Despite wearing a perfectly-fitted bra (I routinely get my bra fitted yearly), I still have back fat. In fact, I notice it more! It's not one of my fussiest bits (still pretty fussy though), but I've worked out solutions for it.

My advice?

1) Well-tailored garments (blazers, shirts, dresses tailored to your measurements)
2) Flowy, looser tops (a-line or blouson)
3) Layering (i.e. Cardigan over shirt, v-neck sweater over button-down shirt)
4) Don't wear tight knit tops (or stretchy wovens)

I've never tried Sassybax before but I heard wonderful things about them. I never tried because I'm a DD/E, and I really can't go without a bra. I think certain shapewear can alleviate the problem as well, but I've always had better luck with the advice I mentioned above.

I've found that since menopause, my upper arms, which always were on the fleshy side, and my upper back, have become major fat-storage sites and it ages me a lot. I swear I did NOT used to see this problem, and now it is a real bummer. I'm doing exercise every day, and eating a lot more carefully, because exercise by itself hasn't helped. In fact, I used to love bra shopping, or getting new bras, and now I really hate it. (I suppose all of those padded-and-armorlike bras don't improve things, but it's the back view that really irks me) I DO think it is partly finding a good fit in the band, and a wider band, but, I notice and hate it that I have back flab around my under-arm area. Ugh! If I'm able to conquer this with diet and exercise, you can be sure I will HOLLER!

The brands I've heard of have alreay been mentioned, but I thought I'd commiserate and say that my bands create bulge, too. They really should make 'em wider, for everyone!

I've just tried the Soma bras Teri posted and love them. Good coverage up front (and for 34DDD that's something) comfortable (has 4 hooks) and miniscule (not zero) back fat.

I have backfat no matter how un-fleshy the rest of me is. I think it's just the way some bodies are. I'm slowly teetering into the woven world for this very reason. I hate wovens, I really do, but I have more lumps than I used to, and I think wovens hide those better. It's good to know that I'm not alone. I wear a lot of jackets and no matter how hot I get, I avoid taking them off because I know what lies beneath.

Sure would be nice if they would make these wider bands for the 30 and 28 sizes. Seems the smaller around your ribcage, the skinnier the band gets, until it's like a rubber band dissecting you in two! Argh. I am not a particularly fleshy gal but the back fat phenomenon drives me cuckoo.

I've started wearing stretchy camisoles with just about everything in part to combat these kinds of problems. They aren't tight enough to be shapewear, just a bit smoothing. I actually find that I sweat less wearing a camisole, perhaps because my skin is better protected?

ETA: Oops, I didn't realize this was an old thread that seems to have been revived by spam... ah well, at least we still have something to say on the topic!

I agree with Kari - my bras that have 3 hooks on the back have more width and better cover the back fat without making it bulge above or below the band.

I bought one of the no-wire sassybax bras and they do a good job of creating a smooth line across the back since they are made of a heavy-weight stretchy fabric and the shape along the bank is more of a tank style rather than a thin band. However, they also flattened & did not support my breasts so while my back looked better, my front did not! It's basically a glorified sports bra imho. I'm not sure if the underwired one would be all that much better for anyone with a larger chest who needs the support & shaping of a seamed bra. I also don't think the spanx bra will be any better in that regard.

It helps me if I have a wider band - 3 or even 4 hooks rather than 2 - because not only is the bust support better, but I also don't have as thin of a band compressing my back. I took a tight tee shirt into the fitting room last time I went bra shopping at Nordstrom and experimented with different bras - all of them fit correctly, but the width of the band made a huge difference.

It's actually a loose band that causes back fat. It rides up and pushes the flesh up. A well fitting bra anchors far down on the ribcage and lies snugly without cutting in to the flesh (cutting in being different than simply leaving marks...even the waistband on my pants leaves marks). However, If you have a fleshy back even without a bra (sorry, not using the best language), the right bra won't eliminate it.

B-Mom, trust me, it's not you. I get those bulges too, even in the area where all I can feel are ribs. It's just the nature of a properly snug bra band to press tightly against you and create bulges. In colder weather you can smooth things out (on top of the bra) with a shaper cami; even a regular cami will help a tiny bit.

Hmmm, I discovered my own back fat when I started wearing the proper bra band size. . .and it was not an easy tradeoff to get used to.

I've heard good things about sassybax, but haven't tried it.

My lame fix is to not wear tight knits that hug every back bulge. Woven tops are kinder and, come fall I usually wear a top layer of jacket, cardi, etc. and it's all hidden

I prefer to think that it's not that women have problems with how we are built, but more that bras are not designed properly :)! One store, Sassybax, has designed bras that eliminate the bulging near the band that normal bras create. I have one bra from them, and I like it for the most part (it certainly creates smoothness in the back area), though it doesn't offer quite the same support as a typical bra.

Here's the link:

My back fat is always there, regardless of a perfect fitting bra. When you're as big as me you can't really disguise it but voluminous tops help hide it.

Is it possible? I always have it no matter what style bra I try (some are better than others) and if I go up in band size it's too loose and 'the girls' droop....
