Hmm... maybe I should try this with my funky trench that I drew all over. It might make it look a little more designer-y!

Sylvie, that would have been a flattering and stylish basic trench to have trimmed up like this. This DIY project is at least something to keep in mind if you find the right fit, style, quality and sale priced trench that you might have otherwise passed on as being too bland or basic. I'm going to keep my eyes open with this in mind when I hit the sales racks or discount stores in the future.

That's brilliant!

Now I'm really sad that I didn't buy this trench when it was available on deep sale in my size. I thought the beige was too boring but I would have loved it with a black (or dare I say deep purple or navy or red) contrast edging.

Mochi, I don't actually think it requires a huge amount of skill per se, just a lot of patience and good lighting/eyesight to make sure your stitches are neat. The nice thing about bias tape is that it comes pre-pressed and cut and everything, you literally just have to tack it down. In this case, the stiches have to be neat since one side of them shows.

I noticed this on her blog also and thought it was great. About buttons, they can get really expensive. Whenever I want to change them on an item, I just go to the thrift store and look for an item in the color I want, purchase that and cut the buttons off and sew them on the new item. It does take a bit of time, but worth it for me. Also, sometimes you can find unique or vintage buttons that way. I wish I had the time to invest in this trench project!

Really there wouldn't too much skill involved, just lots of patience.
I'd love to try this! I'd like to do one like the Milly one. Now to find a not-too-expensive navy trench!

Jessica writes on her blog that it took approximately 8-9 hours over two weeks time for her project. You'd have to have some patience for sure, but if a Kate Spade coat at $700 is out of reach, the time equals some serious money savings to get the look.

That is very cool! Although that is a whole lotta bias tape sewing. Not sure I would have the patience for that much hand sewing (says the person who routinely spends the same amount of time hand knitting... but sewing is a whole different beast.)

Yes, time consuming because you'd need to do it by hand but for those who sew and find it relaxing it would be a worthwhile project. I started to picture all sorts of colored trenches with different trims.
