Oh Goody!! Rae is at it, again!!

Ponyhair is not really from ponies. It's from cattle. It is made the same way the leather for a sheep shearling coat is. The hair is not removed from the hide as part of the tanning process, and it is then sheared to make ponyhair leather.

The industry name for this product is "hair on hide". It can be dyed just about any colour, but during the manufacturing process it is first bleached to remove the natural colour, then dyes are added to create the colour or pattern desired. Kind of sounds like a trip to the salon, doesn't it. Well, it is, except they don't scalp you to colour your hair.

Any of you who have coloured your own or someone elses hair will know that the finished colour is dependant on original colour, texture, etc.. Hair on hide is no different. You will just have to experiment on the particular piece of leather you have.

Tarrago makes variety of metallic colours and you may have to mix a special batch for your needs.

Well, good luck. Hope I haven't scared the crap out of you and cause you to abandon this project. Remember, "In for a penny, in for a pound."

Go get 'em, Rae!!

Cheers

Julie

Thistle, I have not seen the Fryes in person, but I agree that the color has more shine. My color seems to be more of a sheer shimmer and doesn't build that well. I'm going to keep that "more reflection" idea in mind when looking for another product to layer.

The good thing is that I think my camera washed the color out a bit; the colors are pretty contrasting as I look at them here.

Cool! I like the bronze color but I do think it would be better if it was shinier. No idea how to achieve that though.

Love the inspiration! I can only see the pics. Have you seen the inspiration in real, life? The picture looks shinier, like the metallic in it has more reflection. Not sure how to put. The color also looks brighter so there is more contrast.

Sch a cool project. You are a braver DIYer!

I think they look good! I do think the Fryes used something with more metallic pigment s it looks a little shinier but I think you can create the same look.

Deb, you may be right. Or at least a more shiny vs. shimmery finish. I will see if I can get a different product to try.

I like the idea of keeping on with bronze and highlighting later. I think the stepped-in-mud effect is hightened by the spot you chose to start working. Can't wait to see them finished!

EDIT: This went much faster than expected! I went ahead and continued with the bronze, and here is the finished product. I think it actually does look a good deal like the inspiration, but what do you think? Does it need extra shine?
*********

I received my black calfhair booties today and was really stoked to launch my bronze bootie DIY project... but now I can't tell if my bronze color is too coppery/brownish. Does it look like a good match, or do you think it looks like I just stepped in mud?

I suppose I could keep going and highlight in a more golden tone if I didn't like the finished product?
