close the door, restart the cycle. (I don’t add dye through the washing powder dispenser because I think it would stain it.) I have tried using a bucket instead but the results tend to be less saturated. Plus I have a teeny tiny (all white) laundry so it makes me anxious to have buckets of dye sitting around.

The big issue with using a machine is that dye residue can remain in the machine. I always wipe it out afterwards, especially the door. Then run a load of darks. Even so I have occasionally had some dye persist over a few washes. Our sheets recently took on a pinkish hue, which is probably my bad. So care is required! I wouldn’t use the machine if I wore a lot of white (fortunately I don’t).

Thanks all!

Part 3 is underway and I am trying 2 new patterns. Sneak preview below :)

The copper-green version is my favourite in this batch too, which is amazing considering I did not like it when I first unwrapped it. I am learning a lot through this exercise about colour theory, or how one colour affects another. The green of the tee toned down the red in the oxblood dye mix (because they are complimentary colours), so the tee looks much browner than version 1.

I started off using old tees in this endeavour but as of this weekend I’ve run out of old white tees, so I’ve had to buy some more. I have a few more patterns and colours I want to try before I call it quits for the summer.

Xtabay, I am deliberately trying to match the colours to my skirts so it is, as you say, a great way to de-orphan a skirt. I think of tie dye patterns as fairly neutral, like stripes, so they work well for mix and matching.

Joy, yes, I do use rubber bands to create the stripes. Folds also have a role in creating the diagonal effect.

Brooklyn, these are genius! I love how you are making your formula work so well with these DIY projects. You've truly inspired me for a summer look -- I don't know if I will be able to find the skirts I want and I'm pretty certain I wouldn't be able to dye tees as well as you do, but I'm strongly considering this formula. I especially love the diagonal stripes and the pattern/ colour in #9. It's fun seeing them in their different combinations with the skirts, too. Thank you!
