Thanks Rae, I appreciate your input. All your points are all well taken and it sounds a lot more effort (and mess) than I'm willing to endeavor. My washing machine never quite gets hot. I might try one more shot at getting the stain out and then hunt down the sales.

Jeanne, I have never tried a lot of the dyes out there, if only because I've been happy with the easier ones to use so far. I've used Jacquard iDye for natural fibers. If you wanted to try that, they have versions for natural fibers as well as for polyester. Since Rayon is made from naturally occurring polymers, the regular iDye might work.

My main concerns would be:
1) a tub large enough to heat the dye solution... iDye packets can go into the washing machine if you have a nice hot setting and don't mind cleaning the machine after.

2) I think both cotton and rayon shrink a bit in hot water? Dye sets better in heat, but I don't know if you'd end up with wrinkly zippers after... if it is not a dark stain, you don't need a super dark color, so maybe just use the warmest water safe for the fabric.

3) washing/rinsing the coat after the dye process. I don't own much down, but it seems like a lot of the pigment might cling to the feathers? It could be a PITA to really rinse until the water runs clear. Again, a washing machine at home might help in this if you are able to keep resetting the rinse/spin cycle instead of using the bathtub like I do.

Honestly, shoes are easier! You just sponge it on.

HELP
DH's favorite down-filled winter coat has an unsightly stain on it. The shell is light tan, 70/30 Cotton/rayon. Before we fork out big bucks for a new one can this be saved by dyeing? I've never dyed before so an idiot's guide to what's needed would be helpful. The lining is brown (and so is the stain) so I'm thinking some shade of brown. Not too dark since there are a few light colored snaps on the pockets and I don't think they'll dye. I searched and it looks like Procion would be a good choice? But how much do I need and what other things (ash? fixative?)
Thanks in advance!
If I can master this I might advance to shoes next...
