Thanks, I did tie with string and scrunch but with the extra layers of a tee, I’m only getting the design on the parts on the top of the wrap, so I need to do more research on this! Love your results.

Lana, that looks pretty good! I used a fan fold and tied with elastic bands. I can’t use a pole wrap because I dye in the machine. No poles in the machine! I did try a work around involving lots of scrunching of the fabric. I think I posted about that in Part 2, but it didn’t come out that great.

When you wrap around the pole are you scrunching the fabric down at the same time? They make it look easy on YouTube, but it did seem a bit tricky to me.

Brooklyn, I’ve been playing with this today, using the Arashi technique but am not coming up with a consistent result. I’m getting some lines on the outer edges of my shirt but not the middle. Which technique did you use, fan fold or pole wrap?

Wow, these are gorgeous! I love shibori and tie dye, and these look beautifully done and work so well with your style! I see what you mean about the first one (that would make me twitchy too, even though I would tell myself it was fine...), but maybe you could semi-tuck that side and no one would be the wiser, especially since the horizontal line is level at the bust where the pattern starts. Love the diagonal ones too. You are very talented and have such a good eye.

Brooklyn, you are amazing. Your DIY fail would be my very proud achievement! I love how you take inspiration from designer looks and make it a practical reality.

I just checked out the Proenza Schouler website and $700 for a tie-dyed t-shirt is just way out of reach for most people. Slight imperfections show yours are hand done and make them more valuable.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate all your comments. On the DIY and the outfits :)

With the first top. The lines are straight and parallel to each other, but not to the hem of the top. So they go on an upwards angle. Enough to be noticeable but not enough to look intentional. I was after horizontal or something close to that! I will still wear the top. I consider it a proud fail :)

Angie, I was happy with colour match. It’s more that, in person, the black and bronze top looks less distinctive and colour saturated than the blue-green version. I think the iPhone probably makes it look better because it enhances contrast. But, as you can see, that didn’t stop me from wearing it! All part of the learning experience.

NancyW, that’s the ultimate compliment. I felt very happy with the blue-green version. I thought: if I saw that in a shop I would pay money for it. So naturally I had to try again!

Xtabay, do you remember the thrill you got when you took off the ties at the end of the dyeing process? I reckon that’s the best part of tie dyeing. The big reveal. Coming up with something wearable is a bonus.

Joy, I’ve found cotton and linen easiest to dye. Technically you can do viscose and viscose blends too but I don’t seem to be able to get as saturated a result. I have thought about doing scarves too. Watch this space.

JAileen, that sounds awesome! On the RIT website they talk about doing reverse tie dye too. You use dye remover to create a pattern. I think that’s the best way to do a pattern involving black. It’s hard to get a saturated black.

Zaeobi, very true. Perfection is the enemy of good :)

Rachy, I love the ugly theory!

Jenn, have you seen the price of Proenza t-shirts???

I just bought a pair of shibori print PJ's. I've always loved the look of shibori, and it seems to be getting more popular. Your shirts are fantastic and I look forward to seeing Round 2! My particular favorite is pic #4, but I'd gladly wear any of them.

My sisters and I used to tie-dye everything back in the day, and I definitely learned that dyeing is an inexact science. You have to be prepared for unexpected results. Thankfully, there are often happy accidents! Thanks again for sharing this, it's inspiring.

Things look like they match well enough in the pics, although I get how you want them to be a dead right match. Lucky that your favourite colour was the most successful of the lot!

Whilst I can see the progression throughout the photos, I think they all look great - in fact, the 'fine' lines version goes wonderfully with the delicate floral pattern on that skirt!

The hardest part of art is knowing when to depart (stop). It can be *so* tempting to keep going over something until it's perfect (heaven knows I'm guilty of this with my pencils & paints, lol), but sometimes we need to take a step back & evaluate.

Try your creations on a few more times then see if the 'imperfections' bother you so much anymore - after all, an outfit is usually about how the pieces come together as a *whole*
