Shiny and Angie, thanks so much for your feedback.
I agree it is both, and in a way it is a nice change to *not* want to buy everything I see! And guess what? Before YLF (~ 1 yr ago I became a regular follower) I would NEVER have worn a belt but I just bought two, including the one shown below and they work really, really well to give help me achieve a peplum-type look and I like it a lot! I'll try to post some pics soon. Oh ya, I mostly shop at Nordstroms and Anthropologie, and I do order things from MyShape sometimes.

Their smallest size cardi in petites runs too big on me too Shiny, and we wear a similar size. Boyfriends are supposed to be voluminous - not fitted. I was thinking about the plain petites V-neck cardi that was on sale which I can’t find to show you on their sale :0(

Angie, I just looked at Talbot's and they only have one V-neck cardi, it is cashmere cable knit, and quite expensive. I wear through my cardi's too fast, so I don't know if I would drop that much on one. Hmm. Also not sure about the cable knit. And in the past, the smallest petite size at Talbot's ran too big for me... but if I'm near a Talbot's, I'll give it a shot. Thanks!

Shiny, try Talbots petites for cardigans.

Rosemerin, will you belt a cardigan? And where do shop?

I think there's an overabundance of certain styles this season, and you either love them or you hate them. I suspect it has to do a lot with the economy. I remember this time last year, BR, AT, ATL, and Jcrew would offer "new arrivals" every single week! And now I notice they are updating new arrivals only about once a month.

So there is definitely not as much variety. And that means that they are going to stick with what entices people to buy. Something totally new that you don't already own in your wardrobe - a trendy item - is what many of these places are offering now: skinny jeans, voluminous tops, sack dresses, puffy sleeves. Which you either love, or you loathe. (I have gone from loathe to "like for a change- if I can get it just right and make it work for me, not against me.")

With that said, there's still an emphasis on basics, because people will always buy basics. You just have to train your eye and you'll see the basics mixed in with all the trendy pieces. AT for example I'd say is about half and half right now.

I also think you are probably becoming a more discriminating shopper!! There is a lack of structure and waist-defining clothes right now. I cannot find a decent replacement cardigan anywhere (not even talking cropped cardi - just a V-neck that is form-fitting and not full of volume, too long, too ruffly). Grrrr. These are my wardrobe workhorses. Even if I'm figuring out how to adapt to the trendier pieces, I need these pieces too! So I feel your frustration.

Hi Fellow YLFers,
Angie's post on ruffles today reminded me that I have been meaning to get feedback on my take on the trends this fall. I for one am totally disappointed in what is out there this fall, for sweaters, jackets + tops. Where are the peplum tops that were supposed to be plentiful this fall, for example? It seems like there is a lack of fitted tops..? Most tops out there seem to want to add volume in some way, through ruffles, puffy sleeves, and/or voluminous sleeves, voluminous cardis, etc.. Or, there is lack of structure (e.g. boyfriend cardis..?)
OR.. am I getting to be a better shopper, and getting more discriminating with respect to what works on me??
